KOZ Monthly Outdoor Training OCTOBER: Archery 7:30 Leader Meeting and Prayer time. This time is imperative and gives the leadership time to prepare their hearts for the meeting and time with the kids. Do not take this time lightly. Be on time, meet with God first. 8:30 Kids begin to arrive. Meet parents or guardian 8:45 Begin Meeting. All together say the American Pledge of Allegiance. BEGINNING YOUR MEETING WITH KOZ STRUCTURE KOZ Prayer: Lord, Thank you for making us strong and fierce warriors for you. We hunt, we fish and we share our faith with others. God Bless America. - Amen Work to get the boys to memorize the KOZ Prayer and use it as a tool for kids who have little experience in praying or are afraid to pray. (Before meals, before an adventure or other times as a reminder of who they are and what they represent). Leader s first questions/discussion. Outdoor Training LEADING INTO YOUR OUTDOORS SKILLS TRAINING Archery, one of the best KOZ months of the year. The bible has a lot of archery stories. Did you know that not only do people hunt with bows and arrows but they you can shoot a bow in the Olympics. Did you know that there are lots of schools that offer archery in the school? You can even get scholarships to college if you work hard at archery? Talk about : Have you shot a bow, what kind? Have you ever hunted with a bow? What things are different with bow hunting and rifle hunting? Do you know the different types of bows? The arrows that are used for hunting have different tips (broad heads, target, fixed and expandable) If you could bow hunt for anything in the world what would you choose? Leader s first questions/discussion: Scripture Training LEADING INTO YOUR HEART TRAINING This Month's Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:12, Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Leader s first questions/discussion, Bible training: Sometimes when we are young, your ages, it seems people might not take you serious. Some people might not think you can do things because you are too small or too young but you think you can. Maybe you KNOW you can. That can hurt your feelings or make you mad. What can you do to prove you are smart enough to do something? Do you think God will help you Do Hard Things If you behave, try to do your chores, go to church and all the things that you know help keep things calm around your house do you get along with people better? NOTE: Let them talk leave time between when you say something and they can speak let it be silent for a while if you have to they grow close in times of quiet allow Him to come BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING: IDEA TRAIL Things to do this month: STOP & BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING Teach Archery Basics (review history of archery, proper setup and pieces that make up the bow/arrow, prior to any shooting) Archery Targets (always do training on basics first, then start the action) using both 2D and 3D targets Review Longbow vs Recurve vs Compound vs Crossbows Bows (they all have their own benefits to the archer/hunter) Setup 3D Target Range (each 3D target area can be setup to simulate a different style of hunting; keep low score) Blood Trail Competition (leaders create two blood trails with ketchup that leads each team to same 3D Deer target race) Olympic Shot Challenge (Olympic targets are 70m or 76- yards and a difficult challenge with 25-35lbs bows, finish the day with this) *Note always add an EXTREME element to your KOZ day. Be creative. Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 2

FIELD NOTES: It s important to start EVERYONE out on the basics prior to shooting and a good review for experienced shooters too. This way it levels the playing field for those that have never shot a bow before. Someone just following the basics can quickly become proficient in archery if given the chance. Archery has many powerful parallels to our faith and how to get back to basics when life is getting off target. Show how successful self- disciple can be in life. Other places for good information and literature. Here are some sites where we have found great content of this lesson plan. The internet always has resources but be careful there are some bad sites with poor information. We do not endorse nor are we associated with any of the sites listed below. IMPORTANT: Use the opening/use the close, prayer/ sit spots and prayer cards. All groups should use the foundational structure of KOZ each month. The starting, the prayer, sit spots etc. as a common element to every meeting. Everything from sledding to swimming, hiking to fly fishing. The key to going off the trail is to keep the structure in place. Get them outside move their bodies, adventure and exploration. Keep it exciting, keep it real, be intentional about bringing them into a relationship with Christ. The Internet always has resources but be careful there are some bad sites with poor information. OUTDOOR TRAINING CONCLUSIONS Ask pointed questions on the outdoor skills they learned today. Drive home a point What was your favorite part of KOZ today? When you shoot an arrow and it is off target what are some things you can do to get it back in and closer to center? Tell us three things you learned today about archery and the outdoors? How important is it to practice shooting a bow? When you work hard on learning something like tracking, blood trails, archery does it help? Name the parts of a bow. Name the parts of an arrow. Where do you aim when you are hunting a deer and why? SCRIPTURE TRAINING AND HEART TAKEAWAY This Month's Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:12, Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Trail