INTRODUCTION Located in the Caribbean Sea, the Honduran island of Roatan is surrounded by crystal clear waters that are calm and warm. It is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world, where you can find walls that drop off to hundreds of meters only a few swim strokes away from white sandy beaches. A popular diving destination since the 70 s, Roatan has all the necessary infrastructure for hosting this world-class event and to provide for the necessary comfort and safety to all participants and staff. ROATAN, BAY ISLANDS HOW TO GET TO ROATAN The island is served by the Juan Manuel Gálvez Roatán International Airport which has direct international flights from Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, and Houston (2 hours flight connection) via American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and Avianca Airlines respectively, as well as domestic connections for international flights arriving into mainland Honduran cities including the capital Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and San Salvador, El Salvador (30 minutes flight). Air Europe have direct fligths to San Pedro Sula from Barajas Airport, Madrid. Canadian carriers Sunwing Airlines (via Toronto) and WestJet also serve the Island with direct charter flights. A BIT OF BACKGROUND INFORMATION Since we began to look into the process of organizing an international competition in Roatan, we started seeking for advice and expertise from AIDA International authorities and prominent freedivers. The first 5 editions of the Caribbean Cup (2013 to 2017) also the 2017 AIDA World Championship (attended by 96 athletes from 28 countries) organized by Roatan Freediving School & Training Center, were held in a warm atmosphere, with great conditions and the organization was able to satisfy the needs of all athletes, staff, spectators and sponsors. Since 2013 athletes from the 5 continents congregated yearly and 13 continental records and more than 100 national records were established; reaching important media outlets all over the world, such as CNN TV, CNN International, CNN en Español, Fox Sports Latinoamerica, Huffington post, Deeper Blue, Silverkris Magazine (Singapore Airlines), Acuadeus Magazine (France), Sun+ Magazine (UK), Scuba Diver Life (USA), The Inertia Magazine, Sportsub.net (Venezuela), Winsports Magazine (Colombia), Voice Magazine (Honduras), Radio W (Colombia), Prawno Apparel, Publimetro Magazine (Colombia), Centro de Actividades Subacuáticas (Venezuela) among others. In 2017, the AIDA WC was brosdcasted online by a submersible drone (Diveye) for first time in history, marking a new era in terms of safety and showing to spectators worldwide the beauty of this sport as never was done before; in addition to providing great exposure to our sponsors. Extra large banners were installed and promotional videos reproduced on large screens in the 3 international airports also on national TV, and diverse photo and video material it was disseminated in social networks. EVENT LOCATION West Bay is the beach where the event will take place. The diving platform will be located 3 minutes by boat from our headquarter, the San Simon Beach Club. SAN SIMON BEACH CLUB: Our headquarter in West Bay. This Beach Club has opened their doors to the freediving community and allowed us to use the club as the event headquarter. DIVE SITE SAN SIMON BEACH CLUB The site proposed for the competition is 0.70 m from shore (N 16 16 577 -W-86 36 365 ), located in front of West Bay Beach and within 3 minutes by boat from our headquarter at San Simon Beach Club. Two moorings are installed permanently on a large submerged sand patch, at a depth of 189 meters (620 feet). DEEP DOWN (DIVE PLATFORM) Deep Down is a 12 x 12 feet platform, with capacity to comfortably host up to 15 people. Built and designed sepcifically for freedive training and competitions, with an integrated counterballast system, sonar device, great buoyancy and stability. This platform will have one official line and three warm-up lines. TRANSFERS AND TRANSPORTATION NOTE: This platform is for the exclusive use of competitors and staff. A transfer boat with a capacity of up to 15 people will be permanently available to ferry competitors, judges and staff from shore to the competition catamaran. (3 minutes boat ride) One additional boat will be permanently by the dive platform for the exclusive use of emergency evacuation. CARIBBEAN CUP 2018 9/14
SAFETY AND MEDICAL PROTOCOLS WE WILL HAVE 6 Experienced, advanced life support trained safety divers per competition line. 1 Doctor/medic per competition line. 1 Safety scuba diver on site for counterbalance system backup. 2 Paramedics provided by Roatan Red Cross. Traditional counter balance system capable of 2+m/s assisted ascent. 1 Fast evacuation boat capable of making the beach in 3 minutes. 1 Fully equipped ambulance on standby with 15 minute drive to advanced medical center and decompression chamber. 1 High resolution sonar per competition line. ENTRY FEE The entry fee is US$ 750 for the first 20 competitors who confirm their participation. For those who confirm after the first 20 competitors the entry fee is US $850.
