INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION On behalf of Horse Racing Ireland, I am pleased to present the thirteenth edition of the Irish Racing Factbook, which looks back on. This 72-page publication contains a wide-range of statistics relating to the racing and breeding industry in Ireland, covering fixtures, runners, attendances, prize-money, the output of the breeding sector and the betting turnover generated on and off-course. Please let us know if there are any other areas that should be covered as we aim to produce a comprehensive overview of all relevant statistics. will be committed to the memory as a stellar year for Irish racing with nineteen Irish-trained winners at the Cheltenham festival setting the tone for a year of international success, followed by a Melbourne Cup success for 24-year-old trainer Joseph O Brien, and a world record 28 Group and Grade 1 Flat winners for his father, Aidan. Irish bloodstock sales increased for the eighth consecutive year with the value of Irish bloodstock sold at public auction being 175.6m, up 7% on the figures. Irish-bred horses continued to dominate at the highest levels internationally and the value of Irish-foaled exports sold at public auction was 271.5m, with clients from 31 different countries investing in Irish bloodstock Tote Ireland saw a seventh successive year of turnover growth. Revenue grew 7.2% from 96.8m to 103.8m in the year. This growth was driven by betting into Irish pools (up 9.5%) and international pools (up 11.1%). On-course betting (Tote and Bookmakers) declined by 6.2%, reflecting the continuing challenge being experienced by all on-course operators. Racecourse attendances in decreased by 3%, impacted by the reduced numbers at the Curragh, in particular the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and day two of the Longines Irish Champions Weekend. We look forward to the completion of the redevelopment in 2019, when the Curragh will have facilities to match the world class action on the track. Attendances at the major jumps festivals in the first six months of were very strong, highlighted by Punchestown s Spring Festival, which attracted a record attendance of 122,557. European Breeders Fund (EBF) sponsorship grew by 15.8%, and commercial sponsorship continued its recovery, growing by another 3%. This upward trend is very encouraging and shows that confidence in horse racing s appeal as an advertising and promotional vehicle for business is strong. Prize-money grew by 7.6% to 61.1m with a further increase of 2.2m (3.6%) budgeted for 2018. HRI remains committed to increasing prize-money to remain competitive with our European counterparts and to attract and retain racehorse owners in Ireland. The rise in active owners is reflected in increases in entries and runners for both Flat and National Hunt racing, with the average field size increasing from 11.2 to 11.5 runners overall. In, Flat entries were up by 10.4% and runners by 5.7%, while National Hunt figures also rose, with overall increases in entries (2%) and runners (1.7%) Our sector is facing a series of challenges in the areas of funding, infrastructure, staffing and in particular Brexit and Horse Racing Ireland is engaging with Government, stakeholders and our international counterparts on these matters. We have great ambition to build on the growth and success of and look forward to engaging with the industry on these plans. Horse racing generates a very significant return to the rural economy in Ireland and positive international profile for our country. The Sports Business Group at Deloitte, in their report into the Economic Impact of Irish Breeding and Racing, published in September, estimated that the industry contributes 1.84bn annually to the Irish economy, supporting directly and indirectly, almost 29,000 jobs. Despite our size, we are the third biggest producers of thoroughbred foals in the world and estimates place Ireland only behind the United States as the biggest seller of bloodstock by public auction globally. As proven in, Irish owners, trainers, jockeys and horses are setting standards globally and I wish everyone involved in this important national industry a very successful 2018. Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive IRISH BLOODSTOCK SALES INCREASED FOR THE EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR WITH THE VALUE OF IRISH BLOODSTOCK SOLD AT PUBLIC AUCTION BEING 175.6M, UP 7% ON THE FIGURES. 2 HORSE RACING IRELAND FACTBOOK

