SMOKIES PARK CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY According to Tennessee Smokies general manager Brian Cox, the last 10 years have been the most exciting in the 100-plus-year history of the Smokies franchise. With a new ballpark, a hurricane-aided league co-championship and hillside infernos, who can argue? Smokies Park opened its doors on April 20, 2000, and has provided baseball fans, families and especially Smokies staff members with treasured memories ever since. "The first time we set the hillside on fire during a fireworks show was July 1, 2000," Cox said. "There were 20 staff members trying to put it out with fire extinguishers. I'm calling off the show when the mayor of Sevierville calls me on the radio and says 'the rest of the fire department is on the way-go ahead and keep shooting the show.'" It's that focus on entertainment, combined with a deep sense of community involvement, that makes Smokies Park an attractive destination for Sevier County citizens as well as the 10 million tourists that visit the Smoky Mountains region each year. "Initially, the City of Sevierville saw us as more of a tourist attraction," Cox said. "But one thing that's grown for us is that we've become more of a part of the fabric of what goes on in the Sevier County area. We're a member of at least 15 Chambers of Commerce each of our staff members have a chamber that they're actively involved with." Smokies Park has also become a landmark because of its unique setting and fan- Year W-L Finish Playoffs 2000 70-69 1st, East none 2001 80-60 T-1st West none 2002 69-71 2nd, East none 2003 72-67 2nd, East 1st-round loss to Carolina 2004 69-71 3rd, East Southern League Co-Champions 2005 64-76 3rd, North none 2006 70-69 3rd, Norh none 2007 73-65 2nd, North 1st-round loss to Huntsville 2008 62-77 5th, North none 2009 12-9 1st, North 1 Southern Bases, Vol. X, Issue 2

friendly layout. Nestled on a large hillside that spans the entire distance of the outfield wall, Smokies Park provides an intimate setting that immerses fans in the game. The park also features an open concourse, guaranteeing an unobstructed view of the field from anywhere on the concourse. "The open concourse was a new concept from architects in 2000, and we were lucky to be one of the first [parks with that feature]," Cox said. "When you walk into the park, you walk into the upper level, so the worst seat in the house is only 20 rows from home plate." The close proximity has given the most faithful Smokies fans a front-row seat for four different major league affiliates in the last decade: the Toronto Blue Jays (2000-02), the St. Louis Cardinals (2003-04), the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-06) and the Chicago Cubs (2007-present). Many notable current stars for each of these teams have stepped in the batter's box and toed the rubber at Smokies Park (see graphic below). The Smokies were affiliated with the Cardinals when, due to the threat of bad weather stemming from Hurricane Ivan, they were declared Southern League co-champions with Mobile in 2004. Tennessee had defeated Chattanooga three-games-to-one in the Eastern Division Playoffs and was set to battle Mobile for the league title. As is normally the case in Minor League Baseball, Cox recognizes the success of Smokies Park as a total team effort. "There are so many people, from part-time to full-time staff, that have already come through this park to make it what it is today. We're all lucky to have been on this ride for the last 10 years." So what can Southern League fans expect from the next 10 years of Smokies baseball? "We're always going to be a good family value," Cox said. "We're always searching for ways that fans can stretch their dollars to be able to enjoy what we do. A family of four can still get in for $20. That's special." SOUTHERN LEAGUE WEEKLY AWARDS Opening Day-April 19 Ricardo Sosa, 3B, Mobile HITTER OF THE WEEK Sosa served as the primary offensive catalyst for the red hot BayBears, who are off to an 8-2 start. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound third baseman didn't even start the season opener and only collected two hits in the first three games, but hit.609 with three homers and 10 RBI in his next six games. Sosa, a native of Miami Lakes, Fla., turned things around with a five-hit, four-rbi performance in a 13-2 victory at Huntsville on April 13. When he received the award, Sosa led the league in hits, was tied for first in homers and RBI and ranked second in slugging (.711).
