Anibal Sanchez recorded his first quality start of the season, but took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits, striking out five and walking one in 6.1 innings. Torii Hunter had two hits with a run scored and a double to lead the Detroit offense. Alex Avila drove in the Tigers only run of the game and went 1x4 with a double. The Tigers play game two of their four-game series against the White Sox tonight. THE NEED FOR SPEED: The Tigers led the majors with 33 stolen bases during Spring Training and have continued their thievery in the regular season, stealing 16 bases, which ranks third among American League teams. The Tigers 16 stolen bases in the month of April is tied for 10th most in franchise history and is the most in the month of April since the 1999 team swiped 21 bases. RAJAI RACKING UP THE STOLEN BASES: Rajai Davis has been one of the top stolen base threats in the American League in recent years and he s continued that in 2014. Davis currently ranks fourth in the American League with seven stolen bases. His seven steals in the month of April are tied for the eighth most in club history and are the most in April since Juan Encarnacion also stole seven bases in 1999. MULTI-HIT TORII: Torii Hunter collected his fourth multi-hit game of the season last night vs. the White Sox, finishing the game 2x4 with a double and run scored. Since the beginning of the 2013 season, Hunter ranks sixth in the American League with 60 multi-hit games. START ME UP: The Tigers starting pitchers have gotten off to a strong start in 2014. Through the first 16 games of the season, the Tigers starting rotation has a 2.99 ERA (96.1IP/32ER), which ranks second in the American League and an opponent batting average of.233, which is third among American League teams. The Tigers have received a quality start in nine of 16 games this season. FIVE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: Scoring five runs in a game has been a good indicator of success for the Tigers so far this season. When scoring five-or-more runs in a game, the Tigers are 6-1. Conversely, when scoring four-or-less runs, the Tigers have a 3-6 record. WINNING THE CLOSE ONES: After going 20-26 in one-run games last season, the Tigers have fared better in close games so far in 2014, winning five of the seven one-run games the team has played. The Tigers five one-run victories ranks second among American League teams. REED CONTINUES SCORELESS STREAK: Evan Reed tossed 1.1 shutout innings in last night s game vs. Chicago to extend his season-opening scoreless streak to 7.1 innings. During that stretch, Reed has allowed five hits, struck out five and walked one. MARTINEZ ON THE MARK VS. CHICAGO: Victor Martinez enters tonight s game hitting.328 (173x528) with 30 doubles, 22 home runs and 89 RBI in 146 career games against the White Sox. He ranks second among active players in the American League with 173 hits, while he is third with 89 RBI and fourth with a.328 batting average during his career against the White Sox. Martinez has at least one base hit in each of his last 11 games vs. the White Sox. RECENT SUCCESS VS. THE WHITE SOX: The Tigers enter tonight s game having won 21 of the club s last 31 games over Chicago, dating back to May 15, 2012. The Tigers have outscored the White Sox 152-121 during the stretch. V-MART NEARING 1,500 HITS: Victor Martinez enters tonight s game vs. the White Sox nearing 1,500 career hits. Martinez currently has 1,497 hits, only three shy of reaching the 1,500 mark.
