Kathy McConnell-Miller (Virginia `89) is in her third season as the head coach of the Golden Hurricane women's basketball program. In two seasons, McConnell-Miller has an overall mark of 26-40 and a Western Athletic Conference mark of 13-15. McConnell-Miller enters her third season with the school's first-ever nationally ranked recruiting class and the most experienced group of returners in her three seasons. The 2001-2002 freshmen class ranked as the 41st-best recruiting class in the nation according to the January edition of the All-Star Girls Report presented by The Women's Basketball Journal, and the group was the top-ranked class among Western Athletic Conference schools. When McConnell-Miller took over the reigns of the Tulsa women's basketball program two years ago, she inherited a team that had combined to win just 21 games over the previous three seasons and had never finished higher than fifthplace in the Western Athletic Conference. In her first season as Tulsa's head coach McConnell-Miller jolted the TU women's basketball program with vigor, enthusiasm and enough motivation to win 14 games, the second most in school history. Under her leadership, Tulsa finished fourth in the WAC with a 9-5 record, which was TU's best finish in its four years as a conference member, recorded a 9-4 home mark and capped off the season by capturing its first win at the WAC Tournament. TU's turnaround did not go unnoticed as she was named the WAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year. On April 12, 1999, McConnell-Miller became the eighth head coach in the 14-year history of the Tulsa women's basketball program, but just the second since the women's program was reinstated six years ago. McConnell-Miller, 34, came to Tulsa after spending four years on the coaching staff at the University of Illinois (1995-99). McConnell-Miller was the Associate Head Coach during the 1998-99 campaign, while serving as an assistant coach for the Illini the previous three seasons.

Tulsa (4-4, 0-0 WAC) plays its final two non-conference games of the regular season this week at the 2001 Fun in the Sun Shootout in Cancun, Mexico. The four-team field of Furman, Pepperdine, Oral Roberts and Tulsa will each play two games in the two-day event. TU opens the tournament against Pepperdine (3-4). Following the Pepperdine contest, the Hurricane faces either Furman or tournament-host, Oral Roberts. Senior Carla Morrow leads TU in scoring and rebounding with 13.4 points and 7.1 boards per game. Junior Alyssa Shriver and senior Leela Farr are also averaging double figures in scoring with 11.9 and 11.1 points per contest, respectively. Tulsa is averaging 62.6 points and 39.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 41-percent from the field and 71 percent from the free-throw line. THE SERIES... Today's game marks the third meeting between Tulsa and Pepperdine. The Waves, who lead the overall series, 2-0, captured victories at Tulsa in 1998-99 and at campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles during the 1999-2000 campaign. Although Tulsa Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller is in her third season, she was not on the sidelines during the 1999-2000 contest. McConnell-Miller was forced to miss the game because she was pregnant and unable to fly. Former TU assistant coach Mike Shepherd took over the coaching reins for the game, but TU lost, 65-51. McConnell-Miller gave birth to her first child less than 48 hours later.

page 3 SCOUTING THE WAVES... Pepperdine (3-4) has lost two out of its last three games entering the 2001 Fun in the Sun Shootout, including a 77-71 overtime loss to Illinois in its most recent outing. The Waves currently have four players scoring in double figures, including top scorer, Damaris Hinojosa, who is averaging 14.1 points per game. Hinojosa is also averaging 5.0 assists per clip. Nadja Morgan is the team s top rebounder with 6.0 boards per contest. Pepperdine is averaging 72.3 points and 39.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 39-percent from the field and 68-percent from the charity stripe. Mark Trakh is in his ninth season at Pepperdine and has a mark of 140-98. Pepperdine was a WNIT participant last season. TEAM LEADERS... Morrow is 19-of-20 (.950) from the free-throw line this season. Junior Alyssa Shriver is ranked ninth nationally for blocked shots per game with 3.3 (26) and her seven blocked shots against #4 Oklahoma ranks as the fourth-best single-game effort in the country. McCONNELL-MILLER REACHES TU COACHING MARK... With TU s 66-56 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Tulsa head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller became TU s all-time winningest coach with 25 victories. She surpassed Joyce Plagens (1982-84) for first place on the school's career coaching list. Although the 2001-02 season marks the 17 th season of women s basketball at The University of Tulsa, the program is very young. After being dropped at the conclusion of the 1986-87 season, TU basketball was reinstated 10 years later and the Hurricane played its first season in 1996-97. Tulsa was coached by six coaches during the first 11 seasons. McConnell-Miller is the eighth coach at TU and is just one of three coaches to spend three seasons at the school. The other two coaches to reach three years were Bill Biggs (1979-82) and Marla Odom (1996-99). MASTER OF HER DOMAIN: SHRIVER DOMINATES INSIDE THE PAINT; SWATS HER WAY INTO TU RECORD BOOK... How big of an impact has junior Alyssa Shriver made on the TU women's basketball program this season? Well consider this, she is second on the team in scoring (11.9) andfield goals (39-67). She is first on the team in blocked shots (26) ) and field goal percentage (.58.2). In her first contest as a Golden Hurricane, Shriver controlled the inside on the defensive end, blocking four Oklahoma State field goal attempts to establish a new record for single game blocks. In her second game against No. 4 Oklahoma, she dominated both ends of the floor with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. She gave up just two points to OU's center, while recording four blocked shots in the first half alone to tie her own record set the previous night. Shriver's seven blocked shots is not only a TU single-game record, but also set Oklahoma's single-game mark for opponent blocked shots. Shriver came up big for Tulsa against Western Michigan when she blocked three shots and collected all three rebounds on three straight possessions for the Broncos late in the game and helped Tulsa to its first win of the season. Against Oral Roberts, Shriver tallied a career-highs of 25 points, 10 field goals and 5-of-6 shooting from the foul line. In eight games, Shriver has 26 blocked shots, and with the single game record in her possession, Shriver will set her sights on the single season record of 31 set by Denise Wagner (1997-2001) during the 1999-2000 season. Wagner is also the career holder with 45 set in 81 games. Shriver, a 6-4 center, transferred to TU from Iowa State prior to the 2000-2001 season.