Map #1, 1 Timothy 4:12 Archery is an awesome sport for recreational shooting and for hunting. There are a few things that you have to keep in mind as you shoot a bow. You should keep your back straight and your pulling arm elbow up. You also need to make sure you do not torque the bow with your grip hand or lunge when you release the string. If you do all these things and you are steady as you release the arrow, you will usually hit your target. Also, as a young man, you can be just as accurate with a bow as an older man. Did you know that archery has some things in common with your walk with the Lord? You keep a few things in mind and you can walk with the Lord just like adults can. In 1 Timothy 4:12 God tells you to walk in such a way that no one looks down on you as a youth. As you walk with the Lord, watch closely your speech, your conduct, your faith and live in purity. Just like archery, if you are mindful of these things you'll see your lives hit the mark. If we keep these things in mind we'll hit the target and see God use us for His good purposes. RM Train Map #2, 1 Timothy 4:12 Ready Aim Fire and Pull are not phrases that you ll ever hear at an archery shoot. Why do you think that is? (Let the boys try and come up with some answers) Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 4

The main reason for this is that archery shooting is in a class of its own. Think of it this way; in skeet shooting we yell pull and that s shortly followed by the roaring blast of a shotgun where as archery shooting is quiet and meticulous. It can easily be related to a football game; skeet is like when the quarterback hands the ball off to his running back who plows through the defensive line with mass confusion and players bodies are being pushed and shoved in every direction. But archery is like the perfectly executed pass play where every player is in the proper position and the quarterback steps back and with just the right power, the perfect aim and with pinpoint accuracy the ball sails through the air and hits the open receiver right in the hands. Just like in today s scripture the sport of archery has a lot of moving parts and pieces! It takes a lot of work and a lot of practice but given the time anyone can do it. And given the time and practice you guys can come back and be the example to everyone else. Guys I want each of you to hear this verse again before we leave today and believe in yourselves. (Read the verse again) You guys can accomplish whatever God has in mind for you. Yes it might take a lot of time and work and you re going to have setbacks and struggles in your Christian walk but someday you ll look back to times like this and tell your KOZ group about the day you learned about shooting archery. Drive home a point Walk with the Lord as a youth, so much so that no one can look down on you Be an example to others in what you say and how you act. Be strong in your faith and live in purity Believe in yourself! No matter what your story is to this point you can be an example to others around you. In God s eyes your age isn t a factor. REMIND THEM: God has made you as an amazing person. Individual, special and unique. If you have not heard that for a while, I want to tell you that. I care about you, you matter to me. Talk to me if you need to talk. EACH MONTH: Teach the boys: BE STRONG - Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. He (Jesus) cares about you, you matter, your KOZ leaders care about you. He (Jesus) cares about you, you matter, your KOZ leaders care about you. THE SIT SPOT AND GOD SIT SPOT Purpose: Pass out a blank index card and pen. Tell them if they want you to pray for them or something going on to please write it on the card and you will pray for them this week. It is a private prayer between your leaders and them, they don't have to put their name on the card. If they don't have a prayer, tell them to just put their name on the cards. TO PONDER: Give the boys something to ponder, use the questions above, and ask them to go to a sit spot - let them stay while you prepare lunch (quietly without distracting the quiet moment) - (15-30 min.) SEND LEADERS TO SIT SPOTS! If a leader is not assigned a task have them also find a sit spot. It is good for the boys to see the adult leaders doing the same as they are asked to do. QUIET TIME IS ESSENTIAL. LUNCH & KOZ LEADERSHIP TAG GUIDANCE CALL BACK FOR LUNCH - While they are eating lunch WORK ON DOG TAGS Ask boys if they are working toward KOZ TAGS. Greenhorn, Coyote, LIT, HTL. This is a good time to teach this material. Print their cards and have them ready. Ask if any of the boys are new give them their KOZ Nation dog tag (the first one) GIVE A BOY HIS NAME IN KOZ We have found that giving boys a nickname is a huge tool for them. Giving a boy a New Name has been a game changer for many. A strong, fierce name is important. Jesus and His Father both gave new names. Ask prayerfully what name a boy should have. The leaders decide NOT the boys. It is an honor bestowed, even if funny. As you wait for the parents to arrive: Tell the boys you love them. That they are important. That if they have not prayed to ask Christ into their hearts to come talk to a KOZ HTL (ROMANS 10:9). If a kid wants to be baptized, have them talk to you about it - you can do it somewhere really cool! Perform a service project on site. Teach the boys to ALWAYS leave your area BETTER than it was when you got there. Parents arrive. Greet them and tell them how good their kid did. Tell the boys to invite a friend! Hand out literature or take home materials... A gallon plastic Zip lock bag with their name on it works great each month to collect their take home materials.
