All times local to site BOLD = Home matches at Seattle Academy ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Seattle University closes out the first half of the conference season with yet another road trip, first heading to Edinburg, Texas, to face the UTRGV Vaqueros. The Redhawks then travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for an important matchup against the New Mexico State Aggies, currently at the top of the WAC standings. Seattle U looks to remain close to the conference lead as it begins to jockey for position within the WAC Tournament, now just over a month away. THE PREVIOUS WEEK: In its only match of the week, Seattle University fell into a tie for third place in the WAC standings after losing to Utah Valley, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 26-24). Seattle U fell behind 8-1 in the first set and 9-1 in the second set as the Wolverines dominated before the 10-minute intermission. The third set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes as each team hit above.340, but Utah Valley prevailed to complete the sweep. Martina Samadan led the Redhawks with eight kills, two blocks, and a.300 hitting percentage, while Matea Mamic finished with seven kills and four service aces. Seattle U came into the match averaging 2.55 blocks per set, but only earned two team blocks in the entire match Saturday. Seattle U is now 0-4 all-time against Utah Valley in Orem and has lost back-toback matches for the first time since a four-match losing streak Sept. 4-12. NCAA STATISTICAL RANKINGS: As of Oct. 12, Seattle U is seventh in the country in aces per set (1.82) and 52nd in blocks per set (2.46). Individually, Martina Samadan is fifth in the country in hitting percentage (.444), and Jelena Vujcin has moved up to seventh place in Division I in aces per set (0.51). WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For the second time in three weeks, Martina Samadan was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week Monday, Oct. 5. Against Grand Canyon and CSU Bakersfield, Samadan finished with 24 kills and just three attack errors in 33 attempts for a.636 hitting percentage, plus she earned nine total blocks. This is the second honor of the season for Samadan and the third of her Seattle U career, as she was first recognized Oct. 21, 2013, after helping the Redhawks defeat Grand Canyon, Chicago State, and Missouri-Kansas City. She earned the honor again Sept. 21, 2015, after helping Seattle U win four out of five matches during a trip to Tennessee and Florida.

SCOUTING TEXAS RIO GRANDE VALLEY: The Vaqueros enter the weekend with an 8-11 overall record, including non-conference victories over Louisiana Tech and San Jose State. Within the conference, UTRGV is 1-4, tied for sixth place in the league standings. As a team, the Vaqueros are hitting.191 and averaging 11.85 kills, 1.43 service aces, 15.78 digs, and 1.46 blocks per set. Bojana Mitrovic leads the team and the league in kills per set with 4.20, plus she also leads the team with 179 digs. The setting duties have been taken over by Dubravka Vukoja, as she is averaging 10.25 assists per set in conference play. Alisha Watson leads the Vaqueros with 29 service aces, plus she is second on the team with 182 kills. At the net, Haley Durham leads the way with 58 total blocks. SERIES HISTORY: Since UTRGV joined the WAC in 2013, Seattle U has won all four meetings between the two teams. On Oct. 4, 2013 in Edinburg, Texas, the Redhawks won in four sets, led by Iris Ivanis with 15 kills and 11 digs along with Lani Beadle with 22 digs. On Halloween 2013 in Seattle, the Redhawks again earned a 3-1 victory, with Sarah Jaeckel earning 14 kills, eight digs, and three total blocks. Last season, Seattle U swept UTRGV, then known as UTPA, in both meetings, starting Oct. 2, 2014, led by Ivanis with 15 kills and eight digs. On Nov. 1, 2014, in Edinburg, Matea Mamic led the Redhawks with 17 kills and eight digs. SCOUTING NEW MEXICO STATE: The Aggies sit at the top of the WAC standings with a 5-0 record, part