WILL BE COMMITTED TO THE MEMORY AS A STELLAR YEAR FOR IRISH RACING WITH NINETEEN IRISH-TRAINED WINNERS AT THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL SETTING THE TONE FOR A YEAR OF INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS, FOLLOWED BY A MELBOURNE CUP SUCCESS FOR 24-YEAR-OLD TRAINER JOSEPH O BRIEN, AND A WORLD RECORD 28 GROUP AND GRADE 1 WINNERS FOR HIS FATHER, AIDAN. NATIONAL HUNT REVIEW OF NATIONAL HUNT REVIEW OF In terms of winners saddled and prize-money won, two trainers were well on top in. The gap between Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott might well be closing, but the pair continue to hold sway over their contemporaries. But it wasn t all about the big two. Others had their moments in the spotlight. Jessica Harrington, Henry De Bromhead and Noel Meade enjoyed continued success at the very highest level. Joseph O Brien was a big winner at the Galway Festival while there was notable success during the year for Ellmarie Holden and John Joe Walsh. Sizing John and Our Duke were Jessica Harrington s star preformers. Benefitting from a step up in trip, Sizing John went on a winning run that began at Thurles in January and took in the Grade 1 Stan James Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown, the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Coral Punchestown Gold Cup. He became the first horse to win three Gold Cups in the same season and returned to Punchestown in early December to win the Grade 1 John Durkan Memorial Chase. Harrington is the first Irish trainer to have won the Gold Cup, Champion Chase and Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Our Duke landed the most valuable Irish prize when successful in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday. Henry De Bromhead claimed three major prizes towards the end of January. Twenty-five years after his father Harry saddled Grand Habit to win the Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park, Henry won the Goffs-sponsored event with Champagne West, the mount of David Mullins. At Leopardstown, just four days later, Davy Russell partnered Some Plan to win the Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Novice Chase and Mullins was again in the saddle as Petit Mouchoir won the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle to complete a Grade 1 double on the day for the Knockeen, County Waterford trainer. Noel Meade bagged four top-level races during the year. Disko gave Sean Flanagan his first Grade 1 success in the Flogas Novice Chase at Leopardstown in February while at Fairyhouse two months later, Road To Respect was the winner of the Ryanair Gold Cup under Bryan Cooper. Having missed the first six weeks of the year through injury, Cooper was back in the saddle as Disko took the Growise Champion Novice Chase at Punchestown. Flanagan ended on a high when taking the Leopardstown Christmas Chase, the final Grade 1 of the year, on Road To Respect. While Grade 1 success eluded him in, Joseph O Brien was also among the big winners. He won the year s richest prize over hurdles as Tigris River and Barry Geraghty took the Guinness Galway Hurdle. Another big handicap winner was Ellmarie Holden who teamed up with Rachael Blackmore to win the Ladbrokes Leinster National at Naas in March with Abolitionist. John Joe Walsh shared two significant winners with Blackmore, landing a notable Galway Festival success with Ballyegan Hero and then scoring with Davids Charm in another 100,000 handicap hurdle at the Winter Festival at Fairyhouse in December. Elliott pushed Mullins all the way in the race to be crowned champion trainer for the / season which came to a thrilling conclusion at the Irish National Hunt Festival at Punchestown. At the turn of the year, he trailed Elliott by 220,000 and the young pretender consolidated his position in January with three big wins, shared with Jack Kennedy. The pair won the first Grade 1 of the year, with Death Duty successful in the Lawlor s Hotel Novice Hurdle at Naas and then Ball D Arc and A Toi Phil helped maintain their trainer s remarkable winning streak in the biggest of handicap chases. Mullins victory with Bacardys, ridden by his son Patrick in the Grade 1 Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown in early February was matched by Elliott taking the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle with Mega Fortune on the same card. Mullins had the better of the exchanges at the Fairyhouse Easter Festival but still trailed his great rival by a little over 400,000 on the eve of the Punchestown festival. The reigning champion made a bright start to the final week of the season when winning the Herald Champion Novice Hurdle with Cilaos Emery, ridden by David Mullins. On the second day of the festival, while Elliott bounced back with success for Champagne Classic (Bryan Cooper) in the Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle and with Fayonagh, ridden by Jamie Codd, in the Racing Post Champion Bumper, the number of placed horses in the biggest races, including Penhill and Djakadam, emanating from Closutton was beginning to make a