Grounding reel VDV-2930-14 & VDV-3416 http://www.vdv-reels.com/ 1
Introduction The hand rewind VAN DER VEER Earth Bonding Reels (models VDV-028, VDV-032, VDV-036 and VDV-040) are used when transferring hazardous liquids, gasses or powders between two systems (i.e. aviation refueling vehicle to aircraft). It is used to bond the two adjacent systems together to prevent any potential sparking hazards due to the buildup of static electricity. The unit of the hand rewind model is standard available in a 15, 30 or 40 meter capacity. As an alternative to the hand rewind bonding reels VAN DER VEER offers also an automatic spring rewind version. The spring rewind models VDV-2930-14 and VDV-3416 are equipped with automatic speed control and overrun control. This reel features a rugged internal spring rewind mechanism which provides automatic cable retraction. The VAN DER VEER bonding reels covered by this manual are intended for use on fuel equipment, oil servicing equipment, refuelers, etc. See also http://www.vdv-reels.com/ 2
Product description of the VANDERVEER reel VDV-2930-14 and VDV-3416 The VDV-2930-14 and the VDV-3416 are powerspring rewind static bonding reels, see annex A for all stock-models. The VDV-2930-14 reels is equipped with 22,5 m GTP-8557 galvanized steel cable with yellow vinyl coating, see annex B. The clamp is the GTP-1101 clamp (see annex C) or the new type GTP-9654 clamp (see annex D). Other cables or clamps from Gammon can be chosen as well. Also a longer cable-length up to 35 m are possible. Of course than the reel becomes another type with a longer delivery time. The VDV-3416 is equipped with 30 m GTP-8557 cable. All models from annex A are stock models ready for immediate delivery throughout Europe. The VANDERVEER reels are operating with liquids and dry products under permanent danger for static discharge. The base has 4 holes for a bolted earthed connection. The thick steel shaft with the phosphor bronze bearings ensures a long service live and an ever lasting contact. The main parts of the reel are made from aluminum to save weight. These parts are powdercoated RAL 3001 red. The worldwide standard on cables and clips/clamps is supplied by Gammon Technical Products to follow the latest regulations and highest level of quality. The inner diameter of the VANDERVEER reel is almost 19 cm avoiding the cable, especially in low temperature conditions, to be forced into loops. The VANDERVEER reel is open, no dirt can be gathered in the drum and the cable replacement is hardly a few minutes work. Later to add: ATEX certified: 3
Installation Mount the reel using the bolt holes provided in bracket.check the electrical continuity between the cable on the reel and the structure the reel has been attached to. If continuity is not found, it probably indicates that paint on the structure frame is isolating the reel. The picture shows a resistance test of a new reel. When it s attached to a structure put the black pole onto the structure to be sure it s conductive connected to the structure. Maximum allowed resistance is 10 Ohm!! 4
Use Before each use the reel should be checked visually on damages, movements and operating clamp. Dirt can be loaded into the reel during earlier rewinding of dirty and/or wet cable. This needs to be cleaned regularly simply with water and a sponge during a complete winding of the cable from the reel. The cable can be extended to desired length by simply pulling the cable from the reel. The inside locker will block the reel for rewinding when pulling has stopped. Make connection with grounding connector to the earth point. For rewinding of the cable simply give a small pull to the cable and the locker will unlock and the powerspring will automatically rewind the whole cable back onto the reel. Take the grounding connector in your hand and hold it tight until the cable is completely spooled back onto the reel. Always pull gently not hard and rough to avoid damaging the inside locker The electrical resistance needs to be tested regularly with an Ohm test by multi-meter (no flash tester!), at least after each 100 times of use or each month. Maximum between base or foot and clip or clamp should not exceed 10 Ohms, as shown before, see Installation. Above the limit of 10 Ohm s the reel needs to be replaced. Replacement of cable When the cable with grounding connector is damaged or broken wind the whole cable with clamp from the reel and release it from the bolt. Disconnect the stainless steel tule from the bracket (see pos. 17 from annex E) and put the cable end with the round connector through the tule. Connect the new cable (incl. clamp) with this round connector to the bolt again and rewind it completely manually. The powerspring inside will simply slip over the axis during this process. When the cable is onto the reel the inside powerspring needs to be prestressed a bit. Do this by rotating it a few runs (2 or 3) in opposite direction before mounting stainless steel tule back into the bracket. After the replacement the connection needs to be checked with the Ohm tester as shown before. Maintenance The reel is maintenance free, only the cable needs to be checked and cleaned occasionally as described under Use. If the clamp is malfunctioning we advise to replace the whole cable inclusive the clamp If rewinding or rotating are malfunctioning we advise to replace the reel, send it back for repair or disassemble the reel to check what the problem is. See also Disassembling. 5
Disassembling CAUTION!! We specifically will not assume any responsibility for injuries sustained in disassembling or reassembling one of these reels. We urge that you do not attempt to repair one of these reels and recommend that you send any malfunctioning reel to us for repair. If you elect to repair one of these reels, in particular the spring rewind model as VDV- 2930-14 and VDV-3416, this instruction manual is furnished to you with an urgent request that you never permit anyone to work on one unless he has read the cautionary notes and has satisfied his supervisor that he thoroughly understands the danger of a power spring getting away from him. To prevent injury to personnel we advise to wear leather gloves during any disassembling operation. To understand the content of the reel see annex E. FAQ - What to do when the clamp disconnects from the local earth point? Connect it again when it s not broken, otherwise stop loading or unloading immediately - The resistance is above 10 Ohm? Repair if possible or replace the reel (be sure the multi meter is correct) - A part of the reel breaks (maybe during process)? Stop loading or unloading immediately until the reel is fixed again or replaced. - The reel runs bad or doesn t completely spool back? Prestress the reel by give it some extra runs and try if the complete cable can be wind off the reel again. If not or in any other case replace the reel. - The spring inside doesn t work anymore? Replace the whole reel or send it back for repair. 6
