From the Course: Winter is fast approaching and the golf course is already starting to change. The roughs will be going first, followed by the tees and fairways, and then finally the greens. The reason for this is directly related to the height of cut. The shorter the turf, the easier it is for the sun to warm the soil directly and extend the period of active growth. We have adjusted the height of cut in the fairways raising them for winter and this will take us through to next spring when they will be lowered again for next seasons play. The greens are handled differently as we currently have just begun the process of adjusting the greens height for this winter, raising them slightly. It is my intent to provide the best green speeds possible as we forecast how much to raise them and when. A close eye is being kept on daily temperatures, as this dictates the process. Most everyone says they enjoy fast greens, as do I, but keeping them playable and fair will be the priority. Once Champion greens go dormant, there is a drastic increase in seed, and any adjustments must be made prior. Once they are dormant, there is o going back, because the turf has ceased to grow. The challenge is to regulate the speed leading up to dormancy. Projects scheduled for this winter are proceeding nicely. In the coming weeks we will be concentrating on the marshes, pruning trees, and working on bunkers and cart paths. Although we are not mowing as frequently, my staff and I will remain busy through the winter months. I would encourage everyone who can, to participate in our monthly workdays. The projects accomplished really make a difference on the course. Anyone interested in volunteering, or if you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me directly at 678-570-1888. Your continued support is appreciated, and I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming holidays. Chris Hankey Director of Golf Course Operations
