v2 12/08 P+P ANTHRON SELF RESCUE SYSTEM USER INSTRUCTIONS P+P Product Code 90015/20 This manual does not constitute suitable and sufficient training in the use of this rescue equipment. Contact P+P for details of all our certificated training courses. PAMMENTER & PETRIE LIMITED 140-146 Brearley Street. Hockley, Birmingham B19 3XJ Tel: +44 (0) 121 359 4561 (Sales) Tel: +44 (0) 121 503 5860 (Training) Fax: +44 (0) 121 359 4136 Website: www.pammenter.co.uk E-mail: info@pammenter.co.uk

Product Overview The P+P Anthron Self Rescue System is a pre-rigged single person self rescue kit that is both simple and quick to use. The P+P Anthron Self Rescue System is used to perform a self rescue by abseiling / descending to a point of safety. The standard unit (P+P product code 90307/20) comes complete with 20 metres of 11mm low stretch kernmantle rope and an Anthron DSD25 Descender, to which is attached a P+P karabiner for connection to the user. At the end of the rope is a steel screwgate karabiner for easy attachment to the anchorage point. The rescue equipment is contained in an easily transported rescue bag. Additional lengths of rope are available upon request. Parts Identification P+P Captive Screwgate Karabiner Anthron DSD25 Descender Rope P+P Screwgate Karabiner

Self Rescue Procedure In order to carry out a Self Rescue the operator (abseiler) requires a harness with a front attachment point (D-ring or loop) or the P+P Rescue Nappie. Single rope abseiling does not offer a secondary fall arrest back-up and must only be used as a last resort. Specific training in this technique is mandatory. Instructions for use 1. In a position of safety, ideally using suitable fall protection equipment at all times, the abseiler lifts the rescue unit from the rescue bag. 2. The screwgate karabiner on the end of the rope should be connected to a suitable anchorage point. 3. The rescue bag can now be dropped from the structure or secured onto the abseiler s harness. (Please see note B). 4. Attach the P+P karabiner on the Anthron Descender. The front attachment point (D-ring or loop) on the abseiler s harness or rescue nappie, ensuring that the gate is fully closed and secure. 5. Double check that all connections are secure. 6. Keeping his/her fall protection equipment in place (if in place) and without touching the handle on the Anthron Descender the abseiler brings their weight down onto the rescue unit. 7. Once the abseiler s weight has been transferred to the rescue equipment the fall protection equipment can be detached from the structure. 8. The abseiler can now lower himself/herself to a point of safety by squeezing the handle on the Anthron Descender to allow the rope to pass through the unit. (Please see note C). Always control the rate of descent by feeding the free rope going into the Anthron Descender with the other hand. 9. Ensure that a uniform rate of descent is maintained and that the abseiler does not hit the position of safety too fast. Note B Dropping the rescue bag from the structure ensures that there is enough rope in the kit to perform the required descent distance. However, the abseiler must ensure that there are no obstructions or other hazards below the abseil point. The rope is packaged in such a way that it will deploy if positioned on the abseiler s harness, but care must be taken to ensure that the length of rope is known (this is printed on the rope label). Note C The Anthron DSD25 Descender is a Double Braked Unit. With the handle released the rope will not pass through, to allow the rope to pass the handle must be squeezed by hand to reduce the amount of friction. If the handle is squeezed too much the friction is re-applied and the rope will once again not pass through. Therefore, the abseiler must be in control of his/her actions at all times as the Anthron Descender has a fail-safe antipanic design.

Inspection Requirements Keep these instructions or a copy with the P+P Anthron Self Rescue System for future reference to assist with inspections and safety checks. The equipment is subjected to a thorough visual and tactile inspection after manufacture and before packaging. It is then sealed into the rescue bag. Upon delivery to site ensure that the seal is intact. This initial inspection must be recorded. Pammenter and Petrie Limited (P+P) recommends that at the start of every working day the equipment is checked to ensure that the seal is still intact and that the rescue bag is not damaged or contaminated. P+P also recommends that a recorded inspection of the seal and integrity of the rescue bag is carried out at least every 6 months (3 monthly in hazardous environments). This recorded inspection should be carried out by a competent person. After use the equipment should be removed from service until it has been subjected to a thorough visual and tactile inspection by a competent person. This interim inspection must also be recorded. P+P can perform this after use inspection and replace any worn or damaged parts as required. The kit will then be re-sealed as when new. Whilst in use particular attention should be paid to the following: Metal components inspect for signs of damage, distortion or corrosion, ensure correct operation and locking of all connectors, Rescue rope inspect for signs of wear or abrasion, ensure that the rope does not run over sharp or abrasive edges or protrusions whilst under tension, inspect for signs of unravelling or extension, check for any reduction in the diameter of the rope All Personal Fall Protection and Rescue Equipment should be immediately removed from service after being subjected to a shock load, or if there is any doubt about it s condition or integrity.

Care Requirements The P+P Anthron Self Rescue System can be cleaned if required. The following cleaning method must be adhered to. Use hand hot water and mild detergent only, Use a cloth or sponge to wipe the equipment, do not soak, saturate or over wet the kit, Repeat the above with fresh, clean water to rinse, Allow to dry naturally before re-packing, do not force dry with direct (e.g. central heating radiator) or in-direct (e.g. hot air blower) heat sources, After cleaning the equipment should be removed from service until it has been subjected to a thorough visual and tactile inspection by a competent person. This interim inspection must be recorded. All safety and rescue equipment should be stored and transported in the following way: In a cool and dry environment, With no direct heat or sunlight, Under no strain or pressure, Not subjected to undue dust or contaminates, Away from harmful chemicals or substances, Dry, In an appropriate bag, box or cabinet. Obsolescence All products manufactured by Pammenter and Petrie Limited (P+P) are subject to a statement of obsolescence. This is the manufacturer s recommendation as to the safe working life of the product and is required by BS EN 365:2004, the European Standard Personal Protection Equipment against falls from height general requirements for instructions for use, maintenance, periodic inspection, repair, marking and packaging. The P+P Anthron Self Rescue System has a maximum working life of 5 years from the date of initial inspection when delivered to site. The equipment may be stored (see Care Requirements ) prior to delivery to site for a maximum of 2 years from date of manufacture to still give the potential 5 year working life. Without noting the date if initial inspection, the 5 year working life begins with the date of manufacture. To achieve maximum life the product must have been subjected to regular recorded inspections as detailed above in Inspection Requirements.

We offer a full range of training courses in all aspects of height safety and rescue.
