MEN S SWIMMING & DIVING 2007-2008 HEAD COACH DAVE FRITZ A 1994 Grove City College graduate, Dave Fritz is in his sixth season as Grove City College s head men s swimming and diving coach. Under his direction, Grove City has returned to the national spotlight as one of the nation s premier small-college programs. In 2006-07, two Grove City swimmers earned NCAA Division III championships as Tim Whitbeck won the national title in the 50 free and repeated as national champion in the 100 free. Their efforts helped Grove City place ninth nationally at the NCAA Championships, the program s best-ever finish at the Division III Championships. A total of seven Grove City swimmers have earned NCAA All-America honors during his tenure as head coach. In 2006, Courage became Grove City s first men s swimmer to earn a national title. Grove City placed 13th as a team at the NCAA Championships that season. Fritz has guided Grove City to a 42-13 overall dual-meet record, including a Collegerecord 15 victories during the 2006-07 season. In 2006-07, Grove City posted victories over eventual NCAA Division III champion Kenyon, perennial power Case Western Reserve, NCAA Division I institution Butler and archrival Westminster. In his second season as head coach, 2003-04, Fritz guided Grove City to the Presidents Athletic Conference championship, along with a 6-3 dual-meet record. He has helped Grove City extend its streak of consecutive winning seasons to 56. Fritz returned to his alma mater after seven successful seasons as the head boys swimming and diving coach at Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh. In that time, Fritz compiled a 67-24-1 (.734) record as the Colts head coach and also won a pair of section titles. He also coached 29 swimmers who qualified for the state championships. Fritz is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association and has served as a collegiate and scholastic water polo official. Fritz is also head coach of Grove City s women s water polo squads. In the spring of 2002, Fritz directed the women s team to a 7-11 mark after taking over on an interim basis. In 2007, Fritz led the women s water polo team to a program-record 18 victories and a fifth-place finish at the Collegiate III National Championships. Four Grove City players have earned All-America honors under his guidance. He owns master s degrees from both Duquesne University and Slippery Rock University. Fritz lives in Slippery Rock with his wife Tammy, daughters Emily and Mary, and son Hayden. DIVIN IVING COACH TAMMY FRITZ Tammy Fritz is in her fifth season as the diving coach at Grove City College. Grove City s diving corps has ascended to its place among the region s elite under Fritz s guidance. COACHING STAFF In 2007, Fritz helped junior Joe Riddell provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. Riddell and freshman Kyle Grubbs placed 1-2 in both diving events at the Presidents Athletic Conference Championships. Two years earlier, she helped guide five Grove City divers to top-five finishes at the Presidents Athletic Conference Championships, including two-time women s 3-meter champion Emily Hays. Prior to joining the Grove City staff, Fritz worked as the diving coach at Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Pa. for two seasons. Fritz also has 14 years of experience coaching gymnastics at various age levels. She has guided numerous athletes to state championships. Fritz is in her fifth year as an English teacher at Grove City High School. She also taught English for eight years at Chartiers Valley. Fritz graduated from Washington and Jefferson in 1992. In July 2002, she completed her master s degree in education from Duquesne University. She lives in nearby Slippery Rock with her husband, Dave, daughters Emily and Mary and son Hayden. 3

MEN S SWIMMING & DIVING 2007-2008 SEASON PREVIEW With four returning NCAA All-Americans and 12 other talented lettermen back, the Grove City College men s swimming and diving team is poised to reclaim the Presidents Athletic Conference championship and solidify its place among the nation s elite Division III programs. In 2006-07, Grove City recorded a Collegerecord 15 dual-meet wins and finished ninth in the team standings at the NCAA Division III Championships. Six swimmers earned All-America honors, including a pair of national champions. Junior sprinter Tim Whitbeck headlines the quartet of returning All-Americans. Whitbeck is the defending NCAA Division III champion in the 50 freestyle and is a six-time All-American. Also back is junior Drew Snyder, a five-time NCAA All-American. Snyder joins Whitbeck in the sprint events after having been a key contributor in the 100 and 200 free during each of his first two seasons. Junior Peter Larsen is also back after earning All-America in the 400 free relay last season. He is one of Grove City s top returning performers in the butterfly and will also compete in the individual medley. Sophomore distance standout Chip Cressman returns after a strong debut in 2006-07. Cressman joined Snyder and Larsen on the 400 free relay team that earned NCAA All-America honors last season. Cressman also set new Grove City records in the 500, 1000 and 1650 during his freshman season. He will also be counted on in the 400 IM. Grove City also features a five-man senior class that provides depth and flexibility throughout the lineup. Senior diver Joe Riddell provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships last year and is a two-time defending PAC champion. Senior Nick Barker joins Larsen in the butterfly events. Barker earned All-PAC in the 200 butterfly last season and will be a team co-captain this year. Versatile senior Albert Cheung will is a threeyear letterman in the breaststroke and individual medley. He has also competed in