QUOTE BY AHMAD AHMAD, THE CURRENT CAF PRESIDENT DURING HIS CAMPAIGN Woman s football growth agenda is a subject at the heart of CAF President Ahmad Ahmad The rest of the world has changed in almost every sphere, why must African football remain static.

QUOTE BY GIANNI INFANTINO, FIFA PRESIDENT DURING HIS CAMPAIGN If I am elected the next FIFA President, woman s football will be a priority and this will be reflected on how FIFA distributes its development funding.

BACKGROUND OF WOMAN S FOOTBALL IN SOUTH AFRICA South African woman s football is under the leadership of Dr Danny Jordaan, whose passion is to grow the game of football amongst girls and women. SAFA is made of 341 Local Football Associations, 52 Regions and 9 Provinces, 10 associate members and one special member, the PSL. Currently SAFA has 450 000 female players in all 52 Regions. With the aim to increase the number to 1million in 2022. SAFA has Women Regional leagues played in all 52 Regions sponsored by Sasol. Currently, SAFA does not have Woman s National league, but are in the process of establishing it by 2019.

WOMAN S FOOTBALL STRUCTURES: SOUTH AFRICAN CASE STUDY SAFA has established a mass participation project called Dlala Ntombazana (play girl child) similar to FIFA project (live your goal) of encouraging more girls to play soccer. In 2013, SAFA established U13 girls league in all 341 local football associations, sponsored by the World cup legacy trust fund. The above mentioned programmes created a platform for coaches to identify talent. Provincial winners from the Regional leagues will have national playoffs annually. Women coaches and scouts will have the opportunity to select a minimum of 30 U19 girls from the national play offs

WOMAN S FOOTBALL STRUCTURES: SOUTH AFRICAN CASE STUDY cont. The 30 girls will undergo screening processes at the High Performance Centre (a centre of excellence using scientific methods of determining potential champions)to finally select potential champions. Only 25 girls are selected and placed at the High Performance Centre Academy at the University of Pretoria. Since 2004, SAFA has successfully trained 120 girls through the Centre. All 26 Universities in South Africa are compelled to register a woman s team. Currently in all universities there are 32 teams participating.

CURRENT GLOBAL STATUS OF WOMAN S FOOTBALL Currently thirty million (30,000 000) women and girls play football globally. One (1) in every ten (10) football players on the planet is a female The sixth (6 th ) FIFA Women symposium resolution was to increase the number of women football participation to sixty million (60,000 000) by 2022. 16,104 000 256, 300 1, 225 400 6,145 100 6, 327 700 87, 200

OUT OF 54 ONLY 26 FEDERATIONS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE WOMAN S AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS SINCE 1991. Central Africa (UNIFFAC) East Africa (CECAFA) Cameroon Congo DR Congo Equatorial Guinea Ethiopia Kenya Tanzania Uganda Non Regional Member Reunion North Africa (UNAF) Southern Africa (COSAFA) Algeria Egypt Morocco Tunisia Angola Mozambique Namibia South Africa Zambia Zimbabwe West Africa (WAFU) Ghana Guinea Ivory Coast Mali Nigeria Senegal Sierra Leone

WOMAN S FOOTBALL S CHALLENGES GLOBALLY Cultural barriers Teenage pregnancy 23% member associations has dedicated staff for woman s football in the African Continent. 8% women serve in their countries executive committees. 7% coaches are women. 10% referees are women Lack of adequate representation of women in football leadership roles Under resourced Woman s football is on a voluntarily basis with little or no compensation Limited participation in key roles

HOW TO EXPAND THE PRACTISE OF WOMAN S FOOTBALL Key focus areas: Woman s Football to be played at school level, this will encourage participation and increase the numbers. Establishment of leagues at local, regional and national level. This will promote competition at all levels. Establishment of woman s football academies. This will produce champions that are able to compete at the highest level. Adopting a scientific approach into our development programs which includes psychology and life skills. This will further assist with the transformation of developing a holistic player.

HOW TO EXPAND THE PRACTISE OF WOMAN S FOOTBALL cont. Lobby FIFA for consistent funding to establish woman s national leagues for all African federations. Partner with Government. Secure corporate buy in (especially companies that produce products used by women). Intercontinental Competition similar to the champion league for men. Create non gender based opportunities for coaches to participate in the national teams and for female referees at tournaments Endorsement of women key positions in the constitution.

THANK YOU
