June 2018 The JetHawks Journal The Official Newsletter of the Flight Crew Booster Club Words From the Chair Protection for players the latest edition of Baseball America had a very interesting article on protection for batters. Catch a Brewers Class A game this year and you may wonder if the clubs hitters are some of the unluckiest players around. Player after player will step to the plate with a batting helmet that sports a C-flap an additional bit of protection that stretches to cover a hitter s check and jawbone. Normally hitters wear the C-flap after they ve returned from a serious facial injury. The extra protection helps ensure that a player doesn t suffer a follow-up injury. This year the Brewers have strongly suggested to all of their minor league position players that they wear the C-flap. For all Brewers hitters at the Rookie, short-season or Class A level, it will be mandated. A couple of years ago, the C-flap and other similar devices were used only by players who had been injured. Now a number of major league stars are wearing them to prevent injury. It s something the hitters seem pretty comfortable using initially, and there isn t much of an adjustment period for them before they really want to have them Brewers farm director Tom Flanagan said. This seems to be a very good feature that can be added to existing batting helmets, they can save players from a very serious injury. Many of the JetHawks players are using this protection. Did you know that 29 percent of major leaguers and 28 percent of minor leaguers on opening day rosters were born outside of the U.S.? Also of the 2,142 U.S. college draft eligible players in the minors on opening day, a full 70% of them came from 4 year college programs, 22% from High School programs, and 8 % from Junior College programs. By 2020, the Texas Rangers will move into a new $1.1 billion dollar retractable-roof ball park that broke ground in September 2017. This new 41,000-seat ball park is supposed to offer a fresh way to experience baseball in Arlington. The Colorado Rockies low Class A Asheville pitcher Justin Lawrence on May 15 (the day Zach Wilson was planning to tell Justin he was headed to JetHawks) took the mound in the ninth and tore his right lat muscle, ending his 2018 season. Louisville Slugger debuts seamless decals on its MLB Prime wood bats. Louisville Slugger wanted to find a way to place brand logs on their highest-end wood bats. Seamless Decals, a completely new process that places markings below the final top coat finish on a wood bat. In the past, a vinyl decal had the potential to fade or fall off in heavy use. Laser engraving applies extra pressure into the wood. With the seamless process the logos should not come off and also this process has no impact on the wood of the bat according to Louisville Slugger.
