Welcome to the Associate Publisher Nathalie Lavallée Risk Free! How Do You Set Your Pricing? Stop Guessing. We have the solution! competitors cost plus set yearly percentage draw from a hat Scientific algorithms that interface with your tee sheet pricing delivered automatically increase revenue Call us today! Let us show you how. 1 866 626 4262 I m not sure why I check the weather first thing every morning. I watch one of Canada s major national morning news shows and it always amazes me that the national weather reporter s version of the Ottawa weather is different than the local ticker at the bottom of the screen which is often different than what the local weather person says. This is all on the same channel heck, those three different weather reports are on the same show. The first report suggests I wear a sweater, the next report encourages me to cover myself from head-to-toe with sunscreen, and the last report recommends I bring an umbrella and take shelter due to severe storms. To top it all off, the radio station I listen to on my way to work has a slightly different view on the outcome of the day. No wonder it takes me so long to get dressed in the morning and our golfers are all confused about whether they should book a tee time or not! I understand that it would be near impossible for the local weather reporters to segment the weather conditions by neighbourhood, which is why we need to retrain our brains and those of our golfers, to stop relying on the meteorologists. Instead, we should focus our attention on The Weather Network s Report or apps such as Intellicast which provide you with a much more detailed picture of what is happening outside your exact location. On the sunnier side, our CEO, Jeff Calderwood has been working with The Weather Network for the past three years advocating for more accurate weather reporting. Among many great changes, they are now reporting the Probability of NO Precipitation which is presented before the POP data. Other recent changes include: 1 km by 1 km local forecasting making the forecast at your course more accurate Hours of sunshine expected Hourly and long-term forecasts Precipitation start and stop times Lightning detection notification systems (see story on page 16) Rain notifications and length of time rain will last Availability on mobile platforms The Weather Network has also committed to making the navigation of the Weather Report more user friendly and improving the accuracy of their weather icons (ie. isolated showers versus widespread rain). We re heading in the right direction but there s still work to do and we will continue to advocate on your behalf until the weather reporting is accurate and looks at the glass half full rather than half empty. We do realize, of The Sunny Side of Things course, that The Weather Network is also being lobbied by virtually all indoor activities that would prefer to keep the 20% chance of rain rather than 80% chance of sun. In the coming months, the NGCOA Canada will also develop a position statement on weather forecasting that will give our members a tool they can bring to their weather reporters when lobbying locally for more accurate weather reporting. The local lobbying efforts are an important factor in the overall success of any advocacy issue. Wishing you a 100% chance of sunny days for the remainder of the season and I look forward to seeing you all in Montreal in November for our annual Conference & Trade Show. Entertainment Expense Visit Your MP Today! Numbers That Count Ensure you NEVER get out-negotiated The National Allied Associations (NAGA) continues to advocate for tax fairness for Canada s $14 billion golf industry. Due to outdated 42-year old legislation, companies and business people are prohibited from claiming golf-related expenses on their taxes as an entertainment business expense. This is the case despite the 50 percent deduction that exists for other forms of client entertainment such as concerts, sporting events, theatre, etc. Due to a 1971 tax reform golf is singled out in the Income Tax Act. Given the growth and evolution of the industry over the past four decades this is no longer a tolerable competitive disadvantage for Canada s 2,300 golf course operators, the vast majority of which are small and medium sized businesses. We need your help to give us the best chance of success for the 2015 federal budget! NAGA leaders are working hard for their members; and now is the time for you to join this industry-wide effort. Meeting with an MP face-to-face is the most effective method of advocacy available, and now is the perfect time to reach out. MPs are always willing to meet with people from their riding. It only takes about 20 30 minutes of your time to meet with your MP to explain the issue and ask for their support. Visit NGCOA Canada s website at www.ngcoa.ca or NAGA s website at canadagolfs.ca to download NAGA s Grassroots Advocacy Tool Kit. This document describes in detail how to get in touch with your MP and discuss the need to establish tax fairness for Canada s golf industry. Many more rounds could be played at your course if this legislation gets changed, so let your voice be heard. Get involved and be an influencer of change for your industry. Contact your MP for a meeting today! Why purchase the 2013 Compensation & Benefits Report? They think it is $54,000 but you KNOW it is $48,000 any more questions? When negotiating with your staff, leave the guesswork to the othersand KNOW whether you are paying fairly and competitively. The Report includes: Salary, bonus, and commission numbers details on extended benefits; Data on professional development allocations; Information on recruitment and retention. Why not consider Get Ready? With the kids back in school, family holidays over, and routines reestablished; parents are finding themselves with some free time again.