page 4 MORROW REACHES MILESTONE AGAINST UAPB Tulsa senior Carla Morrow reached a milestone in TU s 66-56 win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Morrow collected seven rebounds against the Golden Lions and became just the third Tulsa player to record 500 rebounds. She ranks third on the school s career rebounding chart with 520 and trails former Hurricane standout Lila Osceola (1996-98, 1999-2000) by just nine boards. Mary Keeran (1980-84) in the school s career rebounding leader with 645. SHRIVER, MORROW NAMED TO BERTHA TEAGUE CLASSIC ALL-TOURNEY TEAM... Tulsa senior Carla Morrow and junior Alyssa Shriver were each named to the 2001 Bertha Teague Classic All- Tournament team. In two games, Morrow averaged 14.o points and 5.5 rebounds. She scored a game-high 18 points against Oklahoma State. Shriver finished with a two-game average of 12.5 points, including 21 vs. #4 Oklahoma, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocked shots. PICKED TO FINISH SEVENTH IN WAC PRESEASON COACHES POLL... The Golden Hurricane has been picked to finish in seventh place in this year's conference race according to the WAC's preseason coaches poll. The newest member of the conference, Louisiana Tech, has been selected by the league's coaches to win the 2001-02 women's basketball title. The Lady Techsters earned nine of the 10 first place votes and tallied a total of 81 points to top the poll. (Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams) Hawai`i, featuring last season's Freshman of the Year April Atuaia, was picked to finish second, garnering one first place vote and 69 points. 2001 WAC Basketball Coaches' Preseason Poll Team Points 1. Morrow ranks third on TU's scoring list with 855 points and in rebounds with 520, fourth in made field goals with 335, fourth in three-point field goals with 80, fourth in assists with 176, second for steals with 168 and second in blocked shots with 37. Her 93 games played are the fifth most in school history and her eight career double-double games are second among TU's career leaders. Farr ranks fourth in scoring (778), eighth for made field goals (226), second for made free throws (326) and free throw percentage (.850), seventh in rebounds (397) and her 78 career games is ranks ninth. Her five career double-double games are third on TU's all-time list.

