Andrew McVittie (Head coach & volunteer, back), (L to R) Audra Kearney (Survivor & President Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast Club), Pauline Dixon (Survivor), Wendy Coghill (Supporter), Margaret Davies (volunteer & Pauline s sister), Margie Basham (Survivor) Joining the ladies is Pat Daly (Bribie Island) In June I competed in the 2016 National Dragons Abreast Regatta at Lake Kawana as a Supporter. I am a member of the Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast Club, which is part of the Maroochy Sea Serpents Dragon Boat and Outrigging Club. We are based at the Maroochy River Resort near the Waterfront Hotel. We train on the lagoon, the Maroochy River and Eudlo Creek. I really enjoyed paddling in a Supporters crew. What an amazing composite team! There were paddlers from Ballarat, Bribie Island, Devonport, Gippsland, Port Lincoln, Wagga Wagga and the Sunshine Coast. The Regatta was an amazing and very emotional experience. There were hundreds of Survivors paddling from many parts of Australia. The Sunshine Coast Survivors teamed up with paddlers from Melbourne, Bundaberg and Brisbane. They paddled brilliantly and came 4 th in the Final. For some of these awesome ladies it was their very first race. For others it was their first race since having surgery. I met Pat Daly from Bribie Island. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 88. She is now 93 and is the oldest dragon boat paddler in the world. She is an absolute inspiration. The Race of Remembrance, the Flowers on the Water Ceremony and the Tribute Race for Supporters for Carol Waitohi were all so lovely and so emotional. The names of all the paddlers, who have lost their battle with this horrible disease were read out. Everybody there knew some of these ladies and gents. So there were lots of tears. Apparently 40 women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia. Carol fell off the back of a dragon boat at the Gold Coast. after suffering an aneurism. Her mum is a survivor and Carol was a supporter, a paddler and a sweep. Lorraine was in the Gold Coast Boat in the Tribute Race. I knew Carol quite well. She was an absolutely delightful person. It was an honour to be paddling in the Tribute Race in honour of Carol. Everybody reading this article probably has a friend, neighbour, workmate or relative, who has survived breast cancer or is currently undergoing treatment. The National Dragons Abreast Regatta was testimony to the fact that for lots of people there is life and hope after breast cancer. Dragons Abreast provides an understanding support network for women after a diagnosis of breast cancer, and dragon boat paddling is a tangible activity that draws out the innate qualities of breast cancer survivors- hope, inspiration, excitement and determination to beat a dreaded disease faced by millions of women around the world. Professor John Boyages. The Dragons Abreast dinner at the Events Centre in Caloundra was brilliant. The Guest Speaker was Robyn Moore. She is a Survivor and is an Ambassador for Dragons Abreast Australia. I am sure, that you have all heard her voice in How Green Was my Cactus and Blinky Bill. Robyn is an amazing, inspirational and hilarious speaker. I have not laughed so much for ages. I did actually get to Brisbane on the Saturday afternoon and competed in the 1000 m event at the Australian Indoor Rowing Championships, thanks to my driver, Derek. That is the first time in my whole sporting life, that I have competed in 2 Nationals on the same day. Wendy Coghill

A SUGGESTION FROM WENDY I suggest applying for a grant for maybe 5 Model D rowing machines. We then hire them out to members, who do not have their own machine and are not in gyms. Those people are responsible for looking after and storing the machines for whatever length of time is decided upon. We charge maybe $20 a month. These machines would also be used for the 2017 QLD Championships. I can think of at least 5 individuals/ families, who might be interested. It means, that we would be encouraging members to get fitter and healthier and work on their Indoor Rowing technique. The Indoor Rowing Club would get some income from the hiring and we would not have to have machines sent up in 2017. Concept2 might even send them up freight free, as they usually do for the QLD Championships. By the time we applied for a grant and maybe get one, it would probably be the end of 2016. As it is Term 3 now, I will not have much spare time, probably until September. Albert Gay has had quite a lot of experience with applying for grants. He has said, that this idea is a possibility and has agreed to mentor, whoever does the application. Is there anybody else, who could apply for a grant? I have done the last 2 small ones with the Sunshine Coast Council. A number of members have already said, that they like the idea. It certainly has a lot of positives. What do you think? Cheers Wendy: - wendy.coghill@optusnet.com.au
