January MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MAIN-SHEET Dalgety Bay Sailing Club In this issue! HAPPY NEW YEAR! W h a t s G o i n g O n? Sailing in 2010 Goings On Over Winter? Training Update Hogmanay 09 Upcoming Events Training Videos 100 Club Draws Rugby At DBSC Other Events Outside DBSC F irstly I would like to wish each and every one of you a Very Happy New Year, both on and off the water. I would also like to say Congratulations to Hazel Williamson and John Bell on their engagement, I understand John proposed in the sailing club, just before midnight to the delight of all around. tremendous amount of effort into planning well in advance so please take note of the key dates which have been set and get them in your diary now. That s right don t do it later, lets support 2010 and make it even more successful than we managed in 09. Andy Marshall Commodore@dalgetybaysc.org I hope like me you are all very excited about 2010, and everything that we have at DBSC to offer the membership. I am really looking forward to the social occasions that are planned for the early part of the year and hope to see many of you supporting these and enjoying the buzz at the club. This is an excellent time for new members to come along for a chat and to meet all the friendly faces that we boast at DBSC. Sharon and her social team have already put a

With all the white stuff on the ground I am sure many of you will be enjoying the opportunity to Ski in Scotland and will be quite happy to forget you own a boat during the -22 C conditions which we have been experiencing. At DBSC we have been quite lucky with a tropical -9 C in comparison to that up north. All this aside, the new Sailing Season will be upon us in no time and we will be thinking about boats again once our ski s, boards and snow chains have been hung up for another year. Like many of you I have already decided on the events which I am planning to attend across Scotland and beyond. However, let s not forget the club sailing which we are hoping will see a boost in participants for all on Tuesday s (training) Wednesday s, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Our sailing team have concluded the events Sailing in 2010 calendar and we hope to be able to issue this very soon so that duties and event planning can all be undertaken by us all. The Sailing Team Whats Been Happening Over The Winter? At the close of the year some of the behind the scenes topics of conversation and tasks being undertaken by our volunteers were: Two lasers have been adopted by the club and are now available for members to use Contact RC Training for details. The beer cooler installation is ongoing, but let s face it we probably needn t worry about cooling it until this cold snap lets up. A commemorative plaque has been added to Gavin Adamson s Tree. Search continues for someone / extra helpers to help run the club shop and help make it more profitable / accessible to the membership. We are looking for someone who could assist with occasional holiday cover for the Assistant Treasurer / Bookkeeper. Please contact the Assistant Treasurer. Boat Storage - Boats with no member owners have been identified and dealt with, the next task area is those boats with members who have not moved in a long time. If you own a boat which has not been used for a long time then please contact the Harbour Master. Club activity so far through the winter has been up on last year. Accounts to the end of December are looking good and continuing as forecast at the AGM. Training Update Although the current weather conditions and daylight hours prevent all but the most hardy (or deranged) of our intrepid sailors from venturing onto the water, this does not mean that we should not be utilising this time perfecting our racing techniques. Dalgety Bay Sailing Club is recognised by the RYA as a Champion Club this allows us certain benefits that you should be aware of and all the information which can be found at the below web page. It is well worth a look over http://www.rya.org.uk/programmes/volvoryachampionclubs/pages/default.aspx

Hogmanay 2009 Hogmanay celebrations came back to Dalgety Bay Sailing Club with a bang and an occasional pop last month. Forthcoming Events The event was very well attended with at least 90 people joining in with the revelry and enjoying the convivial Spirit of Hogmanay that only Scotland can provide. Food came in the guise of Chilli and jacket potatoes provided by a stressed Rear Commodore Training, the two-piece band played a medley of old and new and continued to delight up to 1am in the morning. January: Quiz Night First Quiz of the Year Thursday 28 th Jan Start 8pm Entry Fee : 3.00 a team As the bells sounded for midnight it was accompanied by the loud popping of champagne corks and a firework display that dwarfed the display provided by Auld Reekie in the distance. One of Matt s best ideas were the inclusion of the Chinese lanterns that, due to the cold air, eventually shot up and over the Forth nearly becoming a danger to air traffic control on the far bank. The evening finished at 1pm with the traditional tune and crossed handshakes of Auld Lang Syne. The snowy vista and icy conditions not denting the warmth of feeling as the revellers slipped and slid (and maybe some tottered) their way home. Many thanks to all who helped make the evening a must for this year s calendar.