difference. There were three British-trained winners on day three of the festival, but Mullins was beginning to turn the screw. Nichols Canyon just lost out to Harry Fry s Unowhatimeanharry in the Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle, gaining valuable prize-money in the process and better was to come for his trainer as Great Field gave Jody McGarvey a first Grade 1 victory in the Ryanair Chase. Elliott drew a blank on the day but still maintained an advantage with just two days of the season remaining. But it was all to change on Friday. For the first time in the season, Mullins got his nose in front thanks to success for Wicklow Brave, the outsider of his four runners, in the Betdaq Punchestown Champion Hurdle and Bacardys in the Tattersalls Ireland Champion Novice Hurdle. Willie s son Patrick rode both Grade 1 winners and at the close of business, he led by 91,000. The final afternoon saw Elliott strike first with Apple s Jade beating four Mullins horses to win the Irish Stallion Farms 4 HORSE RACING IRELAND FACTBOOK

EBF Mares Champion Hurdle. But he was shaking hands after the AES Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdle which went the way of the Mullins-trained Bapaume and the game was up before Mullins Open Eagle landed the final major prize of the term, the Ballymore Handicap Hurdle. Trailing by 400,000 at the start of the week, Mullins retained his championship by 200,000 thanks not only to his winners, but to the number of placed horses he saddled as the season ended. Patrick Mullins was very much a contributory factor to his father s championship success. He rode important winners when it mattered, three Grade 1s during the season, but his own title challenge came up agonisingly short. First crowned champion amateur in the 2007/2008 season, he had retained the title every year until losing out this time by a single winner (41-40) to Jamie Codd who was enjoying his first championship success. It was more of a stroll for Ruby Walsh who equalled his previous best total of 131 winners to win his 12th champion jockeys title while Gigginstown House Stud were Champion Owner for the fifth time. History was created when Rachael Blackmore became the first female to win the Conditional Riders title. With 32 winners, the Killenaule, County Tipperary native ended the season 10 clear of Donagh Meyler with JJ Slevin taking third place. The Cheltenham Festival was never kinder to Irish trainers, yielding a record 19 winners. Gordon Elliott recorded an opening afternoon treble with Labaik landing the Sky Bet Supreme Novices Hurdle, giving 17-year-old Jack Kennedy his first taste of Cheltenham Festival glory. Apple s Jade, the mount of Bryan Cooper, won the OLBG Mares Hurdle and Tiger Roll became Elliott s third winner of the day when taking the JT McNamara National Hunt Chase, giving amateur rider Lisa O Neill a first Cheltenham Festival victory. Elliott and O Neill would combine for another significant success later in the year as they were to win the Guinness Kerry National for a second successive year, this time with Potters Point. A fourth Irish winner on the opening day of Cheltenham came in the shape of Tully East who gave Alan Fleming a first Festival winner when taking the Close Brothers Novices Handicap Chase under Denis O Regan. The opening day tally of four winners was matched on Wednesday. Supasundae saw Jessica Harrington become the most successful female trainer in the history of the Festival when taking the Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle in the hands of Robbie Power. Special Tiara gave Henry de Bromhead a fourth festival success when landing the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase under Noel Fehily and Gordon Elliott enjoyed two late winners, both partnered by Jamie Codd. Cause Of Causes won for the third straight year at the Festival under the County Wexford amateur rider when running away with the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase which saw Irish-trained horses fill the first four places. Elliott and Codd followed up in the final race of the afternoon, the Weatherbys Champion Bumper with Fayonagh who came from last to first to record a memorable win. Thursday proved to be an exceptional day for Irish trainers who won six of the seven races. Willie Mullins was responsible for four winners, repeating his remarkable opening day exploits of the Festival. He won the JLT Novices Chase with Yorkhill, the Ryanair Chase with Un De Sceaux, his 50th Festival winner, the Sun Bets Stayers Hurdle with Nichols Canyon and the Trull House Stud Mares Novices Hurdle with Let s Dance. Ruby Walsh partnered the Mullins quartet to become the first jockey to ride four winners on the same day at the Festival. Not surprisingly, he ended the week as the leading rider