January 25-29, 2016 School District of Palm Beach County District-Wide Activity Monday, January 25 Top Secret Book - In partnership with Lawyers for Literacy, our elementary schools will be participating in a Top Secret Book activity. Through Vodcast presentations, our Superintendent, Dr. Avossa, will share a clue about the Top Secret Book each day, Monday through Thursday. Dr. Avossa will reveal and read aloud the Top Secret Book on Friday, January 29 th. Each school will receive their own copy of the book to add to their media center collection. Literacy Fest - In partnership with Scholastic, elementary teachers are invited to a one day conference on Saturday January 30 th. There will be a keynote address by Pam Allyn and several breakout sessions for teachers to learn from and with each other. Department of Elementary Education Suggested Activity: Cheer for a Book Day - We cheer for our favorite team because we hold a deep belief that this team is the best team in that sport. The same goes for a book! Today we want to cheer for our favorite book because we believe it is the best book we have ever read! On Cheer For a Book Day we want everyone to know why this is the best book! Additional School Activities: Allamanda Elementary- Mystery readers reading in each classroom.

C.O.T. Kirklane Elementary Cheer for a Book Day - All students and teachers should plan to dress for their favorite book. They should be prepared to tell everyone why theirs is the best book! Congress Middle - Literacy Changes Our World Door Decorating Contest Discovery Key Elementary - Mystery Clue #1 Favorite Book: Use the attached template and illustrate a new cover for your favorite book. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary- SUPER HEROES are SUPER READERS -- make a "I am a SUPER READER bookmark -- my SUPER POWER is..." Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary- Cheer for your favorite book! K-2 Students - Dress like your favorite storybook character. Carry the book with you throughout the day and cheer all about why it s your favorite! 3-5 Students - Dress as a mascot or create a uniform that represents the theme of your favorite book. What would the team colors be? Would you have a logo? Be as creative as you can be. Forest Park Elementary - Cheer for Book Day Students can dress up in their favorite sports shirt and hat. They will carry their book with them. During lunch students will be selected to share why this is their favorite book. *Boynton Beach High Football players and Cheerleaders will read to 3 rd -5 th. Freedom Shores Elementary Jersey Day - Cheer for a book and wear your favorite team jersey. Gold Coast Community School D.E.A.R. First twenty minutes of the day will be spent in independent reading. Heritage Elementary Cheer for a Book Day! Carry your favorite book to school and Cheer about it by telling your class why it s the best book ever! Hope Centennial Create class posters of favorite books to display in halls and buddy reading with different grade levels. Independence Middle School 6 th and 7 th graders will read The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. Jupiter Middle School Read to elementary students.

Palm Beach Central High School Bronco Bursts Faculty/Staff Readers in Classrooms, Inspirational Literacy Message w/video Clip Shared in Homeroom, Children s Book Drive Kick Off (Literacy Bags to be donated to local hospital or pediatricians 4 th quarter), Banners Displayed by SGA, and Bulletin Board Displays throughout campus Palm Beach Public Elementary A mystery reader will visit classrooms to read to students. Santaluces High School- Write on Literacy Wall (Favorite book or quote), Commercial/PSA, and Door Decorating Contest Seminole Trails Elementary- Classroom Guest Readers, Reading with Buddy Class, and Top Secret Book. The Conservatory School of North Palm Beach- Teachers and students share their favorite book. Timber Trace Elementary- Principal Read on News, Bookmarks to Students, and Door Decorating Classroom Turning Points Academy- Literacy Poster Contest, DEAR, Door Contest, Take a Picture with Your Favorite Book U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary Cheer for a Book Day! Verde Elementary-Design Bookmarks and Door Decorating Contest Wellington Elementary- Mayor of Wellington to read to students. Wellington High School- Book Swap and reading of Notes on the Art of Poetry by Dylan Thomas. West Riviera Elementary- Martin Luther King, Jr. Activities (shared reading, reader s theater, etc.). Department of Elementary Education Suggested Activity: Literacy Outside - We can read and write anywhereincluding outside! Today we want to enjoy the Florida sunshine and cool winter weather as we celebrate literacy! Additional School Activities: Allamanda Elementary- Mystery book for each classroom to guess from 20 questions. C.O.T. Kirklane Elementary Literacy Outside - We can read and write anywhere-including outside! Students and teachers can dress cozy and bring a towel or a blanket to read or write outside or somewhere comfortable in their classroom during independent reading.

