Each year, damage prevention stakeholders across the U.S. and Canada celebrate 8/11 Day, or 8-11 on the calendar, with creative and far-reaching campaigns reminding the public and professionals about the importance of digging safely. Whether your organization already has events and outreach planned or is still looking for ideas, read on for Communications Plan tools that can easily be used to spread the 811 message around 8/11 Day this year and to hear about some exciting initiatives with national reach! Pacific Gas & Electric to Ring the Closing Bell of the NYSE with 811 on 8/11! On Aug. 11, PG&E will ring the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange in promotion of the call before you dig phone number. Featured on the NYSE website and on television networks such as CNBC, Bloomberg TV and Fox Business News, reaching millions of viewers worldwide, this symbolic effort brings national attention to the importance of calling before digging to a demographic not often targeted with this critical safety message. You can watch the ringing of the closing bell live on Aug.11 at https://www.nyse.com/bell! Look for 811 at the Ballpark on 8/11! For the second consecutive year, a coalition of damage prevention stakeholders will partner to place 811 signage behind home plate at select Major League Baseball parks on 8/11 Day. The signage, which features the full Know what s below. Call 811 before you dig. logo/tagline combination, will be visible for one half-inning in each ballpark to viewers TV markets for the following games: New York Yankees at Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox at Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers at Minnesota Twins and Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals. This initiative will reach millions of viewers, including in five of the top 10 TV markets in the country (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Dallas/ Ft. Worth), and possibly lead to national exposure on ESPN, Fox Sports 1 and MLB Network if key plays occur during the 811-sponsored half innings. Kentucky Speedway s 811 Takeover From July 9-11, the call before you dig number was top of mind for thousands of racing fans who attended weekend events at Kentucky Speedway during the 811 Takeover. In addition to prominent 811 signage in the stands, the logo was also put on display by NASCAR Truck Series driver Mason Mingus. Mingus No. 15 Call 811 Before You Dig Chevrolet Silverado continually sports 811, but additional 811 signage around his team s area at Kentucky Speedway further bolstered the safe digging message. No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion driver Joey Logano s car also sported the 811 logo during the weekend s Sprint Cup Series race to remind fans to call before digging, as it will for three more races this year. The Kentucky Speedway 811 takeover was made possible by sponsors Alabama 811, Duke Energy, Indiana 811, Kentucky 811, the Ohio Utilities Protection Service, the Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Tallgrass Energy and Team Construction. You can remind your social media followers about the importance of 811 and tell them to tune in to additional 811 NASCAR races this year by using new racing-themed infographics available in the 811 Toolkit on CommonGroundAlliance.com. Ontario Regional CGA Releases 2014 DIRT Report By Lori O Doherty, ORCGA, meeting, events and program manager The annual DIRT report provides a summary and analyses of the known facility events submitted for the prior year, and as additional years of data are continuously collected, also provides the ability to monitor trends over time. The 2014 ORCGA DIRT report focuses on the data gathered throughout Ontario relative to the three year period between 2012 and 2014. Gathering information about facility events gives the ORCGA the opportunity to analyze the contributing factors, recurring trends and issues facing the industry, region and province. This information can be helpful for all stakeholders to use as a benchmark for their damage prevention performance. Based on the results and trends presented throughout the report, the ORCGA identifies potential educational opportunities to meet the overall goals of reducing damages and increasing safety for all stakeholders. The 2014 ORCGA DIRT report (Version 8.0) was released in June 2015. The key highlights of the report are as follows: The information can be helpful for all stakeholders to use as a benchmark for their damage prevention performance. In 2014, the Hoe/Trencher Group continued to account for the largestvolume of events. Efforts should be made by reporting groups to minimize listing equipment as Other in order to improve the completeness of data. Facility Events by Root Cause Category illustrates that the most common causes of events were a result of Excavation Practices Before Not Sufficient and/or Notification Not Made. Emphasis should be made to reduce events due to these root causes by providing targeted outreach/educational information to excavators. The ORCGA 2014 DIRT Report also contains testimonials from companies using the DIRT tool, case studies of events and highlights the ORCGA Excavators of the Year. REGIONAL PARTNER CORNER A Report from the New Jersey Common Ground Alliance Submitted by Jim Tarleton, New Jersey Natural Gas The New Jersey Common Ground Alliance was originally organized as a steering committee in early 2005 and held its first official meeting on Nov. 2, 2005 as NJCGA. The organization is modeled after the national Common Ground Alliance. We operate through consensus and have a board of directors that is comprised of a chairperson, vice chair, secretary, past chair, stakeholder chairs and members-at-large. As of April 2015, there are over 200 members representing a range of stakeholder groups, including: excavators, locators, electric, oil/gas, water, communications, regulatory/government and planning/design. Our mission statement is as follows: Through shared responsibility among stakeholders, New Jersey Common Ground