of a 15-5 overall record heading into the weekend. All five NMSU losses have come against opponents from major conferences, including three opponents nationally-ranked at the time (Arizona State, Arizona, Texas). The Aggies also dropped five-set matches at Texas A&M and against Oklahoma, the only home loss so far this season for NMSU. As a team, the Aggies are hitting.279 and averaging 14.06 kills, 1.08 service aces, 13.96 digs, and 2.20 blocks per set. Gwen Murphy has been one of the best players in the league so far this season, earning 265 kills on a.437 hitting percentage along with 12 service aces and 67 total blocks. The setting duties have been split between Brianna Ainsworth (6.05 assists per set) and Taylor Livoti (5.70 assists per set). Jordan Abalos leads the team in both service aces with 19 and in digs with 212. At the net, Sasha-Lee Thomas leads the way with 83 total blocks. WHERE WE STAND: The new official Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) was released by the NCAA this past Monday, Oct. 12, and Seattle U currently ranks 161st out of 334 Division I volleyball teams. That is 11 places higher than where the Redhawks finished the 2014 campaign, 172nd place. Seattle U is third in the league in RPI, behind New Mexico State (97th) and UMKC (141st). SERIES HISTORY: In three seasons as conference foes, New Mexico State has won five of six matches over the Redhawks. The Aggies ruined Seattle U s first-ever WAC match at the Connolly Center Sept. 13, 2012, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to win the match in five sets. New Mexico State won each of the next three meetings in four sets before Seattle U finally broke through last season in Seattle, defeating New Mexico State 3-1 thanks to 15 kills by Matea Mamic, 14 kills by Martina Samadan, and 13 kills and 10 digs from Jelena Vujcin. New Mexico State won the rematch in Las Cruces, also by a 3-1 score. PLAYING FOR A CAUSE: The home match against Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday, Oct. 24, has been designated as the annual Dig Pink match, as the Redhawks join the fight against breast cancer. All donations will go to the Side-Out Foundation, an organization designed to help people with breast cancer regain control of their lives, similar to a side-out in volleyball allowing a team to regain control of the ball. More information about the organization can be found online at www.side-out.org. To make a donation before the Oct. 24 match, go to this website: https:// www.side-out.org/cb/campaigns/campaign/10835. All fans attending the match against UMKC are encouraged to wear pink. GOING THE DISTANCE: One of the reasons Seattle U found success last season was its ability to persevere in long matches, as the Redhawks went 5-1 in five-set contests during the 2014 season. In conference play, after defeating Grand Canyon in five sets on Nov. 13, the Redhawks were able to advance to the finals of the WAC Tournament thanks to dramatic five-set victories over Utah Valley and Missouri-Kansas City on back-to-back nights. In James Finley s three seasons at Seattle U, the Redhawks are 8-1 in five-set matches after defeating Missouri-Kansas City in five sets on Sept. 24. HOME AWAY FROM HOME: With the Commitment to Equity renovation of the Connolly Center North Court continuing through the fall, the Seattle University athletics department has come to an agreement with Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences for the Redhawk volleyball team to play its home matches at Seattle Academy during the 2015 season. The entrance to the gymnasium at Seattle Academy is located at 1111 13th Avenue near the corner of 13th Avenue and East Spring Street. Parking will be available in the Seattle University visitor lot, accessible by turning into the SU campus on East Marion Street off 12th Avenue. Tickets for all home Seattle U volleyball matches are available by going to the ticketing website at www.go- SeattleU.com/sutickets or by calling the Seattle U Athletics Ticket Office at 206-398-GOSU (4678).

