Mission Statement: The Court Appointed Special Advocate programs recruit, train, and supervise competent volunteers dedicated to representing the needs of abused and neglected children in juvenile court. The programs promote safe, permanent homes for all children and seek to educate the community concerning the needs of abused and neglected children. Since 1994, Henrico CASA and Chesterfield CASA have trained and supervised hundreds of Court appointed Special Advocate volunteers to promote safe, permanent homes for more than 4,000 abused and neglected children in our local community. These children found themselves in front of a judge not because they had committed any crime but because their parents could not or would not care for them. Fortunately, each child had the benefit of their CASA volunteer who made independent and informed recommendations about what services and living arrangements would be in the child s best interests. The Power of the CASA Volunteer Program Staff. Volunteers (186 in FY16) = = Children Served (559 in FY16) = 10 people CASA by the Numbers (July 2015 June 2016) Total children served 559 Total volunteers assigned 186 New volunteers trained & activated 50 Hours donated volunteers 15,693 % of recommendations approved by the Courts 97% % of children experiencing re-abuse <1% Value of volunteer time donated $409,430 The lawyers know the statutes, the social workers the regulations. But the CASA volunteer is assigned to know the child, one child at a time, to understand the boundaries of her life, to telephone her teachers, to consider her hopes and dreams, to try to come to some conclusion about what will be in her best interests. For children whose pasts have been chaotic and whose futures are uncertain, the CASA volunteer may be the most consistent, interested presence in their lives.
