The contest marks the first meeting between the two schools since 2005 when the Vols claimed a 69-58 win on their home court. The series dates back to 1954 with Tennessee holding a 2-0 lead all-time. The game is slated to air on SEC Network +. Darren Headrick, Steve Hamer and Maddy Glab will have the call of the game. Lipscomb heads to Tennessee Tech on Saturday before a trip to Austin Peay next Tuesday and concluding 2016 at Missouri on Dec. 29. Garrison Mathews picked up ASUN Conference Player of the Week honors for his play last week. The sophomore guard averaged 30.5 points per game and six rebounds per outing. The Franklin, Tennessee native scored a career high 36 points against Morehead State on Saturday, just two points shy of the Lipscomb NCAA era record. He hit 8-of-10 from beyond the arc to come up just one triple shy of tying that school mark as well. He opened the week with a 25-point effort against rival Belmont. Sophomore center Rob Marberry notched a NCAA era record for the Bisons at Belmont by going a perfect 11-for-11 from the field. The feat broke the previous mark of 8-for-8 by Michael Teller in 2008 against USC Upstate and is the best by any player against Belmont in the NCAA era. His streak eventually reached 15 straight buckets before he missed his second shot against TSU. Marberry was honored for his efforts by the ASUN being named the league s Newcomer of the Week for his play a week ago. He averaged 16.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg and 1.7 bpg and shot 71.2 percent from the field. Notching 104 points against Tennessee Tech, the Bisons set a school mark for points against an NCAA Division I opponent in regulation and tied the mark for most points against an NCAA Division I opponent overall. The previous time was in 2012 in an overtime win against Stetson. After setting the school record for 3-pointers made in 2015-16 (331), the Bisons aerial attack is in full swing again this season. With 12 games in the books, Lipscomb ranks 7th in the NCAA with 112 treys made so far. Lipscomb is also ranked among the nation s best in free throw attempts (1st, 330), free throws made (4th, 233), 3-point field goals attempted (5th, 323), total assists (9th, 199) and total rebounds (20th, 440). The Bisons were tabbed to finish fourth in ASUN league standings by a vote of the league coaches. That was two slots higher than the media, who predicted a sixth-place finish for Lipscomb. Both groups forecasted a first-place finish for reigning tournament champion FGCU. The league skippers voted senior guard Josh Williams onto the preseason All-ASUN team. Williams returns for his final campaign after becoming the fastest player in the NCAA era to reach the 1,000 point mark last season. Williams became the 45th member of the exclusive club before a knee-injury sidelined him before the Christmas break. Williams returned to the Lipscomb lineup against Sewanee scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds. Williams sits 27th all-time in scoring with 1,266 after surpassing Thomas Lanier, who ranks 28th with 1,247. Williams trails Billy Bennett, who finished with 1,292. The Jackson, Mississippi native ranks sixth among players in the NCAA Division I era. Lipscomb returns 74.1 percent of the offense from 2015-16 that nailed an NCAA era school record 331 shots from beyond the arc. The Bisons also set the school mark for most points in a season with 2,590. Nearly half of the Lipscomb roster is from the Nashville metropolitan area. Seven players (Rob Marberry - Nashville, Cam Miller - Franklin, Nathan Moran - Franklin, Asa Duvall - Brentwood, John Matt Merritt - Nashville, Kenny Cooper - Nashville, Garrison Mathews) call the Music City home. Service and team building The Bisons took a mission trip to Dominican Republic before the start of the season where the team helped build a new playground for the community where the Lipscomb baseball and women s basketball teams had previously made trips and constructed both a baseball field and a basketball court. Sign em up The Bisons added a pair of high school standouts during the early signing period as Ahsan Asadullah from North Clayton High School in Atlanta and Greg Jones from Wakeland High School in Frisco, Texas have inked their National Letters of Intent. Under the Bright Lights As part of the partnership that began in 2012-13 between the Atlantic Sun Conference and ESPN, the Bisons are set to be featured on ESPN3 for all 14 regular-season home games from Allen Arena. The broadcast originates directly from the Lipscomb campus thanks to a significant investment from the University and a grant from the conference. Lipscomb will appear on ESPN3 a total of 22 times in 2016-17 along with making appearances on SEC Network +, Fox Sports Ohio and the OVC Digital Network. LU no more The Lipscomb athletic department recently retired the usage of the interlocking LU mark and any use of the term LU Lipscomb is no longer at liberty to use it in any form or fashion. Defending champion FGCU was tabbed to finish atop of both polls followed by North Florida. Bisons in Allen Arena Lipscomb is 133-70 in Allen Arena. Since the start of the 2004 season, the Bisons hold a 104-38 advantage over visiting opponents. Lipscomb recorded its 50th win in Allen Arena on Jan. 9, 2007 with an 89-68 victory over Mercer. The 100th win at Allen Arena came on Jan. 30, 2012 with an 82-68 win over Jacksonville. Allen Arena hosted the 2008 and 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournaments when the championship was at pre-determined sites. S or No S The most commonly accepted plural of bison is bison, but at Lipscomb we are the Bisons. The unabridged Oxford English dictionary includes Bisons as a proper usage. Time to get a license to drive The Bisons are in the 16th season of basketball in the NCAA era. History Lesson Lipscomb University was established in 1891 by David Lipscomb and James A. Harding as the Nashville Bible School. Nearly 30 years later, the school was renamed David Lipscomb College after Lipscomb passed away. In 1988, Lipscomb became known as David Lipscomb University, but, in 1994, the David was legally dropped. Lipscomb is affiliated with the Churches of Christ. We Battle The Battle of the Boulevard is an annual rivalry against Belmont University, located less than three miles from each other down Belmont Boulevard. Since Dec. 11, 1953, the two schools have faced off 137 times with Lipscomb leading the series 73-64. Despite being in separate conferences, the two schools will play each other twice this season. The series has recently been tabbed by Bleacher Report as one of the top-10 Under-the-radar rivalries in men s college basketball. The Battle was listed at No. 4 on the list. Let s Score 4000+ points The top two all-time leading scorers in college basketball history (NCAA or NAIA) belong to the Lipscomb