WESTERN OHIOWALLEYE NEWS MAY 2008 e-mail: saugeyemarc@aol.com 1998-2008 CONGRATULATION TO THE TEAM OF LARRYWOOTEN AND LENNY WOOTEN WINNERS OF THE TENTH ANNIVERERY C.J. BROWN RES WOWC OPENER John Clark President. Marc Colwell Publisher and Editor. Mad Ghost Angler Contributing Writer. 1

Congratulations to the Team of Wooten and Wooten on a win of the hardest tournament weekend we ve seen in a few years. Congrats to all who caught fish at C.J. Brown. Honors go out to those who braved the weather Saturday morning to pre-fish under heavy rains and high winds that came with the cold front. Several of us quit at 1pm and when we had our boats out of the water the sun comes out. If you wonder what happened to the Walleye Sunday I have a possible answer in hindsight. If you looked at the shore when you came in you saw hundreds of shad spawning along the banks. I m not 100% percent sure but I suspect the walleyes went to the banks to feed on these shad. I didn t see anyone fishing Bass style but I think that might have gotten some fish. This shad run is a couple of weeks late this year and the combination of that with a cold front sure killed the bite. But it feels good to see the determination of our competitors looking for one bite and fishing hard to the end for it. I have a tip for those who want to reduce the fuel cost for their boats during the high prices. Instead of running full bore across the lake reducing to ¾ speed will save you more than a tank a year. You might want to pay your kids a buck a dozen to go out and catch worms for you now. Put them in a large container of good potting soil and add wet newspaper on top. If your better half allows keep the container in the fridge, or in a cool basement. Change the newspaper every couple of weeks. As fuel prices go up so does the price of everything else except pay wages. If you have any tips for our competitors e-mail them my way. Hopefully the weather will cooperate better at Tappen. During the pre-fishing at C.J. it was hard enough just controlling the boat and I don t take cameras into the rain. But weather permitting I d like to get some photos the day before so keep a good fish in your livewell and wave me down. I promise not to mark your spot in my GPS. I ll even give you a moment to hide the lures you re using. If you want I ll keep a distance from your boat. I have telephoto capabilities. But I d like to start getting some quality photos not only for the newsletter but to start getting our club members photos in national magazines. If you have a tournament shirt or just a decent button down shirt pact it with you. It time this club gets a little more recognition and I think this might make a good start. For those who didn t get enough abuse at C.J. Brown or like me want a rematch the Boat house is having their 3 rd Annual Walleye Tournament on Sunday June 1 st. For those who fished last year this year promises to be even better. Cash and prizes were given out through 15 places last year. Rods, Reels, cordless fillet knives and all types of tackle and on top was a great buffet. Jay and his crew started planning this event immediately after the finish of the last one. Looking forward to seeing you there. Still waiting for you to send photos from past fishing trips. Let s see some of the pigs this club has caught. Rants and Raving of the Mad Ghost Angler. First I d like to thank Dan Johnson for tolerating me on a very successful Lake Erie fishing trip. Many big eyes (and they are getting bigger as the fillets sit in my freezer) were brought to the boat. Thanks Manure: In the 16 th and 17 th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before commercial fertilizer s invention, so large shipments of manure were common. It was shipped dry because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but also the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could and did happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure wee always stamped with the term Ship High In Transit on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Thus evolved the term S.H.I.T. (Ship High In Transit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. Now that you ve had your school lesson for the day let look at some tips to save you money. Dawn Dishwashing liquid. A few drops in your dog s bath will kill fleas. If that same dog come in smelling of dog after being out in the rain. Rub them down with Bounce or any drier sheet. The dog will smell good the house smells good. Win Win. Don t like pills? Two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-without the side effects caused by traditional pain relievers. Colgate Toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns. Achy muscles? Mix 1 tablespoon horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as massage oil for instant relief for aching muscles. Two tablets of Alka-Seltzer in a glass of water will eliminate urinary tract infection almost instantly. Sore throat? Just mix ¼ cup each of Vinegar and Honey. And take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria. Next time you get a splinter pour a drop of Elmer s glue on it Once dry peel away. The splinter sticks to the glue. When I get up in the morning and my hands are stiff and sore I mix 2 extra cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to my hands for soothing relief. 3

