Nitkowski on the call...tomorrow s season finale will be on FSKC with Ryan Lefebvre and Rex Hudler in the booth...the pre and postgame show, Royals Live, will be hosted by Joel Goldberg and Royals Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery. Royals vs. Indians Last night was KC s sixth consecutive loss to the Tribe this year and dropped the season mark to 5-12, including a 1-9 mark in Cleveland...the Royals trail the all-time series by a 321-344 margin, but hold a 172-156 advantage in Kansas City, 160-144 in The K. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 5/6 @ Clev L, 1-7 Salazar Ventura 13,587 5/7 @ Clev W, 7-0 Kennedy Anderson 17,302 5/8 @ Clev L, 4-5 Tomlin Volquez 14,463 6/2 @ Clev L, 4-5 Hunter Soria 11,131 6/3 @ Clev L, 1-6 Salazar Volquez 24,753 6/4 @ Clev L, 1-7 Tomlin Kennedy 23,258 6/5 @ Clev L, 0-7 Kluber Young 16,747 6/13 KC W, 2-1 Volquez Carrasco 31,269 6/14 KC W, 3-2 Soria Shaw 29,293 6/15 KC W, 9-4 Kennedy Kluber 33,546 7/18 KC W, 7-3 Hochevar Shaw 38,042 7/19 KC L, 3-7 Salazar Flynn 31,144 7/20 KC L, 4-11 Carrasco Kennedy 33,455 9/20 @ Clev L, 1-2 Miller Flynn 13,623 9/21 @ Clev L, 3-4 Kluber Kennedy 13,888 9/22 @ Clev L, 2-5 Otero Gee 15,253 9/30 KC L, 2-7 Merritt Ventura 24,741 10/1 KC 10/2 KC TRIBE TROUBLES CONTINUE--A four-run third inning turned out to be more than enough for the Indians last night as they posted a 7-2 decision over the Royals, Kansas City s sixth straight loss to the Tribe...taking a 1-0 lead into the third, Yordano Ventura ran into trouble allowing four runs on four hits and walk in that frame...he followed with three more shutout innings, including an impressive escape in the sixth inning when ran into a second and third, none-out jam but still kept Cleveland off the board...meanwhile, the Royals jumped on starter Ryan Merritt with three of the first four hitters collecting hits, but an inning ending double play saw KC plate only one run and then Merritt last 13 men he faced...all told, Cleveland pitching retired 20 straight Royals before Hunter Dozier singled in the eighth and eventually scored...the Tribe s Carlos Santana and Francisco Lindor were once again a pair of Royal-pains, combining for five hits, including the cycle between them, and five RBI. WINNING SEASON STILL ON LINE--Though a third straight trip to the postseason is not in the cards, the Royals still have a goal to attain over the final two days...at least one more victory would give Kansas City a fourth straight campaign with a winning record, something that hasn t been done here since a sixyear stretch from 1975-1980, when KC combined those years for a.572 winning pct. (557-416)...included in that six-year span were the first postseason experiences for the franchise, playing in the ALCS in 1976, 77, 78 and 80, winning the American League crown in the final year of the streak...kansas City enters tonight 351-294 record for the last four seasons for a.544 winning pct., which is currently the best mark among all American League teams since the start of 2013, when KC finished at 86-76...the Royals then followed by consecutive American League title years with an 89-73 mark in 2014 and a loss in the Fall Classic to the Giants, and then last year s historical 95-67 ledger culminating in the World Series crown. THE LAND OF HOZ--Eric Hosmer drove home Kansas City s first run last night, upping his career best RBI total to 104, the 19th best RBI season in team history... with two games to play, Hosmer could join the likes of Carlos Beltran (2002) and Bo Jackson (1989) in the 17th best slot with 105...this is the first time the Royals have had a first baseman drive at least 100 runs in a season since Mike Sweeney knocked home 103 of his 144 in 2000 while playing first base...the only other full-time first sacker with at least 100-RBI in a season for the Royals was John Mayberry, who did it on three occasion...with his career