POSSESSION CLOCK SITUATIONS MECHANICS NOTES: The officiating team must communicate with the Possession Clock Operator during pregame. Be sure to discuss that the operator will have to start the possession clock on the self-start movement (or official s whistle if needed) when self-starts are permitted: Possession Clock Violation outside of the CSA (Reset & Self-Start) Fouls outside of the CSA causing a change of possession (Reset & Self- Start) Out of bounds (Possession clock continues to run & Self-Start) When an out of bounds ball changes possession the clock operator should reset the 90 seconds but wait to start the time until the team newly in possession starts play Out of bounds as a result of a foul (Possession clock continues to run & Self-Start allowed)[if change of possession, Reset] Be sure to discuss the increased likelihood of green cards and increased resets of the possession clock. Officials will signal ALL possession clock resets. The shot clock operator should not be responsible for determining resets. Simultaneous Whistle - Officials must review with the possession clock operator that a whistle blown for shooting space that is simultaneous with or immediately following the shot will result in a quick reset signal by the crew All cards and offside violations will result in a reset of the possession clock. Exception: Offside fouls and cards reset the possession clock 10-Goal Differential - Officials must use the stop the PC signal [RB p. 82] when there is a 10 goal difference and we have a foul in the CSA that would otherwise require stoppage of both the game clock and the possession clock. OUT OF BOUNDS 1. Ball goes out of bounds over the end line or sideline off the attack (change possession) 2. Ball goes out of bounds over the end line or sideline off the defense. (No Possession Clock reset since the defense never had possession) 3. Ball goes out of bounds over the end line off a wide shot & defense is nearest to spot where ball goes out
OUT OF BOUNDS - cont. 4. Ball goes out of bounds over the end line off a wide shot & defense is nearest to spot where ball goes out but attack incorrectly picks up the ball and runs up field Set up the free position at the closest dot 5. Ball goes out of bounds over the end line off a wide shot & attack nearest to spot where ball goes out Possession clock continues to run 6. Ball goes out of bounds over the end line off a deflected shot & the nearest player to the spot where the ball goes out gets possession. (Either team may possess as result of position relative to ball going out) [Deflection requires a PC Reset] 7. Ball goes out of bounds over the sideline or end line (outside the CSA) as the result of a foul & Foul Possession clock continues to run Free Position 2M inside the boundary Offender and Others must be 2M away, the non-engagement area 8. Ball goes far out of bounds over the sideline (change of possession) Signal Time Out (Official s judgment on delay)(note: This will stop both the Game Clock & the Possession Clock) if the clocks were stopped 9. There is a Possession Clock violation BEFORE the ball goes out of bounds over the sideline or end line outside the CSA

Shot on goal, wide or high, and ball goes out of bounds (in the CSA) defending team is nearest to the ball when it went out of bounds but an attacking player incorrectly retrieves the ball and runs up field o Whistle o Signal Timeout o Signal Direction o Correct the self-start and position a player from the defending team on the closest dot o Whistle Restart 9. Shot on goal, wide or high, and ball goes out of bounds (outside the CSA) defending team is nearest to the ball when it went out of bounds but an attacking player retrieves the ball and runs up field o Whistle