Presidents Corner I would like to start this newsletter off by saying congratulations to Lenny and Larry Wooten on their victory at our first tournament which was held at C.J.Brown Reservoir. This was a very tough tournament with only seven out of twenty two team that caught fish. Larry and Lenny caught their 7.5 lbs of walleye trolling the roadbed that runs north and south straight out from the boat ramp. All of their fish were caught trolling spinner night crawler rigs. The team of Marie Chamberlin and Jason Walls took second place with 6.36 lbs. Jason said all of their fish were caught using roadrunner jig with a piece of crawler fishing the same roadbed. From what I heard 90% of the fish came off the same roadbed area. This was a tough tournament with pouring down rain and 30 mph winds on Saturday prefishing and sunny bluebird sky s and the lake calm flat. I would also like to thank everyone for wearing their lifejackets and staying safe. I would also like to thank everyone for bringing in their boat number. I know everyone thought I was crazy when I said it would cost you $20 if you didn t turn in your boat number, but it worked because we received back every boat number that we handed out. I truly believe that if I didn t place a $20 bounty per boat number someone would still have their number in their boat right now. Our next tournament is a Tappan Lake June 22 at the boat ramp down by the Dam. Cripple Creek bait shop is a great place to get information on the bite and Jim has the best selection of lures and live bait in the area. When you stop in thank him for being one of our club sponsors, and helping our club grow. If you are receiving this newsletter thru e-mail, I will not send out a copy in the mail. A lot of members are taking advantage of getting the newsletter thru e-mail. Here are some of the advantages of e- mail newsletters, you can print it in color for yourself or sponsors, we are adding more articles and pictures, and it saves the club the cost of stamps, printing, and me a day of stuffing envelopes. If you have the ability to get the newsletter thru e-mail please e-mail saugeyemarc@aol.com so that he can get you on the list. Please send Marc your name with your e-mail so we know who you are. I know everyone doesn t have a computer or a way to receive to e-mails not to worry I m still mailing them out to members that can t get it e-mail style. I know I talked about this after to tournament and the possibility of increasing membership dues NEXT YEAR, for those that can t get this in an e-mail. One example I would like to point out is the members that get the e-mail newsletter received the results within a few days. This is a big plus for those of you that want the results quicker. If you have any concerns or commits please call me at 937-361-3799 Top right is world class Piranha Left is the New Canada Northern Pike record caught on Rainy Lake. Take a good look at my tackle boxes and you ll notice something slightly unusual compared to most others. You can spot mine in the dark. Matter of fact if you let mine set outside a couple of hours and put them in a dark garage, you ll be able to see almost as well as if you d turned a light on. The reason is the newer phosphorescent super glow powders and paints on the market. Some of these glow up to 12 hours on a single charge. And I tend to add a touch of glow to most of them. We ve all heard over the years that adding scent can help but sure can t hurt. The same theory applies when it come to adding glow to your lures. Most lure manufacturers have one or two products with glow on them. Several have seen what they can do and offer many different versions with glow included. Northland and Lindy offer jigs in several different glowing colors. Reef Runner has a wide selection of crankbaits with glow built in VIB E and Mack s both have glow products on the market... I like adding glow towards the tail to give off tracers like a fin moving in the water. Glow on the belly is great when fishing for suspended fish, and nothing shows up in muddy or heavy discolored water like glowing bait. During the first GNWC Ohio event in 2005 at Mosquito Lake Kevin Vernon put on a show using a Northland Rattle Jig that had been doctored the night before with a super glow powder found on E-Bay. Four similar baits were being pitched into the same area by our two boats but the ones with the glow dominated when it came to putting walleyes in the boat. For doctoring bait I use powder more than paint. I can super concentrate it as heavy or light as I want. I like making dots or stripes using powder mixed with epoxy glue, on my cranks, spoons or the eyes of a jig. Then you can be done or you can add a protective layer of lacquer finish. The lacquer finish will often leave a rotten egg smell to the lure the next few days. Fish are drawn to this smell for some reason we haven t figured out yet, but they do. We all know that vibration or sound will attract the fish but in discolored water the light thrown off the glow gives them a target sooner and accounts for more reaction time for the fish. Next time you re fishing a windblown mudline try tossing glowing bait. This is one place you have near misses. With the glow throwing out a light the fish have that extra split second to make sure they get their food in the mouth. They are in there feeding on confused bait and the longer they can see the prey the better. More times than I can count a glow bead or blade on a spinner / crawler combo turned out to save the day, especially when fishing bottom bouncers in deep water. Something about a little bit of glowing color traveling through the water give walleyes a target to aim for and seems to result in more hook-ups. There isn t a lure out there that couldn t benefit with a little glowing power. If you haven t been experimenting by adding glow to your arsenal then you re missing out on what could improve the amount of bites you get in an outing. Lowlight periods, the dark of night, overcast days, deep water, muddy water and occasionally gin clear water are all places that a little glow could make your day. Like I said, it can help and it couldn t hurt. 5

You got to love the modern age. The world of computers if nothing else has brought us closer through access to more information than ever, and it gets better all the time. Need to find a lost friend, Google them. Looking for a present for someone special, surf the web. Looking for more info on Walleye fishing or those lures you have in your box it s all a keystroke away. Mack s Lure now has a newsletter the Mack Attack. Go to www.mackslure.com and sign up. When you go to the website check out the archives and you ll see the quality of stories and information on their lures and techniques used fishing them. I guarantee you ll smack your head and say I should of thought of that more than once. Speaking of Mack s Lure, its trolling season once again and to use a famous quote Got Hot Wings? Talk about turning a smoking gun into and full fledge military arsenal. Just by adding a Hot Wing a few feet ahead of your crank bait, spinnerbait or bladebait when trolling gives you an edge. Now instead of a single baitfish swimming, you have created an illusion of a school of bait cruising through the water. The flash and vibration help to bring those pigs to your bait. It s just amazing how many times my catch ratio has increased from using Hot Wings. I always start using half the rods with and half without Hot Wings and sometimes just can t believe how well they work. I know that I m not the only one who has had pull backs in my board but no fish was there when I picked up the rod. At first I thought the Hot Wings had picked up a weed or small stick and when I picked up the rod the weed fell off. Then one day I was having several of these pull backs and thought maybe just maybe the fish were hitting the Hot Wing. So I added a short shank #8 hook to both ends. I don t half to tell you the results, you can guess what happened next. I ve even had a few doubles over the past couple of years. How many times have you been bringing in a fish and seen several others follow up to the boat. One of my doubles became so when I had the first one reeled within 10 feet of the boat. There s very little more exciting than having your pull double all the sudden. Another tidbit you may be interested in. Say you re cranking and you want your bait banging the bottom. You can still run a Hot Wing just run it 6-10 feet ahead of the lure. This will keep the Hot Wings working off the bottom and allows for working two depths simultaneously. Again add hooks to both ends of the rig. Hot Wings aren t just for targeting suspended fish anymore. Once again check out www.mackslure.com for more info on how to increase your catch rate. 7