for the 11th time. For the second year running, County Galway trainer Pat Kelly and Davy Russell landed the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle for owner Philip Reynolds, this time with Presenting Percy. Road To Respect gave Noel Meade his fifth winner at the Cheltenham Festival when taking the Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase, a second winner of the week for Bryan Cooper. Mullins was the first Irish trainer off the mark on Friday when the Paul Townend-ridden Arctic Fire defied top-weight in the Randox Health County Handicap Hurdle. Townend was quickly back in the winners enclosure when partnering the Mullins-trained Penhill to success in the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle. To add to the success of Sizing John in the Timico Gold Cup itself, the meeting finished on a high for Irish trainers as Champagne Classic (JJ Slevin) won for Gordon Elliott in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle. And the 28th and final race went to Ireland and Jessica Harrington as Rock The World came out on top in the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase giving Robbie Power his fourth Festival success in all. OUR DUKE LANDED THE MOST VALUABLE IRISH PRIZE WHEN SUCCESSFUL IN THE BOYLESPORTS IRISH GRAND NATIONAL AT FAIRYHOUSE ON EASTER MONDAY. NATIONAL HUNT REVIEW OF HORSE RACING IRELAND FACTBOOK 5

FLAT SEASON REVIEW OF FLAT SEASON REVIEW OF Irish trainers enjoyed tremendous success once again in. Domestically and on the world stage Aidan O Brien was winning at every turn and his son Joseph also got in on the history-making act many miles from home. Aidan set a new world record for the number of Group and Grade 1 winners trained on the Flat in a calendar year. He ended the year with a top-flight tally of 28 which saw him comfortably better the record of 25 set by the late American trainer Bobby Frankel in 2003. And Joseph spearheaded one of the greatest days in Irish racing history as Rekindling led home an Irish-trained 1-2- 3 in the Emirates Melbourne Cup. At just 24 years of age, Joseph is the youngest trainer to win the race. Rekindling was the third Irish-trained winner of the world s richest handicap. His success bridged a 15-year gap since the Dermot Weld-trained Media Puzzle claimed victory in 2002, nine years after Weld s Vintage Crop had won in 1993, the year Joseph O Brien was born. Aidan O Brien won four of the five Irish Classics and was only deprived of a clean sweep by the outstanding Enable, trained by John Gosden, in the Darley Irish Oaks. Churchill, ridden by Ryan Moore and Winter, with Wayne Lordan in the saddle, kickstarted what was going to be an outstanding year for Ballydoyle with wins at Newmarket in both the 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas respectively. They were both winners again at the Curragh in late May, scoring in decisive fashion. Ridden by Seamie Heffernan, Capri gave O Brien a 12th success in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the beginning of July and on Longines Irish Champions Weekend, Order Of St George put his defeat in the race in behind him to land a second Comer Group International Irish St Leger. Aidan had quite a stranglehold on the Group 1 races run in Britain. He won the Investec Coronation Cup at Epsom with Highland Reel and the following afternoon was celebrating a sixth Epsom Derby success as Padraig Beggy partnered 40/1 chance Wings Of Eagles to a narrow win over another Ballydoyle inmate, Cliffs Of Moher. O Brien saddled six winners at Royal Ascot, three at Group 1 level, where he would emerge as the leading trainer for the eighth time. Highland Reel won the Prince of Wales s Stakes, Caravaggio took the Commonwealth Cup while Winter led home a 1-2-3 for Ballydoyle in the Coronation Stakes. O Brien s other winners during the week were Sioux Nation in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, Idaho in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes and September in the Listed Chesham Stakes. He has now trained 60 winners at Royal Ascot. Willie Mullins was responsible for a seventh Irish-trained winner as Thomas Hobson won the Ascot Stakes on the opening Tuesday. Ballydoyle s Group 1 winners just kept coming. Roly Poly was to win three before the season was out and Winter went one better with a final tally of four to become the biggest contributor to her trainer s record year. Sioux Nation was the first of the Ballydoyle juveniles to win a Group 1 with his success in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. Hydrangea, Happily and Order Of St George were all big winners on Longines Irish Champions Weekend and Rhododendron won the Prix de l Opera. The younger brigade certainly played their part with Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Happily following up at Chantilly and U S Navy Flag also winning twice at the highest level as he became O Brien s tenth European champion colt. Clemmie, the champion European 6 HORSE RACING IRELAND FACTBOOK

