Game 8 Women s Basketball 2010-11 Sam Houston at Oklahoma BEARKAT WOMEN OFF TO BEST SEASON START SINCE 1993-94 With five victories in their first seven games, the Sam Houston women s basketball team is off to its best start in 17 seasons. Not since 1993-94 has an SHSU women s basketball season opened a year 5-2. Only two of those five victories have come at home. The other three were at neutral sites as Sam Houston has posted runner-up team finishes in both the Ole Miss Magnolia Classic and the Texas Tech World Vision Classic. Sam Houston s losses came at the hands of an SEC and a Big 12 opponent, falling by nine at Ole Miss and 13 at Texas Tech. Sophomore Britni Martin leads Sam Houston with 18.9 points per game. She came within one point of the all-time single game school scoring record with 37 points in a 73-59 victory over Charleston Southern after totaling 34 points in a 73-59 win against American University. Sophomores Sequeena Thomas and Chanice Smith also are averaging in double figures, scoring 13.2 points and 11.9, respectively. A young squad with only one senior, Sam Houston is getting 25.2 points per game from its bench. LOOKING BACK AT 2009-10 Sam Houston State s 2009-10 women s basketball season was the most successful campaign for the Bearkats in a decade. The Bearkat women posted their best Southland Conference finish and record since 1999-2000, post double digit season wins for the first time in 10 years and made their first Southland Conference postseason appearance since 2004. Sam Houston placed fifth in the Southland Conference West Division with an 8-8 league mark. The Kats lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round of the tournament in Katy. OUTLOOK FOR 2010-11 With a young squad of talented players, the Bearkat women hope to continue their upward climb in the Southland race. But to do so, Sam Houston must replace players who accounted for 48.8 of the team s 71.7 points per game during an 11-18 season. Gone are three four-year starters who all averaged in double figures last year. Two, All-Southland guard Brittany Brooks and forward Whitney Smith, ended their careers ranked among the top 10 in women s career scoring at SHSU. Guard Ray Alexander stands No. 21 in all-time scoring and No. 6 in career assists in the Kat record book. But head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols looks to reload with an exciting group of returning players and another quality recruiting class. Sophomore Clarke Davis is team s lone returning starter. The 6-0 forward earned a starting role in pre-conference play and averaged 4.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in league action. Chanice Smith, a 5-9 sophomore guard, averaged 19.5 minutes and 8.7 points off the bench in 2009-10. Other returning players from last year s squad include 5-6 junior guard Khamra Echols (4.9 points), 6-0 sophomore forward Sequeena Thomas (3.6 points) and 6-2 junior post LaTisha Morgan (1.1 points). Sophomore Britni Martin, a 6-0 guard who was a medical redshirt in 2009-10, also returns. Two years ago, Martin was the first Sam Houston freshman woman to score in double figures since Shayla Teague in 1995. Posting a 10.5 average in 2009, Martin became only the fifth freshman in Bearkat women s basketball history to score in double digits. Four freshmen and one junior college transfer bring needed height, quickness and scoring ability. The newcomers include 5-6 junior guard Devin Wombles from Pleasant Hill, Ill. and freshmen 5-10 Nyha Carter from League City, 5-7 Jasmine Johnson from Missouri City, 6-1 Ashton Jones from Houston Cy Woods and 6-1 Zoe Tucker from Houston Cy Creek. We re much more athletic this year and look to be improved in all phases of the game, Nichols said. The girls have demonstrated a great work ethic during the off-season and everyone is determined to continue to raise our stature in the Southland Conference. www.gobearkats.com November 12 vs. Southeast Missouri# W 60-51 13 at Mississippi# L 60-69 17 Centenary W 83-55 23 North Texas W 90-76 26 vs. American## W 73-59 27 vs. Charleston So.## W 73-59 28 at Texas Tech## L 52-65 December 1 at Oklahoma 7 p.m. 6 Grambling 6:30 p.m. 8 at North Texas 7 p.m. 11 Houston Baptist 1 p.m. 19 at TCU 5 p.m. 28 at UT-Pan American 7 p.m. January 2 at Texas 2 p.m. 8 UTSA* 2 p.m. 12 at UT-Arlington* 7 p.m. 15 at Nicholls* 3:30 p.m. 19 Texas St.* 6:30 p.m. 22 A&M-Corpus Christi* 2 p.m. 26 at Stephen F. HEAD COACH BRENDA WELCH-NICHOLS In her fourth season as Sam Houston women s basketball coach in 2009-10, Brenda Welch-Nichols directed the Bearkats to their best Southland Conference record and their highest league finish in a decade. Sam Houston placed fifth in the Southland Conference West Division with an 8-8 league mark and earned their first Southland post-season tournament berth since 2004. For the season, the Bearkat women posted double digit victories for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. One year earlier, in I2008-09, Sam Houston ranked among the top 15 Most Improved women s programs at the NCAA Division I level. The climb back into contention in the league race is the result of a fouryear recruiting effort by the Sam Houston State graduate who ranks as one of the top scorers in school history. Nichols, a 1988 Sam Houston graduate who earned All-Southland Conference honors in both 1987 and 1988, returned to her alma mater as head coach in 2006-07. Each season our level of play has improved. Last year we were determined to fight our way into the tournament and we did it, the coach said. We re not satisfied with just getting into the tournament. We want to be a factor in the Southland race every year. Nichols, a 1988 Sam Houston graduate and one of the school s all-time top scorers who earned All-Southland Conference honors in both 1987 and 1988, is on a mission. My love and desire to see Sam Houston State succeed attracted me to this job, said Nichols. Sam Houston helped mold me as a person, and I also met my husband here. Sam Houston has done a lot for me. I feel indebted to give back to a school that has given me so much. I am passionate about the job and about being the head coach at Sam Houston. Prior to returning to Huntsville, Nichols spent four seasons as the head coach at Mercer University in Macon, GA where she constructed a turnaround of the Bear program. In her final year in Macon, in 2005-06, the Bears reached the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun conference tournament, losing by five points in overtime after upsetting number three seed East Tennessee State in the first round. The Bears reached the Atlantic Sun tournament in each of Nichols four seasons at Mercer and were 41-35 in league play. Her last year at Mercer, in non-league action, the Bears beat teams such as Pacific, Southern Mississippi, and New Orleans. Nichols served as an assistant coach at South Alabama and Memphis and was head coach at Okaloosa-Walton Community College and Western Texas Junior College. She spent three seasons at Okaloosa-Walton Community College, finishing with a 63-27 record and two second-place finishes in the Panhandle Conference. Her 1998-99 squad earned a national ranking as high as fifth and a trip to the NJCAA Regional Tournament. Her first head coaching job was at the school where she began her college playing career, Western Texas. Nichols spent two seasons as head coach there before moving to Okaloosa-Walton. Nichols first collegiate assistant coaching job came at Pensacola Junior College, ironically during the same time that former Sam Houston men s basketball head coach Bob Marlin was men s coach there, where she served as an assistant for four seasons and helped lead the team to three conference titles in her four years there. While working at Pensacola Junior College, Nichols completed a master s degree in health, leisure and sports/physical education at the University of West Florida in 1992. The Jennings, La., native is the daughter of Dan and Clara Welch, who reside in Tulsa, Okla. Coach Nichols is married to Barry Nichols. The couple has two sons, Brady and Brock and a daughter, Brelee.