Alliance works to reduce damages to the New Jersey Infrastructure, ensuring public safety, education, environmental protection, and the integrity of services by promoting effective damage prevention practices. The NJCGA normally has four regular meetings during the year at rotating venues across the state to offer the opportunity for increased stakeholder participation. These half-day meetings normally attract 50 attendees who either present about their company projects or discuss ticket concerns and solutions. The main goal of the quarterly meetings is to provide a venue where stakeholders can meet, educate and work to improve processes within New Jersey. The NJCGA is in its fifth year of facilitating contractor excavation safety training events throughout the state. New Jersey facility operators, including Atlantic City Electric, Elizabethtown Gas, Jersey Central Power & Light, New Jersey Natural Gas, Public Service Electric and Gas, South Jersey Gas, United Water, Verizon and New Jersey One Call Center host a series of meetings throughout the state to educate and promote the importance of underground utility safety. This year, the NJCGA saw a 27 percent increase in registration and a 13 percent increase in meeting attendance. These programs are well received by all. 811 Bike Supports Veterans The 811 Bike teamed up with Miss Utility of Delmarva and Miss Utility of Maryland/D.C. to promote digging safety at the annual Endeavor Lodge #17 s Car, Truck, Motorcycle and Tractor show in Milton, Del. This annual event benefits Home of the Brave, an organization that reduces homelessness among military veterans. 811 Day at the North Dakota State Fair July 24 was 811 Day at the North Dakota State Fair, featuring the 811 Bike and an 811 pick-up truck. The first 811 people into the tent received a free T-shirt, and North Dakota One Call provided hydrovacing and line locating demonstrations. PHMSA s Washington D.C. Metro Advertising Catches Eyes The U.S. Department of Transportation s Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) took over the D.C. Metro s Navy Yard station with 811 call before you dig advertising from July 6 through Aug. 2. As of mid-july, PHMSA was also still getting mileage out of its small April campaign with the Metro which included ads on Metro trains and buses. Oregon Has an 811 Cement Truck, Too! Out west in Oregon, Bill Walker of Cascade Natural Gas arranged to have a Knife River cement truck wrapped with the 811 logo! 811 cement trucks are also on the road in Indiana. Washington 811 to Celebrate 8/11 Day all Weekend Long WA811 is sponsoring an appearance of the 811 Bike at the annual charity golf event hosted by Century Link in support of Toys for Tots on Aug. 7, then will host the 811 Bike at a Bravo Environmental barbecue on 8/11 Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Starting at 6 p.m. on 8/11 Day, WA811 and the Tacoma Rainiers will host 811 night at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Wash. The 811 Bike will be on display once again at the front entrance to the stadium, and the first 1,000 attendees will receive an 811 T-shirt. 811 guests will enjoy a free night at the game, food and an 811 T-shirt courtesy of 8 Update/July 2015

WA811. In addition to special 811 giveaways and activities, this night will also include the 811 Bike Photo Booth. Through the magic of special photo trickery, participants will receive a picture of themselves, appearing to sit atop the 811 Bike, zooming down the highway. One Call Concepts Partners with Hunting in the Sticks The third season of the Pursuit Channel s Hunting in the Sticks TV show is just underway and One Call Concepts along with its partners in damage prevention are helping sponsor this fun hunting and fishing show. New episodes air Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. EST on the Pursuit Channel. Dig Safely New York Partners with Landscapers and Regional Events to spread the 811 Message For the second consecutive year, Dig Safely New York, Inc. (DSNY) partnered with local nurseries and landscaping organizations throughout its service area to bring awareness to safe digging during June s National Safety Month. More than 55 nurseries partnered with DSNY by hanging a safety message banner, wearing specially printed DSNY landscaping T-shirts each Monday in June, as well as handing out DSNY 9 Update/July 2015 branded Forget-Me-Not seed packets to its customers for free. Dig Safely New York began this partnership in 2014, but more than doubled the number of partners in 2015. Click here for more info. To bring general brand awareness to the public, DSNY is throwing aside the banner in favor of its painted logo program. A 16 x24 DSNY logo is painted on fields and/ or asphalt at events to bring attention to the call center s name. What began as a way to leverage existing sponsorships at events expanded into its own program where county fair associations and organizations that host large events can sign up to receive a $100 sponsorship from DSNY just to have its logo painted in a highly visible area at their events. This sponsorship offer attracts many organizations because the painted logo takes up no space that organizations have to accommodate (people can walk on it after it is painted), they receive a small stipend for displaying the safety message and it develops a great partnership between the organizations and Dig Safely New York. In 2015, Dig Safely New York s painted logo will be visible at more than 10 events throughout the state for an estimated 350,000 impressions. Nebraska 811 s Pirate Adventure The Nebraska One Call Board of Directors invited school age children on an educational journey about the importance of digging safely using CGA s Pirate Video and curriculum. Elementary age classes and groups were invited to participate in a poster contest after viewing the DVD. Posters depicting their interpretation of the 811 message were entered to win an onsite educational presentation in which students helped plant a tree for their school or community.
