Lanciano is situated on the hills of the Sangro Valley and has very ancient origins: the archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic, and the recent excavations have brought to light the remains of Anxanum, a large, 12th-century housing estate. B.C. which is one of the oldest in Abruzzo. Anxanum is also cited as a Roman station by Giulio Cesare. From 1154 the town was called "Lanzano" and formed the districts of Lancianovecchia, Sacca on the hill of Seiva, Civitanova and Borgo sul Colle Pietroso. The maximum splendor of Lanciano was reached between the 12th and 15th centuries thanks to the development of the fairs, the Roman "Nundinae", held in the early months of the year on the hill of Selva, where the Temple dedicated to Apollo was built. After the Middle Ages, fairs have an ever-growing development that reaches the top in the 15th century. Merchants from all over the world came to the trade fairs and very frequent exchanges with Venice and with Ragusa. The first signs of crisis began, however, in the very period of the city's greatest development due to the French and Spanish struggles that undermined the development of the city itself. For this reason, Ferdinand of Aragon, in 1515, established through an edict that in Lanciano merchants of any origin or religion would enjoy great protection and that they would be "safe and secure" throughout the fair. In fact, during the fairs, the Mastrogiurato was elected, who was responsible for enforcing the "Peace of Fair". It was with the seventeenth century that King Philip III removed this privilege to the merchants and provoked a gradual decay of the city. With the 17th century, Lanciano, it became the feud of Duke Alessandro Pallavicino and then, later on, of the Marquis of Avalos del Vasto. It was with the twentieth century that the town grew up and participated in the Second World War. Today, Lanciano is a renowned national and international exhibition center. Lanciano is also the city of the first Eucharistic Miracle recognized by the Church in the seventh century.
Lanciano is an Italian city of 35175 people in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, the most important center of the Val di Sangro and a pilgrimage destination thanks to its Eucharistic miracle. The city of ancient tradition was the capital of Frentani, the Roman town hall and then the district capital during the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. It was named after the city in 1212 by the will of Frederick II of Swabia. He is also awarded a gold medal for military service. The Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano would have happened in the Abruzzo town of Lanciano in the first half of the eighth century: while a priest was celebrating Mass, at the time of consecration the host and wine would become flesh and blood. The relics of the phenomenon, the best known of its kind [1], are preserved inside the church of San Francesco, in the historic Borgo district. Basilica of Our Lady of the Bridge The Basilica of the Madonna del Ponte is thus called because it is built on a threelane bridge (the Diocletian's Bridge), in Plebiscito square. In 1088, restoring the Bridge after an earthquake, there was an ancient statue of the Madonna and the Child: the event, considered miraculous, brought this icon back to Madonna del Ponte and a chapel was built to guard it on the bridge itself. Probably, the statue is an ancient Byzantine icon, walled in a bridge arch in the 8th century to subvert it to iconoclasts. The growing popular devotion led to the construction of a chapel, which covered the bridge entirely, at the end of the 14th century. In 1513 the bridge was also expanded, building the current Corridor. The visible church today was built between 1785 and 1788. The facade was started in 1800 and remained unfinished in the upper part. To the left of the church rises the Torre Campanaria, 37 meters high, between 1610 and 1614. The Basilica is neoclassical, although some decorations betray rococo's residues of rococo. The interior is made up of a single nave, surrounded by giant Corinthian halfcolonies. The vault and domes are frescoed. In a niche in the center of the main altar there is the statue of Our Lady of the Bridge.
