DUNES FIELD TRIP The 5 th grade went on a field trip to the Dunes National Lakeshore. There were 2 different parts to the field trip: the hike and the Nature Center. We got to see many different plants and animals that survive at the Dunes. The 5 th graders got to climb Mt. Tom which is 192 feet high. The scenery was magnificent! After the hike we went into the Nature center and saw many different animals. We got to pet: A BOX TURTLE A SNAKE A FROG A SALAMANDER And if you were lucky you got to see the raccoon eating outside the window! The raccoon seems to come at the same time every day. Did you get to see the raccoon?

Mr. Matthys Do you know who Mr. Matthys is? Well he is a 6 th grade teacher. He is retiring this year. Mr. Matthys has been teaching for 34 years. Surprisingly only 29 of these years were at Liberty. He started college not wanting to teach. After 2 years of college he changed his mind. He doesn t know what he is going to do when he is retired. He is a great teacher. Good Bye Mr. Matthys. You will be missed. By: Morgan Marmolejo Mrs. McGinty Do you know who Mrs. McGinty is? Well, same as Mr. Matthys she will be retiring this year. She has been teaching for 38 years. She wanted to teach because she likes to work with kids. Mrs. McGinty said that when she retires she will do whatever she wants to do. She was an amazing teacher. Good Bye Mrs. McGinty. You will be missed greatly.

A By: Maddie Juestel This year s 6 th grade Fiesta was very fun and all the students had a really great time. The Fiesta is one day where all 6 th grade students get to perform dances and skits with their social studies class. Any of their relatives were invited. There are also other fun activities like a limbo contest, a piñata full of candy, food, drinks, and spending the whole school day with your friends enjoying the entertainment. The 6 th graders work very hard to prepare for this event, but one of the people that helps put it all together and organizes it is Mr. Matthys. He said, This year was the best Fiesta yet. Also, Mr. Ray helped with the dances for his social studies classes. Good job 6 th grade students and I hope you had fun!

Movie Hunger Games Review The Hunger Games is about a girl named Katniss who lives in a world powered by The Capitol. Each area is separated by 12 districts and Katniss lives in the poorest district, district 12. Many years ago, there was a rebellion against the capitol and the districts lost. So since their act of treason, The Capitol made the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a game when two competitors from each district, a boy and girl have to fight to the death to punish them. In this movie, Katniss volunteers to go to the Hunger Games instead of her younger sister Primrose that was chosen. Katniss has been chosen along with a boy named Peeta. In the games they have to act as if they love each other to get sponsors. Sponsors are people who can help the contestants by sending them much needed equipment. In the games near the end there is a rule change which is if you are from the same district you both can win instead of just one person. You ll have to go to see the movie to find out who wins and if they live or not. This is a great movie. I hope you see it.

Interview with Mr. Guernsey Topic: Goodbye 6 th Graders! Mr. Guernsey wants to tell each student: To my 6 th grade students, good luck at the middle school, you have been a fantastic group of students who I will truly miss. He would like to tell his leaving teachers: Mr. Matthys and Mrs. McGinty, thank you for your years of service to our students. You ve both been an inspiration to us all by your superb commitment to your profession and to the students and staff of LIS. He hopes that the 6 th grade students take this away from the last 2 years My hope is that students enjoyed their 2 years at LIS and that it was a place where they learned and enjoyed. Highlights of things that Mr. Guernsey enjoyed! This was by far the best Fiesta that I ve ever been a part of! The students worked so hard. Tips for the next school years: Do your best in school! Also, have fun! Shout outs: HEYYY!!! By: Elle Hodge <3

This year, London, England will be hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics. This historical event only occurs every four years. Everybody will have all eyes on the fierce competition. Some events include swimming, basketball, track, high jump, rowing, archery, triathlon, diving, gymnastics, and javelin throwing. Famous figures such as Michael Phelps, Nastia Liukin, and LeBron James will compete for a gold medal for their country. Records will be broken; dreams will be broken, too. Millions will tune in to observe what the athletes will do. I wish luck to all competitors!

Expert Spellers Liberty Intermediate School Spelling Bee Liberty Intermediate School fifth graders, left to right, Nathan (third place), Maddi (first), and Madison (second) were the winners of the school level spelling bee. Maddi represented LIS at the fifth grade Porter County Spelling Bee on May 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Benjamin Franklin Middle School. She received 7 th place in the Porter County Spelling Bee. Way to go Maddi. We are proud of you! This is how Maddi made her way to the Porter County Spelling Bee. First each homeroom had a competition to find two representatives for their homeroom. Then all the homeroom representatives competed against each other to have a LIS representative. Congratulations to Maddie and all of the homeroom representatives.
