Dear Fellow Cattle Men and Women, This is our 18th year of selling bulls. We make our living from the cattle and beef business. We are a seedstock producer, grow cattle and are focused on selling the best beef in the business. It looks like cattle prices are going to be low for quite a while. Combinations of a strong dollar, potential trade wars, and competition by foreign producers for the US export market, has placed all agricultural commodities in a tough spot. Low prices force one to consider how to make money in this type of climate. More production from the same land, keeping costs low, and obtaining above average premiums, are things one must focus on. Year in and year out; we breed and sell bulls that are designed to do just that! A 15% increase in stocking rates can be achieved with cattle that have been selected for low RFI (residual feed intake). More calves to sell from the same acreage is more money in your pocket. Calves that are born unassisted, that are heavy weaning, fast growing and produce carcasses that have 12-15 ribeyes, that are choice or better, will make you more money. If things weren t complicated enough, in May of 2016, the USDA implemented a rule requiring a special label and special cooking instructions on every piece of meat that has been mechanically tenderized. Now what you re going to see is a reduction in value for breeds that are known to have issues with being tough. And breeds that are known for tenderness will increase in value compared to the others. There is no room for tough beef in the market place! In addition to breeding for outstanding carcass merits, we breed for structural soundness (good feet and legs), calving ease, heavy weaning weights and females that are fertile, have great udders and produce enough milk for a calf to express its genetic potential. We are very proud of the set of bulls that are being sold in this offering, representing Angus, Braunvieh, BraunAngus and Simmental genetics. Top indexing bulls are designated as Brasstown Elite bulls because of their likelihood of siring calves that will be outstanding in our Brasstown Beef program. The bulls listed with the Brasstown Beef logo by their side are the ones from which we will offer our Bull Deal, buying the calves and paying a premium. The premiums are worth $60-$85 per head more than if the calves are sold through conventional channels! Residual Feed Intake (RFI) Ridgefield Farm utilizes a GrowSafe System to obtain actual feed intake data across a 70-day test period. RFI is the difference between actual intake and expected intake (calculated based upon the age, size, gain and sex of a given animal utilizing academically accepted metabolic formulas). Cattle consuming less than expected feed are given negative values and those consuming more than expected are given positive values. The RFI data is then used in connection with the current cost of feed to calculate the actual increase or decrease in the cost of feed for each animal during the testing period. In studies conducted by the University of West Virginia and the University of Missouri, heifers were retained from low RFI bulls for two successive generations. Both studies found that these low RFI sired females provided a significant opportunity to increase stocking rates from 12% in lactating cows to 20% for dry ones.