Eisenhower Elementary- Picnic on the Playground - All parents and students are invited to bring their lunch outdoors picnic style and share their favorite stories with each other on large blankets or towels. Forest Park Elementary - Literacy Outdoor Style - Students wear sunglasses and hat. Students will read to a book buddy outside using the picnic table area. Freedom Shores Elementary Twin Day - Dress alike with your friends to support literacy. Gold Coast Community School D.E.A.R. First twenty minutes of the day will be spent in independent reading. Heritage Elementary Literacy Picnic Take your books outdoors for some reading fun in the sun! Hope Centennial Read with partners outside. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary Literacy Outside Verde Elementary- Write Your Own Star Wars Adventure Wellington Elementary- DEAR on a Civic Topic Wellington High School- Pictures of students with their favorite books will be displayed. West Riviera Elementary- Snuggle Up with a Good Book Department of Elementary Education Suggested Activity: Literacy in Our Lives - Literacy has impacted many people s lives. Today we want to celebrate favorite books of some of our community members and hear how literacy is significant in their everyday career. Additional School Activities: Allamanda Elementary- Students will dress up as their favorite character. C.O.T. Kirklane Elementary Literacy in Our Lives On this day, we encourage all students and teachers to choose a poem to put in their pocket. They should be ready and willing to share it at any time! Thursday, January 28 Gold Coast Community School D.E.A.R. First twenty minutes of the day will be spent in independent reading. Heritage Elementary - Literacy in our Lives - Teachers read your favorite childhood book to your class and talk about how it impacted your life. Hope Centennial Police officers will read their favorite book to classes and buddy reading with different grade levels. Independence Middle School 6 th and 7 th graders will read The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. Jupiter Middle School Students will create commercials about books. Morikami Park Elementary Grades 3-5 Author Visit: Michael Patrick O Neil and Literacy Night with author. Palm Beach Central High School Bronco Bursts Faculty/Staff Guest Readers in Classrooms, Inspirational Literacy Message w/video Clip Shared in Homeroom, and Bronco Book Drive Continues. Palm Beach Public Elementary Students will go out in the hallway and read side by side forming a worm. Santaluces High School- Guess the Page Numbers, Write on Literacy Wall (favorite book or quote), Commercial/PSA, and Door Decorating Contest Seminole Trails Elementary- Record favorite book to create a Celebrate Literacy 2016 Memory Display. The Conservatory School of North Palm Beach- Community member will share a book with students. Timber Trace Elementary- McDonald s Night for Literacy Turning Points Academy- Guest Reader & Chalk Talk U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary Literacy In Our Lives Verde Elementary-Readers Theater Wellington Elementary- Literacy Night Wellington High School- Journalism students will patrol campus to catch people reading. Students may research a particular person from the past or present to learn about their contribution to society. Additional School Activities:

Freedom Shores Elementary Crazy Hair Day - Show your support for books by wearing your craziest hairdo. Gold Coast Community School ELA-Reading classes will conduct book talks and discussions. Heritage Elementary People Who Changed the World Read books about real people and their influence on our lives. Share what you learned with a partner. Hope Centennial Groups of students will read about a famous person and create a Famous Person graphic. Buddy reading with different grade levels. Independence Middle School 6 th and 7 th graders will read The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. Friday, January 29 Palm Beach Public Elementary Teachers will buddy up with another class to form Book Buddies. Santaluces High School- Lantana Library-Virtual Sign-Up, Write on Literacy Wall (favorite book or quote), Commercial/PSA, and Door Decorating Contest Seminole Trails Elementary- Stories of how kids can make a difference will be read. The Conservatory School of North Palm Beach- Teacher/student shares an article/book about a person who has made a difference in the world. Timber Trace Elementary- Celebrate literacy by wearing your favorite team jersey. Verde Elementary-PTA/Literacy Night at Chilis Turning Points Academy- Write a paragraph on Literacy Changes Our World, write about the theme of the book, and dress-up as favorite character. U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary Angus: Pony of the Everglades Author Visit Wellington High School- Dress as your favorite character. West Riviera Elementary- Buddy Reading Day Department of Elementary Education Suggested Activity: Celebrating a Life of Literacy - We might be celebrating literacy this week, but we really celebrate it every day! Additional School Activities: Allamanda Elementary- Students will buddy read with other classes outside and around the school. C.O.T. Kirklane Elementary Celebrating a Life of Literacy - Finish your bulletin boards. Pictures will be taken of your class in front of your bulletin board and posted on the HEROES bulletin board in the back atrium. Classes vote on their favorite book & the teacher dresses up as a character on Friday They read the book aloud together OR create a poster/ad for the book OR decorate their door/bulletin board! favorite stories and poems. They will decorate their doors to share their special interests with the school.
