Coaching Staff JAY WALSH HEAD COACH (1ST SEASON) 1 Jay Walsh is in his first year as the head men's tennis coach at Northern Colorado. Walsh was hired at Northern Colorado in September 2004 and has worked to bring the men s team to the Division I level. Thru an almost complete D-I schedule to higher training and conditioning standards, as well as technical improvement commitments, the men s team continues to improve and prepare for competition at the Division I level. Walsh is a native of Redding, Calif., and while growing up he was a top ranked junior player in northern California. After high school, Walsh went on to play professional tournaments before taking a position at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy. At Van Der Meer he trained under world class coaches and coached top ranked junior players. Walsh left Van Der Meer at the age of 24 to become the youngest Division I Head Coach in the country at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). While at VMI he led a team that was winless in three years to a seven-win season before the university eliminated their golf and tennis programs. In March 2003, Jay started his own tennis club management company at the age of 25. His company is located in the south Denver-metro area and services over 600 people. ROSEMARY FRI DIRECTOR OF TENNIS Rosemary Fri serves as the coordinator of the UNC tennis programs and has coached the women's team since 1963... the year of its inception. During her tenure, the UNC women have compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including two fourth-place showings at the NCAA Division II Championships (1983, 1992). The women's team has also notched 18 top-20 rankings and won 16 conference or regional championships. Fri has coached two singles national champions, one singles runner-up, three doubles national champions, one doubles runner-up, and 15 All-Americans. In 2001, the UNC women's team won its 11th consecutive North Central Conference title and its 12th conference championship in the past 13 years. The Bears qualified for the NCAA Division II Team Championships 10 of the 11 years from 1992-2003. Over the years, Fri has been recognized often for her accomplishments. In 1981 and 1992 she received the Wilson Coach of the Year Award. In 1992 the Colorado Sportswomen also honored Fri as Coach of the Year. She was named the 1994 Division II Midwest Regional Coach of the Year and has been recognized by the North Central Conference on several occasions. Fri was one of eight inducted into the first class of the UNC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. Her 1983 women's tennis squad was inducted into the UNC Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2001. On Feb. 21, 2003, Fri was inducted into the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame.

2 Season Preview - Player Profiles The University of Northern Colorado men s tennis team will have a relatively new look in the 2004-05 season. The Bears are in their second season of a fouryear transition to Division I tennis and have jumped into the move full boar. Under the direction of first-year head coach Jay Walsh, the Bears will be taking on a full Division I schedule that features only two matches against Division II opponents. I felt like if we are going to be Division I we need to see Division I team on a match-by-match basis, Walsh said. Since we are not eligible for the postseason, I thought it would be best to play some lower level Division I teams to see where we match up and where we need to be when we are eligible for the NCAA championships. The Bears return five of their six singles starters from last season and Walsh said that can only help in the transition. We have a very young squad, but they were thrown into the mix last season as a young squad, Walsh said. The best way to improve is to get out Junior Jeff Hall led the Bears in singles wins last season with 11 triumphs at No. 2 singles. and play the best and that is what most of our guys did last season. Sophomore Casey Ross returns to the No. 1 singles slot which he held down last season. Ross tallied a singles mark of 7-15 as a true freshman. Junior Jeff Hall is the leading returner in regard to singles victories. Hall went 11-11 at No. 2 singles. Junior Peter Weyhrich also returns at No. 3 singles, where he posted a mark of 9-13. Junior Chris Minihan went 10-11 last season at No. 6 singles and could move up this season. Chris Manichanh returns to the team this year after taking a year off from tennis. J.P. Kaloi will redshirt this season. Walsh will also mix in some newcomers into the lineup and those individuals include Jeremy Behm-Meyer, Kollman Gearhart and Paul Tschetter. Walsh said he would mix and match the doubles pairings throughout the season until he felt comfortable with how the duos were playing together.
