Last Meeting with Delaware State Sept. 22, 2001 Liberty 34, Delaware State 7 Lynchburg, Va. (Williams Stadium) Liberty s most recent matchup with Delaware State contained a number of firsts. It marked the Flames first home game of the 2001 season, Liberty s first win of the year and both teams first game after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. Liberty scored the game s first 27 points before the Hornets Dashane Dennis got his team on the board. He notched a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown during the third quarter. The Flames offensive leaders included Biff Parson (139 passing yards, 2 rushing TDs) and Dre Barnes (15 carries, 164 yards, 1 TD). Liberty s defense limited Delaware State s trio of quarterbacks to 27 yards on 4-23 passing. The Flames intercepted four Hornet passes and forced six turnovers overall. Eugene Goodman tallied 74 rushing yards for the Flames, including his first career touchdown. Uzowihe enters the game two tackles shy of the centry mark, while Newman needs six stops to reach the milestone. The Flames are 100-45 (.690) at the facility since it opened on Oct. 21, 1989. A Liberty Win Would... Improve the Flames all-time record against Delaware State to 10-5, making the Hornets the fourth team Liberty has defeated 10 or more times on the gridiron (also Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb and VMI). Mark the third straight season Liberty has defeated a MEAC opponent, boosting the Flames all-time mark to 21-12 against MEAC foes. Give Liberty a season-opening win for the first time since 2010, when the Flames posted a 52-7 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) at City Stadium. Flames Fast Facts Quick Hitters The Flames are ranked No. 14 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 15 in the STATS FCS Top 25 Poll to start the 2015 season. Liberty was picked second (behind Coastal Carolina) in the Big South preseason poll. The Flames have captured seven Big South titles in the last eight years. They are 37-6 in conference games since the start of the 2007 season. Liberty qualified for the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the first time in 2014, defeating James Madison in the first round before falling at Villanova in the second round. The Flames have recorded nine consecutive winning records and are 70-34 since the start of the 2006 campaign. The Flames are 44-10 in home games at Williams Stadium since the start of the 2006 season. Liberty went 3-2 versus FCS Top 25 teams in 2014, highlighted by a 15-14 win at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22. That marked the Flames first-ever win over a No. 1 team in program history.
