Rules for Elementary School Kickball The rules for kickball are closely related to those of baseball. The main difference is that kickball involves a big rubber ball. Kickball is played on a field with 4 bases arranged on the corners of a diamond-shaped "infield". However, since the game is played mostly by grade school kids in low-budget districts, the "bases" are reduced to "this patch of rocks", "this smashed tin can", or "this cool shaped stick". If you are a more privileged player, you may get "yellow spray - painted bases on black top," or "orange rubber throw - down bases." Player positions are also similar to those of baseball. There is an "infield" and an "outfield." The infield contains the positions that involve the bases, while the outfield is mainly designated to catching or retrieving the ball when it is kicked out of the infield. Actual playing positions vary depending on the number of kids that are actually playing. If there are only a few children playing, the positions are usually spread out, but if there are a good number of players, kids will position themselves wherever there is space. Game play goes as follows: the ball is rolled towards home plate, and the player which is up ( kicking ), tries to kick the ball. If the ball is caught in the air, the kicker is out. A player is also out if the ball is thrown at them, and hits them while they are not touching a base. If a thrown ball misses them, they may only run to the next base, which is known on the kickball field as the "one base on an overthrow" rule. Also similar to baseball, if the ball is thrown to the first base man, and it is caught by the first base man while he/she/it is touching first base, the player running to first base is out. This is known as a "forced out" in that the runner was forced to run to that base. A "forced out" can occur on any base that a runner is forced to run to. Once a team gets 3 outs, the teams switch sides. A team gets one point for having a runner make it all the way around the bases and back to home base.

Center fielder Left fielder 2nd base Shortstop 3rd base Right fielder Pitcher Catcher 1st base

How To Play: Hopscotch Each player chooses a marker, (a small stone or bean bag). The first player tosses their marker onto base 1. Player hops over base 1 and lands onto bases 2 and 3 with one foot on each base, making sure not to step into base 1. Player then jumps onto base 4 on one foot, then into bases 5 and 6 with one foot on each base. The player then hops onto base 7 on one foot, then bases 8 and 9 with one foot on each base. Player proceeds onto base 10 on one foot and turns around balancing on the same foot. Player returns in reverse order to bases 2 and 3, bends forward to collect their stone from base 1, then jumps over base 1 and off the Hopscotch court. The player then tosses their stone onto base 2 and continues their turn, unless they miss, in which case the next player takes their turn. Players begin each subsequent turn where they left off. Players never jump onto the base where their stone has been tossed. The game continues like this with players advancing one base each time, then reaching base 10 and returning successfully in reverse order to base #1. (When a player has tossed to base 10, they hop to bases 8 and 9, bend forward to collect their stone from base 10, and return in reverse order.) If a player throws their marker on a line, it is the next player's turn. If a player hops on a line, that player's turn is over, next player takes their turn. How To Win: The first player to successfully land their markers into each base, and hop according to the directions, is the winner!

Hopscotch 10 8 5 7 4 2 1 9 6 3

4 - Square Object: Players attempt to remain in square #1 the longest! How To Play: The first four players begin by standing inside one of the 4 squares. Player in court #1 serves the ball into any of the other 3 courts. That player returns the ball back to any court. Play proceeds like this until a player allows a ball to bounce twice in their court, hits the ball out of the court, hits a line, spikes the ball, or is unable to successfully return the ball to another court. If this occurs, that player rotates out of the game, either by going to the end of the wait line or to court #4 if there are only four players. The other players in the game rotate up to the empty space. (Player on court #4 moves to 3, 3 to 2, and 2 to 1.) If there are more than four players, the first waiting player enters at court #4. Every new round is served by the player in court #1.

RUNNING AT RECESS With the expansion of the playground, students may run around the regular PE course. However, students need to be very aware of the other activities going on at recess.

If it is muddy, stay on the blacktop. Wipe off your shoes before you go inside.

The playground can be a fun place when everyone plays safely!