Shot on goal, tipped or deflected by a defender [Note: Defender cannot make a save.] o Attack retains possession NO signal, possession clock continues o Defense gains possession Signal Possession Clock RESET 11. Bounce shot on goal Wait - Play does not end when the ball hits the ground. See Mechanics above for each of the following situations after a bounce shot. Whistle blown for shooting space simultaneous with or immediately following a shot and the shot results in a goal o The goal shall count o The penalty will not be administered 13. When a shot has been released prior to the expiration of the possession clock and the ball enters the goal, the goal shall count. ALTERNATE POSSESSION/OFFSETTING FOULS Signal Time Out (Stop both clocks) Signal Offsetting Fouls & Fouls B.O.O. Outside CSA; ball positioned where foul occurs that caused play to stop; offender 2m away; all others 2m away, the non-engagement area Inside CSA; above or below GLE; ball positioned on closest dot; offender 2m away; all others 2m away, the non-engagement area only if there is a change of possession Exception: If there is no change of possession for alternate possession there is no possession clock reset unless, the opponent commits a possession clock reset foul which is a card or offside. Situation: Blue is in possession of the ball when she charges into her opponent at which time it is discovered that the White team is offside. We now have alternate possession and Blue is being awarded AP. There is no change of possession but due to the offside violation, the possession clock will be RESET
Situation: Blue is in possession of the ball when she is slashed by a White opponent, it is then noticed that the Blue player is wearing jewelry. Administer a Green card to Blue for delay of game. Administer a yellow card to White for a slash. AP is awarded to Blue. There is no change of possession but due to the card, the possession clock will be RESET TEAM FOULS/OFFSIDE CALL OFFSIDE VIOLATIONS IMMEDIATELY Signal Timeout (Stops both the Possession Clock and the Game Clock) & Offside B.O.O Ball outside CSA; Correct the Offside; free position at the spot of the ball; all others 2M away, the non-engagement area Ball inside CSA, above GLE; Correct the Offside; position the ball: Attack offside; ball positioned at nearest spot on 8M or 12M; opponent 4M behind; all others 4M or 2M away from free position, non-engagement area Defense offside; ball positioned at nearest spot on 8M or 12M; opponent 4M behind; all others 4M or 2M away from free position, non-engagement area Ball inside CSA and below GLE; Correct the Offside; position the ball at nearest dot; opponent 4M behind; all others 2M away, non-engagement area Note: Do not call defense offside when the attack is on a scoring play and about to shoot. Ball is in the air and there is a Possession Clock violation If inside CSA, Signal Timeout (Stops both the Possession Clock and the Game Clock) Possession administered relative to where the ball lands. B.O.O. o If ball outside the CSA, closest player to spot gets the ball; all others 2m away; no one behind; Self-Start is legal. Possession clock starts on selfstart or on official s whistle (delay of self-start) o If ball inside the CSA, closest player to spot gets the ball 8m from the goal circle; all others 2m away; no one behind; NO Self-Start

Possession Clock expires as ball is rolled to the corner (outside the CSA) & AFTER the ball goes out of bounds. Nearest non-offending player retrieves ball and brings it in from the endline or sideline at a spot relative to where it went out of bounds 4. Possession Clock expires when ball is outside of the CSA Possession given to the nearest non-offending player to the spot of the ball when the horn sounds All players 2m away; no offender behind Possession clock starts on self-start or on official s whistle (delay of self-start) 5. Possession Clock expires when ball is inside the CSA and inside the arc Signal Timeout Possession given to the nearest non-offending player to the spot of the ball when the horn sounds but no closer than 8 meters of the goal circle All players 2m away; no offender behind Possession clock starts on official s whistle 6. The shooter is fouled in the act of shooting and the foul affects the shot. The Possession Clock expires after the shooter releases the ball. If the Foul is cardable
Signal Time Out (Stop both the Possession Clock and the Game Clock) Issue Card & Signal Foul Attack retains possession o If inside the 8M arc, the ball is on the nearest hash; clear the 8M arc, the restricted area; Defense is entitled to the adjacent hashes; all others must be 4M away from the free position, the non-engagement area o If in the pie slice area, the ball is on the hanging hash; clear the 8M arc, the restricted area, and the Pie area; Defense is entitled to the adjacent hash and the 8M mark on the GLE; all others must be 4M away from the free position, the non-engagement area; players allowed in the opposite side Pie area. o if between the 8M arc and the 12M fan, the ball is on the 12M; all others must be 2M away, the non-engagement area No offender behind (carded player off and playing short) If the foul is NOT cardable and the officials determine that there were a couple seconds between the shot release & defense foul and the sound of the Possession Clock horn: Signal Time Out (Stop both the Possession Clock and the Game Clock) [Officials huddle and determine time to put back on both the Game Clock and the Possession Clock] [Attack will have possession] B.O.O. [Most likely an 8m hash FP; clear 8M arc, the restricted area, and all players must be 4M away from the free position, the non-engagement area] 7. If the possession clock expires after the release of a shot, WAIT, then manage according to the action/situation that follows the shot --- Shot Wide or High Whistle when the ball lands; defense gains possession according to where ball lands. If out of bounds over the end line inside or outside the CSA (Whistle; Signal Possession Clock RESET; Ball carrier brings the ball in-bounds; 2 meter non-engagement area; SELF-START); If in the CSA below GLE (Whistle; Signal Possession Clock RESET; Ball Carrier at the dot; all others 2m away, non-engagement area; NO SELF- START); If outside the CSA (Whistle; Signal Possession Clock RESET; Ball Carrier at the spot of ball; all players 2m away, non-engagement area; SELF-START) Deflected shot Signal RESET & WAIT [either team eligible for possession] --- Signal Possession Clock start/wind when the ball is possessed by either team in the field of
