MAPLE RIVER HARDWOOD CLASSIC The Maple River Hardwood Classic began in 2010. The Classic was meant to bring uncommon opponents from throughout the state together to get high quality competition for each team participating as well as entertain the fans with great early season basketball! 2010 THE INAUGURAL TOURNAMENT The first Maple River Hardwood Classic had three different teams (Byron, Maple River, Kenyon-Wanamingo) in the tournament that were ranked at one point during the year. In game 1, Byron put on a defensive show that would go down in the record books holding LeSueur-Henderson to 27 points. Byron limited LSH to 27.9% from the field en route to the easy 56-27 victory. Senior Evan Morris paced the Bears with 19 points and 5 rebounds. In the nightcap on day 1, Maple River outlasted KW 58-56. In a game that was see-saw throughout, the Eagles were able to force 21 KW turnovers to win. Junior Josiah Breiter came off the bench to score 13 points for the Eagles. In the finals, two ranked teams went head-to-head in the early season classic. Maple River was able to hold Byron to 39.3% shooting and prevailed 62-58 for the first championship. During the first classic, the Saturday portion of the tournament was postponed due to inclement weather. The Championship game between Maple River and Byron was played the following Saturday, while the third place game between Kenyon-Wanamingo and LeSueur-Henderson was played in Kenyon on December 23 rd.
