Even with her cruising sails and our two boys having to be coaxed down from the spreaders so we could start, we won our first J Fest Northwest. She was also third overall and third in her class in the Seattle Yacht Clubs prestigious tri-island series. No doubt about it - Grace is Fast! But our love has and continues to be cruising. We've cruised on Grace from top to bottom of the Salish Sea. From Olympia to Desolation Sound, she has been a solid comfortable and stable boat. She's safe in big seas and always reliable. Easy enough for two to fly the small kite with the snuffer and lots of fun up wind. We added a third house battery and a TV with DVD player early in Grace's career. So there have been lots of cozy evenings in the salon. The European marine head, plumbing, hot water heater, bilge pump and AC electric have all been replaced with local high quality parts that are easily serviced. We also added a sea strainer to the salt water intake on the engine for those times you suck in some eel grass when you are up north. Because Grace is so fast, we find ourselves sailing more. Why motor in 6 knots of breeze when you can almost make 6 knots sailing? On some cruises we have found ourselves having to be reminded to start the motor just to charge the batteries. We added an electric main halyard winch a few years ago and that has meant even more time sailing and less motoring. Like her famous stable mates, the J/109 and J/133, the J/122 promises to be an IRC-friendly racer/cruiser with competitive performance, a simple and balanced sail plan, high quality SCRIMP construction as well as complete accommodations. The J/122, developed with and built by J/Europe in France, is distinguished by the high aspect, non-overlapping sailplan (maximum size 110 percent jib) which simplifies the deck plan and sail selection. The setback headstay with furler are recessed into the deck to maximize the jib luff length while retaining the convenience of jib furling from the cockpit. When combined with the simplicity of an asymmetric spinnaker flown from a retractable carbon bow sprit, it?s easy to achieve near peak performance with minimal crew effort. The J/122 cockpit is ergonomically optimized with a floor mounted traveler, below decks mainsheet system, offshore seatbacks, remote backstay adjuster and a removable transom dock box option that allows one to convert from race mode to cruise mode in a matter of minutes.
