Greystanes Gazette ISSUE 1 22 SEPTEMBER 2017 Welcome to everyone to the 2017-2018 season of Little Athletics at Greystanes which we are sure will be another great year for the club. For those of you that are new our entire club is run on a volunteer basis. All of the committee members you see around are not paid and are purely there in a volunteer capacity and more often than not will miss watching their own children compete to ensure that the day is run as smoothly as it is for everyone. By now each of the age groups should have nominated someone to be there Age Manager which does not sound anywhere near as scary as it sounds, but is the person responsible to make sure the group is at the right event at the right time on the day. There is always something to assist with on the day and we need as many parent helpers as possible out on the ground helping, be it marshalling, time keeping, recording or measuring. If you are unsure of what you can do to help please feel free to speak to one of the committee members around the field or ask the age manager for your group, anyone of which would be more than happy to let you know what you can do to help out. If an age group does not have enough parent helpers this can delay them in being able to complete all of their events for the day and possibly will hold up other age groups, therefore we ask that all parents or carers be out on the field assisting in some capacity and not simply sitting on the seats watching. If you have several children competing we ask that you check each of the age groups your child is in and to please go with the group that needs the most assistance. We often find the younger age groups have a lot of parent helpers available but the older age groups tend to not have enough parents to help run their events.

Little Athletics is not a drop and run sport that children can be collected from at a later time. In the event that the club finds an athlete without a responsible adult in attendance that child s results may not be recorded for that week. If you are not aware the ice blocks are not paid for by the club and are paid for by the parents of each age group. To be fair to everyone we ask that each parent has at least one turn of buying ice blocks for their child s age group so the same parents are not caught buying them every single week. There is no set roster in place so don t be afraid of calling out I ll grab the ice blocks this week! Age mangers we ask that you please stick to the programme especially in these first few weeks so we can observe how events are running and make any adjustments if required. Please check that each child is wearing the correct registration number that has been allocated to them. If you find that it is wrong on the running sheet please circle rather than cross out as this will bring it to our attention to check. With the warmer weather starting to set in please remember to make sure your child has some sunscreen on and has plenty of water to drink. Each age group has a tub to place the drinks into. When moving between events please take caution and do so in a safe manner. In particular make sure you stay well clear of the witches hats near the discus cages/shot put areas and look to see there is not a race in progress before crossing the circular track or straight track. Training is held every Monday and Wednesday night at our ground between 6.30pm 7.30pm for u7s and up. There is no cost to attend training and it is not compulsory but simply a chance for you to improve your technique. Our coaches cover runs, jumps and throws and we are very grateful and lucky they voluntarily give up their time to help out our athletes. Please note that there will be no training now until after the school holidays. During the season there are a number of carnival and gala days that are held some of which you can turn up to on the day and others that you need to register for prior to the day. Our first event for the year is coming up on Sunday 8 October with the Holroyd Shield Carnival which is being hosted this year by Girraween. This is a fun competition between Greystanes, Holroyd, Girraween and Smithfield with points allocated across the day as to each event entered and one club will win the Perpetual Shield at the end of the day. It s

been quite a few years since we have won so we would love as many of you as possible to join us on the day to help us try and claim victory. Entries for the zone multi are $10 and close on Saturday 30 September. Please see Tracy at the circular track for further details. For further details of the upcoming gala days and carnivals please see the flyers attached to the back of this newsletter, the noticeboards near the canteen or our website which has a full listing. Also attached is an information day coming up on Saturday 7 October at Fairfield from 2.30pm. It s a great opportunity to learn about Little Athletics and we encourage all parents, particularly all of the age managers to attend. Children are able to attend and it is also a good opportunity for them to have their technique corrected while at the information day. Remember to like us on Facebook or download our app which is available on your smartphone or tablet via the Apple or Google Play app store as this is the best way to keep up to date with all the latest news for the club and to check for any cancellations due to wet weather. A guide to downloading the app can be found at the back of our newsletter. For more info see the following websites: www.greystaneslac.com.au www.laansw.com.au

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS We would like to thank all of our generous sponsors for this year. We are always looking for new sponsors so if you or anyone you know may be interested in sponsoring our club please check out our sponsorship packages available on our website or see our Sponsorship and Fundraising Co-Ordinator Kristy Nader for further information.
