VOLUME 24 NUMBER 9 SEPTEMBER 2013 MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR 25 th ANNIVERSARY EDITION Charles and Margaret Appenzeller live at 306 Townbridge. They moved to Sweetwater in 1991 and are full-time residents. They moved here from Miami, Florida. have three children and five grandchildren. They Charles retired from Gerber Baby Foods in 1993. Margaret retired from J. M. Fields in Winter Haven in 1993. They knew this Central Florida area and Margaret stopped to take a look at Sweetwater. They liked the fact that you would own your land. Also, our community looked much nicer than the other ones in this area. Once they moved in, they took part in the many Sweetwater activities and volunteered their time wherever needed. Margaret also got involved with ceramics. They bought an Air Stream trailer, joined an Air Stream club, and traveled out West for several years. Margaret recently suffered a stroke and is recovering nicely, but this has curtailed their traveling. Charles was featured in the Lakeland Ledger a few months ago, which honored him for serving in the Army during the Korean War.

September 2013 Page 02 MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR 25 th ANNIVERSARY EDITION Pat Johnson lives at 270 Dartmouth. She is a part-time resident who splits her time between Florida and Michigan. She and husband Ed bought their home in 1990 and moved into it in 1991. Both Pat and Ed graduated from the same high school in Rock Michigan in the Upper Peninsula, and they both graduated from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. They are second generation American-born Finns whose grandmothers were best friends. Ed taught seven years but decided to switch careers and went to work at Univac. From there he got into the groundwork of the computer industry and worked in software development at Bendix Corporation and Cummins Engines. He retired from Cummins in 1988. Pat taught school for 29 years, mostly as a kindergarten teacher. She retired in June of 1989. They have two children, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ed and Pat made many trips to Florida over the years because their parents lived in West Palm Beach. When they were retired they happened to see an ad for Sweetwater in the AARP magazine. Sweetwater offered three days and two nights to visit and look over the community. They decided to check things out and stayed in a guesthouse. Al and Kay Winslow took them around. Because of the friendly people, the fact that they would own their land, and that Sweetwater provided access to Lake Henry (Ed liked to fish and had a pontoon boat), they bought a home and settled in. They immediately got involved in Sweetwater activities. Pat enjoyed line dancing and joined the Sweetwater Chorus. Both she and Ed, as Life Master bridge players, traveled to bridge tournaments all over Florida. Ed was also a game director at the Winter Haven Bridge Club. He enjoyed golf and was secretary of the Tuesday league for many years and organized the Friday men's golf. They both volunteered on Derby Day and Ed ran the pari-mutuel window. Once a month Ed would go over to the Gulf on a deep-sea fishing trip with Sweetwater buddies. He also was director of the Sweetwater Annual Shareholders meeting/election. They celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary in June of 2006, but sadly, Ed passed away in July of that year. Pat continues to play bridge, sing in the Sweetwater Chorus (she is an original member of the Saucy Sisters), and enjoys her family when they come to visit. Jan Swayze

September 2013 Page 03 HOW TO SUBMIT ARTICLES Articles for Sweet Times may be submitted for consideration for publication by placing them in the box at the clubhouse. We must have your name and phone number, in case we have questions. The deadline is the 22 nd of every month. If you would like to have your anniversary included in Sweet Times, we will need to know the month, day, and how many years you are celebrating. We need this information before the deadline for the issue in which it should appear. As a reminder, we do not retain anniversary dates from year to year, so you will need to submit the date to us each year. Changes or items for the calendar should be submitted by whoever is in charge of that event. We do keep a listing of birthdays, but if yours is not already included, we need the month and day only. Thank you. June and Howard Shaw, Editors LET'S GET SILLY! The Sweetwater Chorus will begin rehearsals on Monday, November 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Clubhouse Ballroom. This year's concert will be a recipe of fun songs with some silly lyrics sprinkled in adding flavor and spice to our performance. Come join us for the merriment. Jan Swayze in the past month our Welcome Committee welcomed 2 new residents to Sweetwater Community. Chip and Kathy Kenz at 290 Dartmouth Drive. Chip and Kathy are from Beloit, Wisconsin. If you have moved to Sweetwater Golf and Tennis Club in the last six months and have not been visited please contact Ruth Freer 956-3602 or Jane Lawson at 956-4218. Pictures of our new Sweetwater residents are posted on the photo board in the Clubhouse.

September 2013 Page 11 THANK YOU A sincere thank you to all the fine Sweetwater folks who sent cards and donations in memory of Mark L. Dierdorf who passed away on July 21, 2013. Your thoughtfulness, friendship and love is what makes Sweetwater such a wonderful place to live. Thank you again. Judie and little Chewy and the rest of our family Hi Just a note to express my thanks for all the birthday cards I received for my 90th birthday. I enjoyed each one. Matt Rehberger Thank you, Sweetwater Family, for all the prayers, calls, and cards at the recent death of my mom. It's great to be part of a community of people who care and who always make a hard occasion easier. It's good to be Home!!! Carolyn Amstutz Dear Sweetwater, Thanks for all the get well cards, calls, visits, and food (Ken was very thankful). The walker, crutches, exercise bike, and a Margaritaville tee shirt were all very much appreciated. If I needed it, it was at my doorstep in 5 minutes, what a great community! Missing golf a lot, hope to be back on the course by early October. Hugs all around! Thanks again, Ken & Melissa 863-268-8085 PS. Never have a Bunionectomy (fancy insurance word for miserable foot surgery).

September 2013 Page 13 YARDSALE UPDATE Just a reminder to everyone that we are taking all items for the annual yard sale. We will accept any boxed items, etc. As I stated in the Sweet Times last month,if you have furniture please call Jo Ann Swindelles and let her know what type of furniture you have and she will get in touch with Jim Andrews to pick up the furniture. If you have anything other than furniture, you can call Jim Andrews at 604-8127 and he will make arrangements to pick up your items. Ladies-if you are in Sweetwater or at home - check those jewelry boxes for jewelry that you don't wear any more or that you just want to get rid of. We are always looking for jewelry for our jewelry table. If you are in Sweetwater, please drop off the jewelry to Jeanette DeLisi at 178 Dartmouth. Remember the success of the yard sale is because of community-wide participation, and the profit we make enables us to have events in Sweetwater for the entire community. If you have any questions please call Marge Graber at 518-421-1585. Marge Graber What the world really needs is a vegetarian mosquito. Give a child an inch and he thinks he's a ruler. An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less. The hardest thing some folks can do is to find a way to correct a mistake without admitting they made one. When you have no desire to chase other things, you can always head to the green and chase after golf balls. I have always felt a gift diamond shines so much better than one you buy for yourself.