AIDAN O BRIEN WON FOUR OF THE FIVE IRISH CLASSICS AND WAS ONLY DEPRIVED OF A CLEAN SWEEP BY THE OUTSTANDING ENABLE, TRAINED BY JOHN GOSDEN, IN THE DARLEY IRISH OAKS. juvenile filly, and Saxon Warrior were other big two-year-old winners with the latter breaking Bobby Frankel s record in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster at the end of October. Mendelssohn became O Brien s 27 Group 1 winner of the year in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf and a new record was created when Highland Reel brought down the curtain on a remarkable career featuring seven Group 1 wins with success in the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin. In all, Ballydoyle won seven of the 12 Group 1 races in Ireland. Jim Bolger landed the Goffs Vincent O Brien National Stakes with the Kevin Manning-ridden Verbal Dexterity and the remaining four races went abroad. Roger Charlton won both the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh and the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown with Decorated Knight, the latter race going for export for the sixth successive year. Both horses were ridden by Andrea Atzeni as was Nezwaah which won the Curragh s Pretty Polly Stakes for Roger Varian. Two weeks later Enable landed the Darley Irish Oaks for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori. Almost a match for his father s yearlong exploits was Joseph O Brien s win in the Emirates Melbourne Cup with Rekindling, a third Irish-trained success in the race. What made this win so special from an Irish point of view is that Rekindling was chased home by fellow raiders Johannes Vermeer, trained by Aidan O Brien and Willie Mullins Max Dynamite, narrowly defeated in the race in. Rekindling was the first threeyear-old to prevail since 1941. Both Dermot Weld and Tony Martin also enjoyed big race success on foreign territory. Weld won the Grade 1 Man o War Stakes at Belmont Park in May with Zhukova while Martin scooped his first Group 1 success when Laganore won the Premio Lydia Tesio at Capannelle in Rome at the end of October. It was also a breakthrough top-level win for Colin Keane. It was certainly the County Meath jockey s year. He had finished runnerup to Pat Smullen in the championship for the two previous seasons, but it was his turn to shine and a career-best tally of 100 domestic winners was more than enough to see him lift the title for the first time. The duel between the pair was one of the enduring stories and it was only in the final two weeks that the young pretender put daylight between himself and the nine-time champion, although he had led the way for most of the year. The winning margin was 12, helped by a final day double at Naas for Ger Lyons stable jockey. Lyons supplied Keane with 67 winners during the season. Smullen finished second on 88 winners with Donnacha O Brien taking third place in the championship on 62 winners and Kevin Manning next on the list with 59. For the second time, Billy Lee has surpassed the half-century and ended the season with 54 winners to his name. The race to be crowned champion apprentice was even closer and was only confirmed on the final day of the season. Oisin Orr, from Rathmullan, County Donegal prevailed with 20 winners, enough to see him finish just one clear of Killian Leonard. Ana O Brien didn t ride after her fall at Killarney in July but her tally of 18 winners saw her take third place in the title race. As well as taking the title in Britain for the sixth time, Aidan O Brien was the champion trainer at home for the 20th year, topping off a fantastic season at home and abroad for Ballydoyle. Mrs Sue Magnier s involvement with horses such as Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Winter and Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes winner Caravaggio saw her retain the title of Champion Owner for the 15th time since 2000. Mrs Magnier just came out ahead of her fellow Coolmore partners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith in prize-money won. FLAT SEASON REVIEW OF HORSE RACING IRELAND FACTBOOK 7

