REFEREE WELCOME KIWI HOOPS COACH LEARNING MODULE 2 Welcome to the second of two modules in the Kiwi Hoops Coach: Learning Modules. FUNDAMENTAL SKILS Individual Offense and Individual Defence. Team Offensive/Defensive Principles. The completed workbook will demonstrate that you have the knowledge and skills to: Teach and develop the fundamental skills in Individual Offense/Defence and the principles of Team offense and defence. Important note This is the second of two modules you need to complete in the Kiwi Hoops Coach: Learning Module stream. In order to gain competency in the Learning Modules participants have to attend the module and participate in the practical activities and complete the workbook. Assessment Assessment will be successful completion of the Modular workbook, and competency in the practical activities. Workbook: Comprises Module content and questions to complete. Practical Activities: Delivery of the Individual Offensive/Defensive Skills. Understanding Offensive/ Defensive principles, and managing large groups. PAGE 2

INDIVIDUAL OFFENSIVE SKILLS The fundamental individual offensive skills in the Mini coaching space are the skills that the participant should have acquired at this level of development and the skills you as a coach will need to be competent at teaching and developing. The purpose of the individual offensive skills is to enable your players and team to score points through lay ups and shot variations. 1.1 Explain what the 3 key elements of the triple threat position: 1.... 2.... 3.... 1.2 What are the key elements when dribbling with movement? 1.... 2.... 3.... INDIVIDUAL DEFENSIVE SKILLS The objective here is to introduce the participant to the fundamentals of defending a player in the half court. How does a player prevent who they are guarding from scoring or getting into a position to score? We will explore the basic fundamentals to on the ball defense. The purpose of the individual offensive skills is to enable your players and team to score points through lay ups and shot variations. 1.5 Describe the defensive stance position and its purpose? 1.6 Which of the following are false? When defending a player you should: 1. Follow behind them at all times. 2. Stay between them and the basket. 3. Mirror their movements. 4. Try to steal the ball. 5. TEAM OFFENSIVE SKILLS As a coach you will have to establish your philosophy and principles on team offense. How are we going to score? How can we involve everyone? What is a good shot? It is important that you emphasise to your participants the purpose of working as a team to get a good shot. 1.8 Describe the principles of offensive play you would use for a Mini team? MANAGING LARGE GROUPS You are coaching a group of 30 kids on your own and you have an hour for your session. You have 3 participants who are causing you grief with their behaviour and a number of the children are now starting to get restless. How would you? 1.