best 25 home runs, Hosmer is only the third lefthanded hitting Royal to achieve at least that many in a season, joining George Brett (1983 & 85) and John Mayberry (1973-73, 75) OVER 2.5 MILLION SERVED--With today s crowd, the Royals will exceed the 2.5 million mark in home attendance for just the second time in franchise history, coming on the heels of the first time when the club netted 2,708,549 fans during what would up a World Series winning campaign...coupled with last season, Kansas City has drawn 5,208,217 fans into Kauffman Stadium with two dates remaining in the 2016 campaign, for a per game average of 32,551...prior to last year, the Royals had not eclipsed the two million total in home attendance since 1991 when the club drew 2,161,537...prior to last season, the one-year attendance record was 2,477,700 established in 1989. TODAY S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Trevor Bauer (12-8, 4.26) vs. RHP Edinson Volquez (10-11, 5.37) 2016 2015 Career 2016 2015 Career Trevor Bauer vs. Royals - 1-1 1-2 Major League Record 12-8 (4.26 ERA) 11-12 30-32 Edinson Volquez vs. Indians 1-2 1-2 3-6 Major League Record 10-11 (5.37 ERA) 13-9 89-79 EDINSON VOLQUEZ makes his career-high 34th start, 252nd starting assignment and 259th all-time outing he takes the hill for the sixth time vs. Cleveland this year and 13th in his career the 33-year-old right-hander is in the second year of a two-year deal that includes a mutual option for 2017. THIRD INNING NOT TOO CHARMING--Staked to a 7-0 lead, Edinson couldn t get through the third last Sunday afternoon in Detroit, winding up with a no-decision in a 12-9 KC win...he held the Tigers scoreless on two hits for two innings, but then seven of the final eight hitters he faced reached safely...things got away from him with one out in the third as three-straight reached before a Victor Martinez grand slam...volquez departed after loading the bases for a second time in the inning, issuing back-to-back two-out walks...it was his second-shortest outing of the season, behind his 1.0-plus in a 13-4 loss to Houston on June 24...following that start, Edinson recorded quality starts in four of his next five appearances...he s looking for his first win since August 25 at Miami (5-2) today. AMONG THE MOST DURABLE--Edinson is making his 34th start of the season, tying him with David Price and Madison Bumgarner for the most in the Majors...he will likely finish tied for second as Price is scheduled to pitch in tomorrow s season finale for the Red Sox...since 2012, Volquez has made at least 31 starts each year, with his 161 assignments in that span tying him for fifth in the Majors, behind James Shields (166), R.A. Dickey, Max Scherzer and Madison Bumgarner (163). NOVENTA--Today is Volky s seventh and final shot in 2016 at his 90th career win, which would make him the 16th Dominican-born pitcher to reach that mark he s tied with former Royal, Jose Lima (2003, 2005), who won 89 games over 13 Major League seasons Edinson has won at least 10 games in four of the last five seasons, including each of the last three he recorded a career-high 17 wins with Cincinnati in 2008. PLAY IT AGAIN, EDDIE--Edinson makes his sixth start of the year vs. Cleveland, matching the club record for most starts in a season vs. one team...the only other KC hurler to face the Tribe six times was Gil Meche in 2008...Volky is 1-2 with a 3.73 ERA (13 ER in 31.1 IP) this season and 3-6 with a 5.84 ERA in 12 career outings. LOOKING FOR HOME WIN--Volquez is looking for his first win at Kauffman Stadium since July 9, when he topped Seattle, 5-3...since the All-Star break, he s gone 0-1 with a 6.63 ERA, after assembling a 6-3 mark before the break...in his time with the Royals, Edinson is 14-8 with a 4.32 ERA at The K...he has a career mark of 48-39 with a 4.21 ERA and a.247 opponents average in 132 outings (128 starts) at his various home parks.
