WELCOME TO USD TENNIS CAMPS!! We know that a good tennis game is a friend for life. And tennis is fun, even more as you improve! Our experienced coaches provide a perfect blend of serious commitment to your tennis development with a very positive teaching style. We ll give you enough coaching and instruction to last a lifetime. And we also never forget that you re at camp to have fun! So, take a look through this comic-brochure and decide which week of camps and clinics will fit best for you!
SHERRI STEPHENS Sherri, you have been with the University of San Diego for over 25 years now, you never get bored? Tennis has been my life from the time I can remember. Going to the club everyday as a child to playing in college to coaching for a living. I am so grateful have tennis be my life...my most favorite part is sharing what I know to be true both on and off of the court to develop all ages and levels of tennis enthusiasts. How do you try to convey that passion onto your players? Both college players and campers? And how do you relate coaching college players to coaching the kids in the camps? How is it similar, how is it different? As has been said so many times, tennis is a sport of a lifetime and it doesn t matter to me if you are the youngest beginner or the NCAA National Champion, I love working with all levels with the hope of increasing their love for the sport. What is so special about your camps, in comparison to all those other ones out there? Our camp focuses not on tennis alone. I invite boys and girls to come to an absolutely beautiful campus and have some FUN along with hard work on the courts of USD! How much improvement do you generally see when kids attend a week of camp? My goal for camps and clinics at the University of San Diego, is to inspire all who attend to want to continue on and never stop playing...no matter what the level of experience or ability. Within one week of intense practicing you can stimulate kids to start playing regularly..that s when you ll improve the most! Are you ready for this upcoming summer s camp? Of course I am, and YOU better be too!!! Besides leading my team to the NCAA championships, it s my favorite time during the summer!
COACHING USD s Women s Tennis Head Coach Sherri Stephens and Assistant Coach Patricia Tarabini are directly involved with the summer tennis camps. They are two of the most respected coaches in America and all over the world. Their dedication to tennis and daily hands-on participation ensures that the program is of the highest caliber. Sherri Stephens takes enormous pride in the quality of the camps and personally hires and trains her camp staff. Often, she involves her current college players on the team as coaches or practice partners, so that YOU get the best out of your camp-experience! PERSONAL INSTRUCTION We always attempt to limit the camp size, so that we can provide a high level of individual instruction. Our instructor-player ratio does not reach beyond 8-1. We offer a personalized approach using a combination of drills, games and match play in a spirited team format. If a camper has been working with a coach at home, we try to build on that foundation rather than introduce major changes. Instruction is geared to beginners as well as ranked junior players. Each camper is placed in a program appropriate to his or her skills. In addition to the basic technical essentials, we teach strategy, sportsmanship, mental toughness, and goal setting. We emphasize the competitive side of tennis through a number of fun tennis-games and ofcourse we ll have them play many MATCHES! The kids will be divided in teams that take on the others and will learn how it feels to cheer on teammates!
T-TIME Our mascot at USD is the TORERO. A Torero is a Spanish bullfighter. The characteristics of a bullfighter have to be that of confidence, strength, discipline, mental and physical toughness. The T is our logo for the TOREROS. So, during camp, we have, what we call, T time. This is a time where we work on the characteristics of a bullfighter. Talks on mental toughness, sportsmanship and some physical conditioning are just a few of the things that happen during T time. It is important for the kids to understand that tennis is not only about your ability to hit a ball back and forth. To be succesfull at tennis, you need more than a good set of strokes. We try to teach them that through the concept of T-time!
NON-TENNIS ACTIVITIES When you are playing as much tennis a day as you will during our camps, you are gonna want some distraction!! Therefore, we have complemented the camp with other non-tennis activities such as movies, field games, talent shows, pizza-nights, camp dances, skits, and to top it all off: a trip to Mission Beach. Most often, campers identify the offcampus trip as the coolest activity within the entire camp, so we have decided to incorporate riding the rollercoaster as our camp-tradition!! In addition we take both day-campers and residence-campers to the USD swimming-pool during lunch time in order to cool down and refresh before we start our afternoon sessions. Everything we do in the camp, even non-tennis related activities, is designed to be in a competitive form in order to create team spirit and sportsmanship among the campers. The campers find that these activites in particular create longlasting friendships between both players and counselors. There may be an extra charge for some of the non-tennis activities. We provide transportation for the Mission Beach trip, but tickets for the rollercoaster and other fair-related activites are the responsibility of the camper. Entrance to the pool is provided by USD and also movies, field games, talent shows, and pizza-nights are calculated within the budget of the camp. The experience is always described as exciting by other campers! It s what makes our camps special in comparison to other tennis camps!
CAMP PHOTOS Each week we will take a camp photo that can be e-mailed to everyone upon request. We try to create photo s that are funny and that represent the time you have spend at USD. We ask all campers to provide us with a quote that fits the facial expressions in the photo and they always turn out hilarious!
LOCATION Located on the southern tip of California, San Diego is the state s second-largest city. With an average daily temperature of 64 degrees in February and 76 degrees in August, the area is perfect for TENNIS..!! San Diego is noted for an outstanding zoo, museums, Spanish missions, Sea World, and major sports programs The campus, built in Spanish Renaissance style, is situated on 180 acres of mesa overlooking San Diego s beautiful Mission Bay. It has been rated as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. Our campus provides a safe, secure environment, and add an exciting cultural dimension to the total camp experience. Especially residence campers really absorb the college environment, since they are staying in the college dorms and dining at the Student Life Pavilion, where all college students eat regularly throughout the semester. We always incoporate a tour of the campus during one of our lunches, so that the kids have an idea of the sizeof the campus and beauty they are surrounded by!! The USD West Tennis courts The Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center, located on the West side of the USD campus, is home to the USD women s and men s tennis teams, recently went through a complete renovation of its eight- court facility at the west end of the USD campus. The site received a new concrete substructure and surface; new chain link fences with screening; a new center walkway with individual court access; a new entry way with nearby public facilities; a new tournament desk area; and additional bleacher seating. The facilities are used for the usd summer camps, so that they directly experience the professionalism of a college team!
