It will be the first time SFA has taken on Oklahoma since the 2007-08 season when the Jacks left Norman with a 66-62 win over the Blake Griffin-led Sooners, a signature non-conference win in a season that peaked in SFA s first-ever Southland Conference title. THE LAST TIME OUT SFA got a career-high 24 points from Desmond Haymon and hit beter than 59 percent from the floor, needing all the offense it could get to hold off a pesky Lubbock Christian squad, 78-67, on Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA put four players in double figures, led by Haymon, who hit eight of his 10 shots from the field - including a career-best four from downtown - to go with five rebounds. Meanwhile, Taylor Smith also continued his run of solid play, going for 16 points, five rebounds and four blocks. In addition, Antonio Bostic added 12 and Jacob Parker 11 while Hal Bateman dished out six of SFA s 17 assists on the night. UP NEXT The Jacks get just two days off before hosting Grambling in its final tune up before opening Southland Conference play after a nine-day layoff on December 29 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. SFA went all of 2011-12 without allowing 70 points to an opponent and has done so in the first eight games of this season. SFA has taken on 10 teams from the state of Oklahoma in the Danny Kaspar era, winning each of the last nine from Texas neighbor to the north. The last time SFA lost to a team from Oklahoma was a 78-57 loss to Oral Roberts in Tulsa during the 2001-02 season. After outrebounding Lubbock Christian, 31-21, on Saturday, SFA has now outrebounded 17 of its last 18 opponents with its win over San Diego being the only occasion it has not happened when the Toreros drew even on the boards, 26-26. SFA is 41-0 vs non-division I programs in the Danny Kaspar era. Stephen F. Austin and Wisconsin are the only two programs in the nation to be ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense each of the last five seasons. SERIES vs OKLAHOMA Series vs. OU: Tied, 1-1 Last 5 Meetings 2007-08 at Oklahoma W 66-62 1980-81 at Oklahoma L 88-55 Last Meeting Josh Alexander finished with a game-high 19 points at Oklahoma and calmly knocked down a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds left to seal the Lumberjacks 66-62 win over the Sooners. The victory was SFA s first against a Big 12 Conference opponent since the Lumberjacks knocked off Baylor on the road in 2003, and extended SFA s win streak to five games, including three straight on the road, and tying the Lumberjacks best start to a season since 1981-82. OU came into the game shooting.485 from the floor and.390 from 3-point range, but SFA held OU to 40 percent from the field and the Sooners went 2-for- 14 from behind the arc and didn t have a three until late in the second half. Series Notes The Jacks have played twice in Norman, winning at the Lloyd Noble Center in the 2007-08 season behind 19 points from Josh Alexander and 16 from Matt Kingsley. SITTIN ON 20: The Jacks have six 20-win campaigns since becoming a Division I program in 1988. All six of those 20-win seasons have come under Danny Kaspar. SUB-SEVENTY: SFA has held each of its 32 opponents under 70 points in 2011-12, and has done the same in each of its first eight games of 2012-13 to extend its schoolrecord streak of sub-70 defensive performances to 40. The last team to score 70 on the Jacks was Northwestern State, when they did so in a 70-65 win over SFA in 2010-11 in Natchitoches, La. LUMBERJACK HONOR ROLL ANTONIO BOSTIC - Preseason all-slc First Team - SLC Player of the Week (11/19/12) TAYLOR SMITH - Preseason all-slc First Team OKLAHOMA HOMECOMING: Jacob Parker had a career afternoon in SFA s win at Tulsa, scoring a career-high 16 points and pulling down four rebounds. A native of Bixby, Okla., which is just outside of Tulsa, Parker hit seven of his 10 shots from the field, including a pair of three-point buckets. AGAINST THE BIG XII: SFA is 2-11 against teams from the Big XII in 12 years under head coach Danny Kaspar. The Lumberjacks knocked off Baylor, 79-57, in Waco during the 2003-04 season and defeated Oklahoma, 66-62, on the road in 2007-08. This year the Jacks play just one Big XII opponent, making their first trip to Norman since their upset of the Sooners in 2007. DEFENSE FIRST: The Lumberjacks finished third in the nation in scoring defense at 54.7 points per game allowed in 2011-12, a