the sprints during his career. Cheung joins Barker as a team cocaptain this winter. Distance ace Jeremy Harbaugh is another threeyear letterman who will make significant contributions in all three distance events. Harbaugh ranks among the program s top 10 in both the 1000 and 1650. Senior breaststroker Tyler May is also back after three solid seasons at Grove City. May will bolster Grove City in the breaststroke, along with the 400 IM. In 2006-07, May lowered his personal best time in the 400 IM by eight seconds. Junior Peter Larsen is a returning All-American for Grove City. Larsen will bolster Grove City in both the butterfly and individual medley this year. Four additional juniors join Larsen, Snyder and Whitbeck. Butterflier Nate Brunk earned his first letter in 2006-07 and will likely be a key contributor in the butterfly and IM races this winter. Junior Caleb Kramer is also a returning letterman in the distance events while classmate Ben Leach will once again compete in the breaststroke for Grove City. Like Kramer, Leach earned his first letter last season. Junior backstroker Chad Toth lettered as a freshman in 2005-06 but missed much of last season due to injury. He is Grove City s most experienced backstroker. Including Cressman, three other current sophomores lettered as rookies in 2006-07. Versatile Richard Albertson competed in both the backstroke and butterfly events last year. He will likely be used in a variety of roles again this season. Sophomore Lincoln Larsen returns after lettering in the breaststroke events. The younger brother of junior Peter Larsen, Lincoln Larsen could also see action in the individual medley. Sophomore diver Kyle Grubbs made an immediate impact as a freshman, earning All-PAC Second Team in both 1- and 3-meter diving. Grubbs could join Riddell as an NCAA qualifier this year. Several other sophomores are expected to contribute this season, including breaststroker Andrew Ashleigh, distance performer Matt Green, backstroker Tucker Gregg, diver Arne Ulbrich and sprinter Seth Zimmerman. A dozen freshmen have also joined the program. Several are expected to make immediate contributions to the Grove City program this year. SEASON PREVIEW 5

2006-07 REVIEW 2006-07 7 S It is safe to say that the 2006-07 season will go down in history as one of the most successful in Grove City College men s swimming and diving history. The list of accomplishments from that historical season is exhaustive: -Two NCAA Division III national champions -Six NCAA Division III All-Americans -A 9th-place national finish -A College-record 15 dual-meet victories -The program s 500th all-time dual meet win -Victories over NCAA Division III national champion Kenyon, NCAA Division II member Gannon and NCAA Division I program Butler (Ind.) -The team s 56th straight winning season. Grove City capped that historical season at the NCAA Division III Championships in Houston March 15-17, 2007 as two Wolverine swimmers won national titles. Junior successfully defended his NCAA title in the 100 free while sophomore Tim Whitbeck won the national title in the 50 free. The road to a top 10 national finish began October 20-21 as Grove City opened the season by winning the Clarion Classic. The Wolverines then opened the dual-meet portion of the season with a 132-108 victory over NCAA Division I member Butler (Ind.) at Youngstown State University. Senior Andrew Gilbert swept the breaststroke events while Courage won both the 100 and 200 free. Both Courage and Gilbert helped Grove City capture the 200 medley relay. Eight days later, host Carnegie Mellon handed the Wolverines their lone defeat of the season, a 168-128 setback in Pittsburgh. Grove City won seven of 14 events, including five of six freestyle races. Junior Joe Riddell, a provisional NCAA qualifier, won 1-meter diving while Courage again won the 100 and 200 free. Grove City improved to 3-1 Nov. 17 by sweeping a home double-dual with Frostburg State and Saint Vincent. MEN S SWIMMING & DIVING 2007-2008 Few swimming and diving programs can match the tradition of excellence that has developed at Grove City College since the program s 1937 inception. With 51 all-time NCAA All-Americans, five national champions, 507 victories and 56 straight winning seasons, one can see that success is a way of life at Grove City. Yet, numbers alone do not tell the story of the Grove City men s swimming and diving program. The program has grown from humble beginnings into one of the nation s finest of the past 70 years. Intercollegiate swimming and diving at Grove City College began during the 1937-38 academic year. During the program s first five seasons, Grove City managed just eight total wins. World War II interrupted the program for four seasons but Grove City continued to gain traction. In 1950, the Wolverines went 5-6. Two years later, head coach Jim Loveless led Grove City to its first winning season with a 6-4 mark. That season began Grove City s current run of 56 straight winning seasons. Loveless coached the team until 1954, when Russ Weider took over. In his one season as head coach, Weider led Grove City to a 9-1 record and the school s first Penn-Ohio championship. Philip Sedgley coached the team to an 18-2 mark and two Penn-Ohio runner-up finishes from 1955-57. Following that season, Grove City hired a coach who would make an immeasurable impact on the swimming and diving program: Jim Longnecker. SWIMMING Ubbo Van der Valk, 60 (1985) Earl Mays, 63 (1985) William McGarry, 66 (1985) James Livermore, 65 (1987) William Skip Arbuckle, 71 (1987) Dan Reid, 71 (1987) William Griffith, 67 (1989) Richard Jewell, 67 (1989) Richard Durstein, 77 (1989) Christopher Van De Mark, 82 (1991) Dan Young, 83 (1991) PROGRAM HIS ISTOR ORY WIMMING & D In Longnecker s first year as head coach, 1957-58, the Wolverines