Bisons. John Pierce is college basketball s all-time leading scorer with 4,230 career points and current Lipscomb AD Philip Hutcheson, who concluded his career as the nation s alltime leading scorer, ranks second all-time with 4,106 career points. The NCAA record for career points is held by LSU s Pistol Pete Maravich, who totaled 3,667 points. NAIA Powerhouse From 1988-2001, Lipscomb won more basketball games than any other college or university in the nation, posting an amazing 356 wins and only 56 losses. Prior to the impressive streak, Lipscomb won the 1986 NAIA national championship. The Bisons averaged more than 32 wins per year and, in 1990, set a national record by winning 41 games. Lipscomb finished in the NAIA Top 20 for 13 straight seasons, including seven topfive finishes in the last 10 years in the NAIA. As part of that era, three members of the program have been inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Former coach Don Meyer is joined by players Philip Hutcheson and John Pierce in the Hall of Fame. Head Coach Casey Alexander Casey Alexander was named the 18th head coach of the Lipscomb University program in May 2013 taking over the team following a two-year stint as head coach at Stetson University. Casey has been part of successful programs wherever he has been, said Lipscomb director of Athletics Philip Hutcheson. But, what I m most impressed with is his understanding of the spirit, character and mission of Lipscomb University. He shares our values and is a proven player and coach. Casey has observed the Lipscomb program for a long time, and he understands in his bones who we are. Alexander finished his first season at the helm with the Bisons posting a 10-8 record in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The team rebounded from an 0-4 start to league action to win 10- of-14 to finish the regular season in a 3-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings. Overall, Lipscomb finished 15-15 on the year and averaged 75.9 points per game, a figure that ranked third in the A-Sun. The Bisons led the league in three pointers making 9.2 per outing. A big part of the success of the 2013-14 team came from freshman duo J.C. Hampton and Josh Williams, who each earned A-Sun All-Freshman honors for their play on the court as rookies. Alexander s second squad of his tenure in 2014-15 finished 14-17 overall and 7-7 in Atlantic Sun play. That record would see the Bisons tie for fourth in the standings but have to make a trip to Northern Kentucky in the opening round of the playoffs where Lipscomb would notch a 76-73 overtime win over the Norse. That win marked the first postseason victory for the Purple and Gold since 2010. Williams would finish second in the league in scoring and earn first-team All Atlantic Sun honors for his play. Before joining the Bisons in 2013, Alexander led the Stetson to a third-place finish in the A-Sun standings. Stetson s 11-7 finish in league play marked only the second time in the last decade that the Hatters finished third or higher in the conference standings. Stan Van Gundy, former Orlando Magic head coach, said Alexander is the kind of coach every parent would like their son to play for. Casey is a great fit for Lipscomb, he said. He has been around success and knows what it takes to win games. He is one of the finest teachers of the game that I have been privileged to watch. He sets high standards for himself and his players and is very demanding yet remains calm in all situations. His players will not only succeed and become better players, he will be the role model that they need to achieve great things in their lives after basketball. Alexander has a unique understanding of Lipscomb s institutional mission. Casey clearly understands the mission of the university, said Scott McDowell, vice president for student development and dean of campus life at Lipscomb. He has the desire to continue to raise the bar for the basketball program spiritually and to help make that mission come to life in the athletic realm of campus life. His teams are known to be disciplined and hard-working, and I believe he will continue to recruit players who want to be a part of the mission and culture of Lipscomb University. A trademark of Alexander s coaching philosophy is recruiting players who are committed to playing hard and playing as a team. We work hard to find the right players and coaches on the front end. When you get this type of player, you can accomplish great things. In 2012-13 at Stetson, the Hatters ranked among the nation s best in sharing the ball as Alexander s squad ranked eighth nationally averaging 16.2 assists per game. Stetson also ranked second in the A-Sun in scoring averaging 70.3 points per game finishing just behind the high-octane Florida Gulf Coast offense in the scoring race. The Hatters also ranked second in the conference in field goal percentage (.456), three point field goal percentage (.329) and free throw percentage (.705). Under Alexander s Adam Pegg earned 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Men s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his play on the court and his work in the classroom. The center was also named All-Atlantic Sun Conference first-team after finishing as the only player in the league to finish in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. Prior to taking his first head coaching role at Stetson, Alexander spent 16 years on the bench with Belmont head coach Rick Byrd. Casey played and coached for me and I can say that he is as competitive as any player I ve ever coached, said Byrd, head coach of the Belmont University men s basketball team. He is a great leader. He was born to coach and is an outstanding teacher of the game. During that span, the Bruins captured four Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championships, made four trips to the NCAA Tournament and one NIT appearance. While still at Belmont, Alexander was named the No. 5 Mid-Major Assistant Coach by national college basketball Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports. Belmont will always be an important part of my life, Alexander said. I value that experience and the people who are there. The things that I love about that part of my life are what attract me to Lipscomb. It s what allows me to jump in with both feet and to be ready to go. Before putting on the suit and tie on the sidelines, Alexander was a standout player for Belmont ( 92-95) leading the Bruins to a 119-25 record during his playing career. He established himself among the career leaders in a number of categories and was inducted into the Belmont Hall of Fame in 2005. A three-sport standout in high school, Alexander helped lead Brentwood Academy to a pair of state titles. Alexander and his wife, the former Sunni Dixon, have three children, Allie, 17; Reed, 14; and Mason, 11.