MARKETING REVIEW MARKETING REVIEW OVERVIEW The primary purpose of the Horse Racing Ireland Commercial and Marketing Department is to tell the story of Irish racing by engaging current and potential racegoers to maximise attendances at race meetings and increase interest levels in racing. Based on research, our marketing campaigns are designed to communicate to two key audiences. A national radio campaign, themed nothing else feels like this targets National Hunt regular and occasional racegoers. The key Flat meetings and festivals throughout the summer season, attract a younger, more urban demographic who s core motivation to go racing, is to socialise with friends. We communicate to this audience with a highly targeted and measured online and social media campaign. Research tells us that 25% of Irish adults (886,000 pop. est.) are interested in horse racing - A slightly higher level of interest than previous years. 1.28m people went racing in which reflected some strong performances from the key festivals and also accounts for the reduced capacity at the Curragh, in particular the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and day two of the Longines Irish Champions Weekend. CAMPAIGNS The Longines Irish Champions Weekend is a key project for HRI Commerical and Marketing. HRI Commercial and Marketing, the Curragh and Leopardstown combined to promote this event with an integrated marketing communication campaign, targeted specifically at Irish and British racing and sporting fans and socialisers. The traditional media campaign was leveraged with an increased social media campaign which generated widespread awareness, engagement and media coverage pre and post event. A core function of HRI Commercial and Marketing is to provide dedicated marketing and PR support to all racecourses to grow attendances at their key race meetings. We work with all the racecourses to help them understand their customers demographics and media consumption habits. Based on that intelligence, we assist the tracks to develop their sales, marketing and communications strategies. We also support racecourses and industry bodies with media advice and PR assistance. In addition, we leverage daily racing news and previews, including audio clips to every radio station in the country which includes podcasts and video clips, across all our social media channels. NEXT GENERATION In 2010, we established the Go Racing Kids Club. Its primary function is to build community engagement between the racecourses and their local towns, encouraging an affinity with racing which will recruit new racegoers. The activities educate school children about racing and show them what happens behind the scenes at the racecourse including meeting the racecourse staff, a jockey and a racehorse together with its trainer. Since 2010, over 14,000 children have taken part in the programme and in alone, nearly 2000 children from 40 schools participated. Student race days, stud and racing yard visits give HRI marketing another opportunity to engage with the youth market and recruit new racegoers into the sport. In, HRI supported seven student race days which attracted approximately 40,000 students. DIGITAL MEDIA Digital media plays an integral role in each marketing campaign We populate all of our digital channels with highly targeted messaging, live race-day action and multimedia content to serve the racegoer and win new fans. This has resulted in a suite of social channels that display highly 8 HORSE RACING IRELAND FACTBOOK

RACECOURSE DIVISION REVIEW HRI Racecourses had another memorable year in. Irish Champions Weekend again featured a Best Race in the World with the Matron Stakes proving the strongest fillies and mares race anywhere on the planet in. The Champion Stakes was won by an English-trained runner, the Roger Charlton-trained Decorated Knight, swooping late for his third Group 1 win before taking up stallion duties at the Irish National Stud. Leopardstown s mid-summer Bulmers Live at Leopardstown was strongly supported, helping Leopardstown to again attract a total attendance for the year of over 170,000. The launch in October of a new concept called the Dublin Racing Festival, which takes place in February, creates a new focus for the season and was described as the best innovation in the National Hunt season by champion jockey Ruby Walsh. The Leopardstown Christmas festival was notable for many great performances but perhaps the scene was set by Ellie Mac in the first race on St Stephen s Day for the Niccolai Schuster family and a huge throng of supporters, remembering Niccolai who was so tragically lost in Berkeley. That victory was followed by wins for the Bobbett family and the Acheson family, McMahons, Mahoneys and the Roaringwater Syndicate, in what was to prove a festival full of joyful celebration. Fairyhouse witnessed scenes of great joy too when the Cooper family from Coolrain made their dreams come true when Our Duke stormed home in the Boylesports Irish Grand National, an event which certainly helped trainer RACECOURSE DIVISION REVIEW 10 HORSE RACING IRELAND FACTBOOK

