As well as the competitions there is a lot of socialising and general dancing, which means that even if you are not competing, you can have a good time. Below: Nahleen, Doreen, Irene, and Bev. Below: Tony Snow catches up with Marcia and Karen from Invercargill. Below right: Sue and Ian rockin away to the great music played by DJ Nigel. One of the fun things to do at Nationals is to take part in one of the massive tunnels that are formed to welcome back competitors after their two dances have finished. Here Debbie and Mike look happy to be welcomed back to the Gold Coast tables. If there are no Gold Coast competitors in a section, no worry, just join someone else s tunnel. If you got hungry at Wanganui, you could visit the township nearby, and try out the restaurants or fast food outlets. Alternatively, you could go out the back door and try the pie cart selling chips and hot dogs. Or, if you waited, the Wanganui ladies brought around a trolley selling sandwiches and cakes. BIG JOE TURNER SHAKES RATTLES AND ROLLS He was among the first to mix R&B with boogiewoogie, resulting in jump blues - a style that presaged the birth of rock and roll. Indeed, Turner s original recording of Shake, Rattle and Roll, cut for Atlantic Records in 1954, remains one of the cornerstones numbers of the rock and roll revolution. Turner was a huge man with a husky, booming voice who could out-shout a big band without amplification while projecting clarity and control. He was born in Kansas City, and it was in that freewheeling city s jumping nightspots that he began his career as a bartender and singer. Kansas City was, in those days, a hotbed of jazz and blues whose many clubs rocked around the proverbial clock. As a young man, Turner worked at many of these joints - including the Backbiter s Club and the Sunset Café - as a bouncer, bartender and singer. It was here that he hooked up with pianist Pete Johnson. Turner and Johnson helped popularize boogie-woogie and jump blues in the late Thirties and early Forties. Everybody was singing slow blues when I was young, Turner told Rhino s James Austin, and I thought I d put a beat to it and sing it up-tempo. Crowds would clamour for Johnson to play some boogie Make em jump! - and he d oblige. The songs Turner sang (and sometimes wrote) were often risqué, employing coy slang words and metaphors for sex in ways that would amuse a partying club crowd, but that limited his record sales. So it was Bill Haley who sold more copies of Shake Rattle and Roll with a sanitised version that the radio stations were comfortable to play. But even Bill Haley and the record company missed the hidden meaning in one verse. Turner s hits included Chains Of Love, covered by Pat Boone, Chill Is On and Sweet Sixteen, later associated with BB King. Big Joe Turner continued to score R&B smashes through 1956 with "Well All Right," "Flip, Flop and Fly," "Hide and Seek," the two-sided "Morning, Noon and Night" - "The Chicken and the Hawk (Up, Up and Away)," "Corrine Corrina" (a moderate pop hit), and "Lipstick, Powder and Paint."