new school record. SFA has finished the year ranked among the top 10 in scoring defense in each of the last five seasons, including leading the nation in 2011 with 56.7 points per game and No. 2 rankings in both 2008 and 2009. This year has started off no different as SFA is leading the nation in scoring defense again, allowing just 49.5 points per game through its first eight contests, holding four of its opponents below 60 points. SURRENDERING THE ARC: As one of the top defensive teams in the nation over the past decade, the Jacks have done a solid job of defending the three-point shot; however, there have been nights when a team has caught fire from distance, including most recently Saturday when Lubbock Christian nailed 10 of their 22 three-point tries. The 10 triples were the most allowed by the Jacks since last year when High Point hit 11 in February, but was just the third time in the past six seasons that an SFA opponent has made at least 10 threes. HOME NON-CONFERENCE: SFA has won 38 of its last 40 home, non-conference games, dating to the 2006-07 season. Each of those two losses have been by two points apiece, coming to Florida International in 2011-12 and Texas Tech in 2009-10. The Lumberjacks are now 66-5, overall, in home, non-conference games in 13 seasons under head coach Danny Kaspar. IT S BEEN A WHILE: Not since the 1957-58 season had the Jacks pulled off what they managed to pull off in its season opener vs Howard Payne. SFA held HPU to just 30 points on the night, the least amount scored by an SFA opponent since Sam Houston State put up 30 in a 40-30 loss to the Jacks in the 1957-58 season. Against the Yellow Jackets, SFA allowed just 15 shots to fall from the floor, none from beyond the arc and HPU missed its only free throw of the game. CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARDS: SFA did not have a single player in the Southland Conference top 10 in rebounding in 2011-12, but this year sports the league s No. 3 rebounder in Taylor Smith (7.3 rpg) and is already third in the league in rebound margin, pulling down 7.6 rebounds per contest more than its opponent, just one year after leading the Southland in rebound margin (+7.1 rpg). The Jacks have not been outrebounded by an opponent in seven tries this season. HAL DO YOU DO?: Senior point guard Hal Bateman dished out a career-high 11 assists in SFA s season-opening win over Howard Payne, the most for a Lumberjack since Eric Bell had 11 dimes in a road win at Northern Illinois during the 2007-08 season. Three games later he doled out another 10, making him the first Jack since Marcus Clark in 2004-05 to have multiple games in the same season with 10+ assists. 3 SFA vs 2012-13 OPPONENTS Howard Payne 48-30 Florida International 1-1 Jarvis Christian 4-0 Tulsa 2-0 San Diego 3-1 Texas A&M 3-19 LSU Shreveport 1-0 Lubbock Christian 1-0 Oklahoma 1-1 Grambling 3-2 Southeastern La.* 25-14 Central Arkansas* 8-0 Oral Roberts* 4-5 Sam Houston State* 95-99 A&M-Corpus* 9-3 McNeese State* 39-37 Nicholls* 31-23 Lamar* 25-25 Northwestern State* 51-60 DIVISION I TEAMS IN TEXAS Rk. Five of the threes came from junior transfer Deshaunt Walker, and the 10 triples were the most since the Jacks hit 10 in a win over Chicago State in 2010 BLOCK PARTY: Taylor Smith averaged 1.31 blocks pe rgame in less than 20 minutes of play as a junior, but this year that number is expected to skyrocket, and through four games he has not disappointed. Smith, who was a two-time league defensive player of the year at McLennan CC before coming to SFA, has 22 blocks (2.8 bpg) in the first eight games of the season. Only two SFA players in the Division I era have blocked more shots in a single season than Smith s 42 a year ago and only one Lumberjack has ever led the league in blocks -- Tim Holloway in 1989-90. HOME DEFENSE: SFA is known for its defensive prowess, but it is even moreso evident when playing at William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA has held its opponents to 50 points or fewer in 17 of 36 games at home in the last three seasons, allowing just 51.6 points per game at home in 2010-11 and 53.1 points per game in 2011-12. It is allowing just 46.6 points per game through five home games this season. HALF WAY THERE: The Jacks were not at their best when playing from behind in 2011-12, but were exceptional when playing from out in front. That was most evident by the fact that the Jacks went 19-1 