RACECOURSE DIVISION REVIEW Jessica Harrington become the Sport Star of the Year. The Winter Racing Festival in December saw Gordon Elliott train all three Grade 1 winners on the card for Gigginstown House Stud with Mengli Khan, Death Duty and Apples Jade although the victories of Presenting Percy for Pat Kelly and Downtown Getaway for Margaret Mullins in the bumper also pointed to great things to come. Navan featured the Troytown Chase in November and the Jones family won it with Mala Beach following the hoofprints of The Ellier back in 1984. The same card saw Samcro enhance his reputation in the Monksfield novices hurdle. Navan s value for Flat racing was exemplified by the belated debut of Goldrush in September before her rise to Stakes winner and justification for her sales topping status at Goffs as a yearling. Tipperary featured some great days and evenings of sport in the Summer, including hosting the Pride of Tipperary pageant and also featuring a mini-fleadh in the battle of the bands, but the racing was competitive too. Former champion hurdler Jezki stormed back to form in the Istabraq Hurdle while champion jockey elect Colin Keane won the Group 3 Coolmore Concorde Stakes for Ger Lyons on Psychedelic Funk. IRISH THOROUGHBRED MARKETING IRISH THOROUGHBRED MARKETING Irish racing will undoubtedly remember as the year their champion trainer Aidan O Brien matched Bobby Frankel s record of 25 Group 1 winners in a calendar year, and indeed surpassed it with 28 top-level victories in total. Unsurprisingly, he won the British trainers championship for a sixth time, with prize money earnings of 8,335,028. Aidan s son, Joseph, always seemed destined to follow in his footsteps and the pinnacle of his short career to date came in November, as Rekindling captured the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup. It must be the only scenario in which father Aidan would be happy finishing second in a race worth Aus$6.2million, while Willie Mullins took third in a remarkable 1-2-3 for Irish trainers. The aforementioned Willie Mullins is experiencing increased success on the Flat and also retained his champion National Hunt trainer title for the / season. He was, however, pushed to the wire by Gordon Elliott during a tense Punchestown Festival, though Elliott reaped some compensation when crowned champion trainer at the Cheltenham Festival. Irish trainers took 19 races at the Cheltenham Festival, while Irish breeders cheered home 12 winners, including five at Grade 1 level. The Flat equivalent, Royal Ascot, featured the same 12 Irishbred winners, contributing to 20 of the 36 Group 1 races run in Britain during the year won by Irish-bred horses. Irish breeders continued to enjoy much success further afield, too, with one of the first being Zhukova (IRE) s six length victory in the Grade 1 Man O War Stakes at Belmont Park for Dermot Weld, and she in turn became the first mare since 1978 to win the prestigious contest. Irish mares have enjoyed increased success on the US turf in recent years, with Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes heroine Off Limits (IRE) being their new poster girl since her purchase from David Wachman s stable. Top-level success by Irish horses certainly adds to the appeal of Irish bloodstock sales and saw increased 12 HORSE RACING IRELAND FACTBOOK

The Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale continued to set new records in May, with turnover reaching just over 6million, with the help of 13 six-figure lots. The Irish store sales continued the record-breaking trend, as the Goffs Land Rover Sale grew in aggregate by 4% and returned ten six-figure lots. Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale, meanwhile, saw a 24% increase in turnover and a whopping 33 horses make six-figure prices. The yearling sales followed suit, with Tattersalls Ireland breaking new ground in returns and buyers, with a record sales topper of 230,000, and Godolphin and Hong Kong Jockey Club joined the buyers list for the first time. The Goffs Orby also experienced landmark buys, as Godolphin purchased a Galileo (IRE) filly worth 1.2million, and the Zayat family of American Pharoah fame came away with the 1.6million top lot. The November sales were not to be outdone, as competitive trade at Tattersalls Ireland s November NH Sale produced a record average and median. The Goffs Foal and Breeding Stock Sale also saw increases across the board, topped by the world s highest-priced foal in at 1.1million., for ITM, began on a high with 3,000 visitors turning out for the third renewal of the ITM Irish Stallion Trail. The stallions in question continued their domination throughout the year, as Galileo (IRE) was crowned Champion Sire for the ninth time, while Kodiac drew plaudits for his 60 juvenile winners, surpassing Sunday Silence s previous record. Irish stallions accounted for eight of the top ten sires in Europe by winners in, and with 12 Group 1 winners joining the Irish stallion ranks in 2018, there is much to look forward to.