page 5 HIGHLY-TOUTED FRESHMEN CLASS READY TO MAKE IMMEDIATE IMPACT... Perhaps the most anticipated aspect this season will be the development of TU's freshmen class. Tulsa's 2001-2002 recruiting class of Bethanie Bentz, Alison Carney, Emily Jaskowiak, LeAnn Upshaw and TaTanisha Wagoner was ranked as the 41st-best recruiting class in the nation according to the All-Star Girls Report presented by The Women's Basketball Journal. TU's five freshmen were the highest-ranked class in the WAC, as well as the school's best-ever recruiting class. ILLINOIS STANDOUT ALLISON CURTIN TRANSFERS TO... Allison Curtin, a two-time all-big Ten First Team performer, transferred to Tulsa prior to the 2001-2002 season. Curtin will sit out the 2001-02 season, and have one year of eligibility in 2002-03. She led the Illini to two NCAA Tournament second-round appearances in 1999 and 2000 and to a WNIT berth in 2001. The fivefoot, 11-inch guard started 72 of 97 games played and led the Illini in scoring the past two seasons. She leaves Illinois as the school's all-time leader in steals with 252 and ranks fifth on the all-time scoring list with 1,529 points, fourth in three-pointers (114) and ninth in assists (311). In 2000-2001, Curtin was named to the all-big Ten First Team for the second straight season. She completed the regular season ranked among the top 10 players in the conference in scoring (8th, 14.4 ppg), steals (2nd, 3.04 spg), assists (7th, 4.18 apg), free throw percentage (9th,.768) and 3-point field goal percentage (10th,.348). She ranked first in the Big Ten with an average of 3.31 steals per game against conference foes. 'S "PRO" CONNECTION... Senior Mia Williams' uncle, Sam Clancy, is a former NFL football player. During his 11-year career, he played for the Seattle Seahawks, the Cleveland Browns and the Indianapolis Colts. He is currently the defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints. Her cousin, Sam Clancy Jr., is a member of the USC men's basketball team. Sophomore Candice Brewers' father, Ron, was a two-time All-America basketball player at Arkansas. He played for the Razorbacks from 1976-78 and led the Hogs to the 1978 Final Four. He was a first-round draft pick for the Portland Trailblazers in 1978. Kathy McConnell-Miller is one of six of her eight siblings who attended college on a basketball scholarship. Her older sister, Suzie, is a former basketball All-American at Penn State and was a member of the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic teams. She played for the WNBA's Cleveland Rockers before retiring after four seasons in 2000. Freshman Emily Jaskowiak's grandfather, Charles Share, played basketball for the St. Louis Hawks from 1950-60. HURRICANE TIDBITS... Tulsa s 51 rebounds against Arkansas-Pine Bluff tied the school single game record set against North Texas (1-6-98). In TU s 77-50 win over Arkansas-Little Rock, the Hurricane registered the fourth largest margin of victory in school history. The 27-point win equaled TU s 27-point, 78-51, win over Oral Roberts on Dec. 22, 1999. Last year's freshmen class saw extensive action, which should pay great dividends this season. Three of this year's four sophomores at least one start a year ago including Candice Brewer, Becky Heidotten and Kim Chiconas, while Kayla Elliott played in 22 games a year ago. Sophomore Candice Brewer, who was named to the all-wac Newcomer team, finished fourth on the team in scoring last season with 9.7 points per game. Brewer led all WAC freshmen in scoring a year ago with 10.6 points per contest. Kathy McConnell-Miller and husband, Brad, became parents for second time in two years with the birth of their first daughter, Mackenzie Marie, on August 3, 2001. Their son Brice was born on January 3, 2000. Allison Curtin is the second oldest of nine children, including four brothers and four sisters, while Kathy McConnell-Miller is one of eight children. McConnell-Miller is also one of six of the eight siblings who attended college on a basketball scholarship. Freshman Bethanie Bentz's father, Ted, played college football at Southwest Oklahoma State, while her mother, Deanne, was a member of the SWOSU basketball and volleyball teams. Candice Brewer's sister, Elisha, was an All-America sprinter at Arkansas in 1998.

page 6 TU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 2001-02 SLATE FEATURES SEVEN POSTSEASON TEAMS, 13 HOME GAMES... The 2001-2002 University of Tulsa women's basketball schedule features seven games against postseason tournament teams from a year ago, 13 home contests and dates with Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts. TU will also host the 2002 Williams Western Athletic Conference Tournament. Tulsa will play 13 regular season home games at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, TU will face four opponents for the first time and the Hurricane will participate in two regular season tournaments, including the Bertha Teague Classic and the Fun in the Sun Shootout. The seven postseason teams from last year include four NCAA Tournament participants, Arkansas, Louisiana Tech, who reached the "Elite Eight" last season, Oklahoma, who advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" for the second straight season, and Oral Roberts. The three Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) squads are Oklahoma State, Pepperdine and WAC rival Hawai`i. For the second straight season, Tulsa will host the WAC Tournament. The 2002 Williams WAC Tournament opens at the Reynolds Center on March 5, and will continue through the championship games on March 9. ARKANSAS' NEIGHBORS NAMED WOMEN'S ASSISTANT COACH AT... On June 25, 2001, TU Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller announced the appointment of University of Arkansas administrative assistant Mike Neighbors as an assistant basketball coach for the Golden Hurricane. Neighbors will coordinate opponent scouting, oversee scheduling, video exchange, assist with recruiting and serve as the director of the Kathy McConnell-Miller Summer Camps for Girls in addition to player development and other coaching duties. Neighbors, 32, comes to Tulsa from the University of Arkansas where he spent the last two seasons as an administrative assistant for the Lady Razorbacks. Last season, Arkansas posted a 20-13 overall record and advanced to the second round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. During the 1999-2000 campaign, the Lady Razorbacks completed the season with a 17-15 overall mark and a semifinal appearance in the 2000 WNIT. Previously, Neighbors spent the 1998-99 campaign as the head girls coach at Cabot (Ark.) High School where he led the Panthers to a 19-9 overall record, a Class AAAAA-east conference runner-up and a state tournament appearance. A HURRICANE IN?... In 1922, The University of Tulsa football team, who in the past had a variety of nicknames-- such as the Kendallites, Presbyterians, Tigers, Orange and Black and Tulsans - began working out in the fall with a new nickname - the Yellow Jackets. The team opened the season and it was apparent that Tulsa was going to have a great year, and trying to seize some publicity for his team, Tulsa Head Coach Howard Archer wanted to find a new nickname quickly. After a remark was made in practice one day about "roaring through opponents," and because of their new jersey colors (black and yellow), he thought of "Golden Tornadoes." But a check showed that Georgia Tech already had chosen that tag in 1917. From the tornado, he evolved meteorologically to the hurricane. A few days before the team left for a game against Texas A&M, Archer asked the squad to vote on the name, and "Golden Hurricane" was born. COX COMMUNICATION TO TELEVISE SIX HOME GAMES IN 2001-2002...