went 6-5. That season, the program produced the first of its 51 all-time All- Americans as Ubbo van der Valk produced the eighth-fastest time in the nation in the 100-yard breaststroke. By 1962, Grove City emerged as the region s preeminent program as the Wolverines went 12-0 and won the Penn-Ohio meet. That season began a run of seven straight league titles for Grove City. In 1964, Grove City hosted the first-ever NCAA College Division Swimming and Diving Championships. Grove City placed ninth in that inaugural meet. Unfortunately, it would be the last time Grove City participated in the national championships for some time. Following that year, the College banned its teams from participating in postseason competition. Despte a 33-9 dual-meet record and four Penn-Ohio titles over the next four years, Grove City did not compete in the national meet, preventing several standouts from earning NCAA All-America honors. Grove City returned to the NCAA Championships in 1969, finishing 36th nationally. In 1975, after a 12-1 dual-meet record, Grove City took 13th at the inaugural Division III Championships. It was the first of five top-20 national finishes for Grove City in the 1970s. Six years later, Grove City produced its first national champion as diver Chris Van De Mark swept both the 1- and 3-meter diving titles at the 1981 NCAA meet. & DIVING HALL OF FAME Clark Johnson, 84 (1991) James Drummond, 75 (1993) David Tomashewski, 78 (1993) Marty Wurl, 78 (1993) David Campbell, 62 (1994) Mike Monahan, 64 (1994) Scott Clausen, 65 (1994) Thurlow Turtle Mayhood, 50 (2000) William May, 53 (2000) Phillip Van Sickle, 78 (2000) Randy Galm, 81 (2000) In 1982, Van De Mark successfully defended his 1-meter title and earned runner-up in 3-meter diving after helping the team to a 12-0 dualmeet mark. The next year, Dan Young won the NCAA 1-meter diving title while in 1984, Clark Johnson captured the 3-meter diving national title. Grove City began competition in the Presidents Athletic Conference in 1984-85 and quickly emerged as the league s dominant program by winning eight of 11 PAC titles. The Wolverines went 10-0 in 1986-87, then assembled 40 straight victories from 1993-96. Grove City went undefeated in 1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96. In Longnecker s final season, 1996-97, Grove City went 10-2. Longnecker (right) retired after 40 seasons with 366 wins, 44 All- Americans and 15 league titles to his credit. Following the 1997 season, 1983 Grove City grad Keith Bullion took over as head coach. During Bullion s five-years as head coach, Grove City won three PAC titles and went 33-17 overall. A new era began in 2002 as 1994 alum Dave Fritz replaced Bullion. In 2006, became Grove City s first men s swimming national champion as he won the NCAA title in the 100 free. In 2007, Courage defended his national title while teammate Tim Whitbeck won the NCAA title in the 50 free. The Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame was initiated in 1985 as a means of honoring those athletes who have displayed a level of excellence worthy of such recognition. These indiviudals have shown commitment to the program and were identified by their teammates and predecessors as exemplary athletes and sportsmen. GROVE CITY COLLEGE ABOUT THE PRESIDENTS ATHLETIC CONFERENCE ABOUT THE PAC Founded in 1955, the Presidents Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg College and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham University, Geneva College and Saint Vincent College all joined the PAC. Chatham will compete for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. Geneva and Saint Vincent are playing full conference schedules during their time as provisional members of NCAA Division III. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. All-Conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-pac accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. GROVE CITY COLLEGE ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE ABOUT THE COLLEGE The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 27 neo-gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The big business school curriculum prepares students for today s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each freshman receives a notebook computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. Grove City College s Breen Student Union This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum. The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men s and women s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport. MEN S SWIMMING & DIVING 2007-2008 THE GROVE CIT ITY COLLEGE POOL The Grove City College Competitive Pool is one of the nation s top small-college aquatic facilities. The 8-lane facility is regarded as one of the fastest pools in the region and is reserved solely for use by the College s swimming and diving and water polo athletes. The Grove City College Pool features two one-meter diving boards and one three-meter board as well as four Power Rack stations. An eight-lane electronic Colorado Timing System is integrated into the pool and scoreboard. The scoreboard features eight lines for results, three lines for event/heat and scoring and a scrolling line that shows laneby-lane results. The shallow end of the Pool is seven feet; thus the Grove City College Pool is able to host several Collegiate Water Polo Association events that are restricted from shallow-deep pools. Since 2000, Grove City College has hosted several CWPA championship events. The Grove City College Pool is 25 yards in length and 56 feet wide. It holds 408,913 gallons of water. The seating capacity of the Pool area is approximately 400. The Pool has been home to the Presidents Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships since 1990.
