CTIVITY SHOT PUT MIDDLE SCHOOL Prep 1 spot marker per student (for circles) 1 softball per 2 students 1 beanbag per 2 students Shot Put Skill Card (SPRKfamily.org) Set Create medium circle (20 paces diameter). Create 2 nd circle 30 paces outside the 1 st. 20 PCES Form pairs; Partner with ball on inner circle and Partner with beanbag on outer circle in face-off formation. Teach 1. Today you will learn and practice proper technique for the Shot Put. Shot put is a field event and is often called a "throw." However, the shot is a heavy lead ball and is put not thrown. Throwing a shot could injure your shoulder or elbow, so it s important to learn and practice proper technique. (If available, allow students to feel a shot.) You will use a softball instead of a real shot. 2. Shot Put Technique (Demonstrate the shot put.) Place ball on the base of your fingers just below your ear. Crouch low with your non-putting side to target, putting elbow up. Extend your off (non-putting) arm out and up in front of you. Draw back your off hand as you extend your body up and out, extending your ball-arm and releasing the ball up and out. Keep elbow level with and behind ball. On Put, those on the inner circle shot put their ball toward their partner. On Mark partners place beanbag where ball hit ground, then roll it back to partner. Do not count it if ball was thrown and not put. (e sure marking partners are a safe distance away. Continue throwing on signal for 6-8 minutes, then switch roles.) 3. Side-Slide and Shot Put (Demonstrate the side-slide shot put.) Turn your side to your partner with ball held below your ear. Do 2 side-slides for momentum and then shot put the ball. I will use the same signals as before. (e sure marking partners are a safe distance away. Continue for 4-5 minutes then switch roles.) 4. Think bout How do you think you could generate more power for putting the shot? (During the full glide technique, you face away from the target, crouch low and explosively transfer all of your energy to the shot as you put it.) 30 PCES 15 TRCK ND FIELD

SHOT PUT EXTENSIONS Put and Run (Form pairs behind sideline, each with a ball. Cones mark the put line ~ 30 paces away.) On Put, you and your partner put the ball as far as you can toward the opposite line. On Run, retrieve balls, then go around sideline, return. Full Glide Technique Use full glide technique to add distance. Cues: Crouch low and face away from throwing area, glide on 1 foot backwards, turn to the throwing area and follow the rest of the technique you ve learned. n excellent shot put performance calls for a lot of muscular strength. Muscular strength is the amount of force that can be produced with 1 maximum effort. It can be improved by regular participation in weight lifting or other resistance training. Pump up your shot put performance potential by pumping iron powerfully! NSPE #1, 2 Throwing, analyzing and correcting movement errors #3, 4 Participation in physical activity, conditioning application #5, 6 Self-responsibility, accepting challenges, cooperation Your State (Write in here) For safety reasons, do not use real shots. Use softballs or a slightly larger ball for this activity. Emphasize awareness of others at all times. larger ball (e.g., basketball) will help prevent students from throwing the ball. NOTES 16

