PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (15-24) vs. PITTSBURGH PIRATES (18-24) Saturday, May 20, 2017 PNC Park 4:05 p.m. EDT Game 40; Road 24 RHP Vince Velasquez (2-3, 5.63) vs RHP Ivan Nova (3-3, 2.48) LAST NIGHT S ACTION: The Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-2, at PNC Park in Pittsburgh Starter Jeremy Hellickson (W, 5-1) tossed 6.0 innings and allowed 1 ER on 2 hits with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts Pittsburgh jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a pair of hits and an error Philadelphia would fight back and had a 3-2 lead heading into the 9 th inning Cameron Rupp blasted a 3-run opposite field home run to break the game wide open Hector Neris pitched a scoreless 9 th inning. ELIAS SAYS: After allowing two runs in the first inning, Jeremy Hellickson stifled the Pirates over the next five innings, giving the Phillies time to earn a comeback win in Pittsburgh Hellickson looked to be in trouble early after allowing hits to the Pirates first two batters, but he quickly recovered, completing six innings without allowing another hit It had been over five years since the last time a Phillies starting pitcher allowed hits to the first two batters he faced and went on to complete at least six innings without surrendering another hit That particular outing also occurred at PNC Park in Pittsburgh In Philadelphia s 2012 season opener, Roy Halladay threw eight scoreless innings to earn the win for the Phillies, and the only two hits he allowed on the day were a pair of first-inning singles by the Pirates first two batters. TOM TERRIFIC: First baseman Tommy Joseph has raised his batting average 106 points over his last 22 games played Since April 20, Joseph is batting.329 with a.398 on-base percentage and.630 slugging percentage (83 plate appearances) Of his 24 hits in that span, 12 have been for extra bases (7 2B, 5 HR) Joseph has a 1.258 OPS during the month of May and trails only LAA s Mike Trout (1.324) for the Major League lead for the month.