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The rest of the Western Athletic Conference volleyball coaches believe that Seattle University will be a contender for the 2015 league title, as the Redhawks were picked to finish in third place and three Seattle U players were selected as part of the Preseason All-WAC Team. Defending WAC regular season champion Missouri-Kansas City received four first-place votes and 45 total points to lead the poll, followed closely by New Mexico State with two first-place votes and 40 total points. Seattle U picked up one first-place vote and 37 total points, finishing ahead of CSU Bakersfield, the 2014 WAC Tournament champions, as the Roadrunners received the final first-place vote and 33 total points. Utah Valley placed fifth in the poll with 28 total points, followed by Grand Canyon in sixth place with 20 points, seventh place University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with 13 points, and eighth place Chicago State with eight points. Senior middle blocker Martina Samadan, junior outside hitter Matea Mamic, and sophomore opposite side hitter Jelena Vujcin were named to the Preseason All-WAC Volleyball Team. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: James Finley begins his third season as head coach of the Seattle University volleyball team. He has a 189-160 (.542) overall record, including a 38-44 (.463) mark so far at Seattle U. In 2014, he led the Redhawks to their second straight winning conference season (8-6) and to the finals of the WAC Volleyball Tournament. Martina Samadan earned First Team All-WAC honors, while Jelena Vujcin was voted onto the WAC All-Newcomer Team. In his first season at Seattle U, he helped the Redhawks post a winning conference record (9-7) and advance to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament. Under his tutelage, Iris Ivanis earned WAC Freshman of the Year honors, while Martina Samadan joined Ivanis as Second Team All-WAC honorees. Finley served as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University for eight years, compiling a 151-116 (.566) record from 2005 to 2012. He led the Rams to four conference championship matches, including the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament title that advanced VCU into the NCAA Tournament. In 2012, Finley oversaw the team s transition to the Atlantic-10 Conference, where the Rams posted a 10-4 league record as part of a 25-6 overall mark, finishing third in the 12-team league before falling in the conference tournament semifinals. Finley went to VCU from Arizona Western College, where he served as head coach from 2001 to 2005, compiling a 137-37 (.787) record over four seasons. He had been the assistant coach at UTEP for two seasons before heading to Arizona Western. A high school volleyball coach from 1992 to 1999, Finley has run his own volleyball camps since 1995. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Sul Ross State University in 1983 and has been an instructor at Texas A&M University, Arizona Western College, and El Paso Community College. WAC TOURNAMENT: The top six eligible teams in the league standings at the end of the regular season will head to Kansas City, Mo., for the 2015 WAC Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Missouri-Kansas City Nov. 19-21 at the Swinney Recreation Center on campus. Seattle U has won at least one match in each of the previous two WAC Tournaments, reaching the semifinals in 2013 before advancing to the championship match in 2014. CATCHING UP ON THE WAC: As the first half of the conference season comes to an end, the Redhawks continue to lead the league in service aces per set (1.82). Seattle U is second in the WAC in hitting percentage (.232), third in assists per set (11.44) and blocks per set (2.46), fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.194) and kills per set (12.20), and seventh in digs per set (11.61). Individually, Kerry Lane is at the top of the rankings in assists per set (10.08). Martina Samadan returns to the top of the standings in hitting percentage (.444), plus she is third in the WAC in blocks per set (1.11) and sixth in kills per set (3.02), with Matea Mamic ninth in that category with 2.87 kills per set. Jelena Vujcin leads the way in service aces per set (0.51), followed by Mamic in third place (0.40) and Mary Orbeta in ninth place (0.28). Orbeta moved back into the top 10 in digs, currently sitting ninth in the WAC at 2.69 digs per set. Maja Stojanovic is sixth in the WAC in blocks per set at 0.93. WICKED SMART: The 2014-15 Seattle U volleyball team excelled in the classroom, earning the AVCA Team Academic Award after posting a cumulative grade point average over 3.30. Eight members of the team received Academic All-WAC recognition, including returners Iris Ivanis, Kerry Lane, Martina Samadan, and Kirstin Schauble. TOURNAMENT HONORS: At the Molten Classic Aug. 28-29 in Berkeley, Calif., Jelena Vujcin was named tournament MVP after leading the Redhawks with 29 kills, plus earning 15 total blocks, 11 digs, and five aces over the weekend. Kerry Lane was named to the All-Tournament Team, as she finished with 80 assists, 17 digs, 10 total blocks, and four aces. Maja Stojanovic was also selected to the All-Tournament Team after leading the Redhawks with 19 total blocks to go along with 11 kills. Martina Samadan was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Idaho Volleyball Classic Sept. 4-5, collecting 31 kills, eight digs, and six total blocks in the Redhawks three matches. Samadan and Vujcin were both named to the All-Tournament Team at the Middle Tennessee Invitational after helping the Redhawks post a 2-1 record with wins over VCU and Middle Tennessee.