CTIVITY SPRINTS ND SPRINT STRTS MIDDLE SCHOOL Prep 50 PCES 4 cones (for start and finish lines) 20 spot markers (for start and finish lines) 1 stopwatch 1 Peer Coaching: Sprinting Task Card per 2 students (optional) Set Create large (50 paces X 50 yards) activity area using cones. Spread half of the spots on each 50 pace line to mark start and finish lines. rrange students on start line. Teach 1. Today you will learn and practice proper technique for Sprints and Sprint Starts. 2. Sprint Technique Start cues for track events are On your mark. Get set. Go! On, Go! push off and run as fast as you can. Keep head forward. rms bent 90, swinging front-to-back (not across the body). Sprint through the finish line. Do not slow down until you are past the line. When everyone has crossed, jog slowly back to the starting line. (llow runners to practice 4-5 sprints using the official start cues.) 3. Racing Sprint Start (Demonstrate the racing sprint start.) On, On your mark, place hands just behind the starting line. Thumbs point in toward each other and fingers point away. Push or kick with your non-dominant leg. Place it in front. Crouch down so that the knee of your rear leg is even with the middle of your front foot. Rear knee touches the ground. On, Get set, lift hips and shift weight forward. Lift head, focus eyes down the track. On, Go! push off, keeping low and leaning forward. Gradually stand upright. (Practice 8-10 sprint starts. llow 5-10 seconds of sprinting. Jog slowly back, repeat.) 4. 50-Yard Dash (rrange students along start line in file lines of 4-5.) First runner in each line, move to start line, use cues to get ready. On, Go! run hard to the finish. Stay in your lane, keeping eyes on the finish line. fter each dash, jog outside our area and back to start line. Get ready to run again. (llow runners to practice 4-5 50-yard dashes. Provide feedback on technique.) 5. Think bout Why is it important to begin sprints low and forward instead of standing up quickly? re there track and field events where you want to go up instead of forward? 50 YRDS 5 TRCK ND FIELD

SPRINTS ND SPRINT STRTS EXTENSIONS Peer Coaching Sprints Partner calls the start commands, observes and marks Partner for sprinting cues listed on the Peer Coaching: Sprinting Task Card. fter 5 trials, switch roles. When both have practiced, answer questions on the Task Card. Peer Coaching Plus (Follow extension above.) fter answering questions, draw a diagram together to show proper sprint start technique on the back of the Task Card. Sprinting is great on the track, but not in the school hallways. Starting your day without breakfast is also very inappropriate. Eating breakfast improves your ability to focus (even in the most boring locations) and helps you control your hunger throughout the day. It s sort of like sprinting, they do call it breakfast. NSPE #1, 2 Running, biomechanics of sprinting #3 Participation in physical activity #5, 6 Self-responsibility, accepting challenges Your State (Write in here) llow no more than 5 to each file line. Stand at the finish line and call times as students cross. Start next race immediately after calling final runner s time. NOTES 6

LET THE GMES EGIN! Suggested Event Options (Duration 2 classes.) In this Event there are several activity options to choose from. Free choice will allow students the opportunity to select challenges that fit their skill level. MIDDLE SCHOOL TRCK ND FIELD Day 1 Options Track Events. Students choose 2 track events. (50-Yard Dash; 100-Meter Hurdles; 4 X 400-Meter Relay; 800-Meter Run) Day 2 Options Field Events. Students choose 2 field events. (Long Jump; Triple Jump; Shot Put; Disc Throw) Global Connection Let the games begin! is the traditional way for a country s head of state to declare the opening to the Olympics. Our event this month will be a mini- Olympics in the sport of Track and Field. The ancient Greeks were the first to turn running, jumping, and throwing activities into sporting competitions with the ancient Olympic Games which began in 776 C in Olympia, Greece. What began as a single running race then expanded to include other activities including long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, and wrestling. Track and field spread from Greece to Rome and new events began to emerge and evolve as they migrated throughout Europe. The Celts added early shot put and hammer throw events during the Middle ges, and in the 18 th century, pole vaulting had developed into its own event. Modern track meets include 3 categories of events: track (running), field (throwing and jumping), and combined events. Combined events involve athletes completing 10 (the decathlon for men), or 7 (the heptathlon for women) different events. Decathletes complete 100-, 400-, and 1500-meter runs; 110-meter hurdles; long and high jumps; pole vaulting; and shot put, discus and javelin throws. Heptathletes complete 200- and 800-meter runs; 100-meter hurdles; long and high jumps; shot put; and javelin throw. Traditionally, the winners of these Olympic events are crowned World s Greatest Male and Female thletes. Who will be the school s greatest athletes? Good luck and let the games begin! ulletin oard asics Get students excited for this event with an Olympic Track and Field ulletin oard. Here are the basic components to get you started.