a year ago when taking a lead into the half. Conversely, SFA was 1-11 when trailing at the break. This season has followed suit with the Jacks getting victories after taking a halftime lead into the locker room in each of its seven wins, having held four of those opponents to less than 20 points in the opening period. SAFE AT HOME: In 12-plus seasons under head coach Danny Kaspar, the Lumberjacks have compiled a 141-35 (.798) record in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA is 337-126 (.726) all-time in the Coliseum. SFA has recorded seven straight seasons and nine campaigns in last 10 years with double-digit wins at home. BOOM BOSTIC: Senior guard Antonio Bostic is averaging right at 10 points per game in eight games this year, but has saved his best performances for the stiffest competition. He s averaging 14.0 point per game vs Division I opponents, including a career-high 23 points in a road win at Florida International that earned him Southland Conference Player of the Week honors. KASPAR KOUNTER: Danny Kaspar picked up his 200th win at SFA in last year s season opener vs Centenary currently stands third all-time at SFA in head coaching wins with 226, trailing only Marshall Brown (345) and Bob Shelton (245). Kaspar also has 445 career wins between his time at SFA and Incarnate Word, second among active Southland Conference to Northwestern State s Mike McConathy. BELOW FIFTY: SFA held 14 opponents below 50 points each of the last two seasons. In 13 seasons under Danny Kaspar the Lumberjacks have held an opponent to 50 points or fewer on 58 occasions, losing just five of those games. This year, SFA has held four of its eight opponents under 50 points. 45-MINUTE MAN: Antonio Bostic played all 45 minutes in a pair of overtime games last season for SFA, marking the most minutes played by any Lumberjack since Josh Alexander played all 55 minutes in a 112-111 SFA win over North Dakota State in triple OT in the 2008-09 season. He played at least 40 minutes in 8 of the final 12 games of last season and finished third in the league in minutes per game with 34.2. Game 1: Stephen F. Austin vs Howard Payne NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin s defense didn t allow Howard Payne to score 20 points in either half as it cruised to an 84-30 season-opening victory Friday night in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. With the victory head coach Danny Kaspar improves to 9-4 in season openers. The Lumberjacks (1-0) finished the game shooting 46 percent from the floor, including a 19-of-33 (.576) performance in the second half, while holding Howard Payne (0-1) to a 15-of-46 (33 percent) effort. SFA showed signs of being an improved team from long range knocking down 10 threepoint shots, its most since Chicago State in 2010. SFA also held a 44-27 advantage on the glass, including 16 offensive rebounds. The Lumberjacks jumped out to an 8-0 lead, and didn t surrender their first basket of the game until 15:31 remaining in the opening half. The six-point deficit would be as close as to victory as the Yellow Jackets would get as the `Jacks closed out the half on a 15-2 run, SFA took a 36-14 lead into the locker room sparked by three SFA triples in the final 1:28 of the half. The `Jacks were 13-of-36 (36 percent) from the floor in the opening half, but converted 5-of-11 (46 percent) from beyond the three-point line. Junior Desmond Haymon scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the opening half, including a 3-of-3 performance from beyond the arc. SFA s defense never allowed Howard Payne to get back into the contest. The Lumberjacks surrendered only seven first-half field goals, and forced the Yellow Jackets into 13 turnovers. In addition to their offensive woes, Howard Payne was outrebounded, 26-14, in the opening 20 minutes. Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Howard Payne vs Stephen F. Austin ran its record to 4-0 with a 57-41 win over Tulsa on Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Lumberjacks (4-0) never trailed and held the Golden Hurricane (4-2) to its lowest scoring output of the season, getting its fourth win in its last five tries against Conference USA teams under Danny Kaspar. It is also just the fourth 4-0 start for the `Jacks in the last 40 years of the program. SFA held the Golden Hurricane to just 31 percent shooting, including just 3 of 14 from the 3-point line, and forced 18 turnovers on the afternoon while committing just a dozen itself. Parker, playing near his hometown of Bixby, Okla., had a career day with 16 points and four rebounds while Smith just missed his second straight double-double, pulling down eight rebounds to go with his 17 points. Point guard Hal Bateman also had a big day, dishing out 10 assists with four steals and just two turnovers, along with a thunderous one-handed slam in the second half that quieted the Golden Hurricane crowd of 3,984. Thomas Walkup did not crack the scoring column, but did pull down eight of SFA s 34 rebounds as the `Jacks managed to outrebound TU 34-33, the 14th consecutive game in which SFA has outrebounded its opponent. Desmond Haymon added six points and a pair of rebounds and the Lumberjacks manged to dominate the paint with a 36-14 advantage, helping nullify just a 6-for-15 afternoon from the foul line. The `Jacks shot a solid 44 percent from the field and never trailed in the first half, getting five quick points from Smith before Parker hit consecutive three-pointers as part of his 10-point opening half. SFA forced 11 Tulsa turnovers and held the Golden Hurricane without a field goal from the 13:51 mark of the half until a short jumper from Zeldric King with 6:20 to go. 24 Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Stephen F. Smith finished with 14 points and seven rebounds and Bostic had 14 as well, including a pair of threes and 10 points in a key stretch in the first half that erased a double-digit Aggie lead. Hal Bateman had eight assists to go with five points and four rebounds, committing just two turnovers. In all SFA hit 39.7 percent from the floor and hit five three-point shots, but hit just 32 percent in the second half after hitting half of its shots in the opening period and never managed to gain the lead. Texas A&M shot 50 percent from the floor, but hit 21 of 29 shots from the foul line, compared to just three of six for the `Jacks. Ray Turner and J Mychal Reese each scored 15 points apiece to lead the Aggies to managed to avoid their first loss to SFA since the 1970-71 season. It took nearly three minutes of game time for either squad to crack the scoring column before SFA got six straight points from Smith to start things; however, the Aggies then held the `Jacks scoreless for nearly six minutes while going on a 13-0 run of its own and eventually building as much as a 12 point lead at 20-8 before SFA finally got something going. Austin Lumberjacks got a career-high 24 points from Desmond Haymon and hit beter than 59 percent from the floor, needing all the offense it could get to hold off a pesky Lubbock Christian squad, 78-67, on Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA (7-1) put four players in double figures, led by Haymon, who hit eight of his 10 shots from the field - including a career-best four from downtown - to go with five rebounds. Meanwhile, Taylor Smith also continued his run of solid play, going for 16 points, five rebounds and four blocks. In addition, Antonio Bostic added 12 and Jacob Parker 11 while Hal Bateman dished out six of SFA s 17 assists on the night. The `Jacks needed all of that offensive support to fend off the Chaparrals (6-5), whose 67 points were the most by any SFA opponent this season and the most by any visiting team in Johnson Coliseum in a non-overtime game since Texas Tech put up 70 in a win early in the 2010-11 season. LCU hit 49 percent of its shots from the floor, including 10 three-point buckets, while its reserves outscored the SFA subs 31-11. That was thanks in large part to a team-leading 20 points from Anthony Brancato, who managed to hit four of his seven three-point tries. SFA held as much as a nine-point lead in the first half before 13 consecutive points from the Chaps vaulted them out in front 28-24 with less than five minutes to play in the opening period. Despite hitting 58.3 percent of its shots in the first half, the `Jacks still had to put together a 10-0 run in the final 4:15 to manage to take a lead into the break. Parker erased LCU s largest lead of the night on consecutive possessions with a pair of buckets before Haymon added the final five points of the run, including a transition three-pointer from the left wing just before the halftime buzzer that put SFA up 35-30 after the opening 20 minutes. 26 Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Lubbock Christian vs Stephen F.
