Jefferson County 4-H News Message from the Agent Let s talk about 4-H in Jefferson County. We want everyone s experience to be very positive. Everyone should have at least one project, and if the project you are interested in is not offered in your club, please call the office so we can see what we can do!! There are several projects to be involved in, and in Jefferson County some are county projects and anyone can participate in these projects. Feel free to call and find out what is available. Remember, when projects, activities, events and contests are mentioned in the newsletter, and you are wondering about them, please call the office to find out more about what is going on. Please let us help make your 4-H experience all it can be! Big Time in D9 (District Roundup) The annual District 9 4-H Conference in which all the district events will be held is on April 26th & 27th in Alvin. For those of you that participated in the County Food Show, Fashion Show or Roundup, and those that want to participate in S.E.T Poster Contest, Photography Fashion Story Boards or Food Challenge this conference is for you. The 1st place winners in the Food Show, all the participants in the Fashion Show and Roundup are eligible to represent Jefferson County at District. All entry paperwork Validation for District Horse Show If you are planning to participate in the District or State Horse Show you will need to validate your horse(s) by April 15th ($10). If you register from April 16th 30th, it s $20. The District Horse Show is scheduled for June 25-27, 2013. You will need to register your will need to be turned in by April 1st so we can get it to the District office by April 6th. All of you participating will need to register by April 7th via 4-H Connect. You all have profiles, so if you are not sure of the password please call the Extension office before the deadline so we can help. We will need volunteer judges for this huge event. If you would like to help please let me know, so we can notify the District office. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to call, 835-8461. horse on 4-H Connect. Youth Council News: The next Youth Council meeting will be held on April 15th, 6:30 p.m. We will have applications available for officer elections. If you want to run for an office then you won t want to miss this meeting. Remember to run for an office, you must already hold the office of President, Vice President, Council Delegate or Teen Leader in your club for the upcoming year. The Adult Leaders Task Force or Association is comprised of parents, project leaders and club managers. This organization supports the youth in Jefferson County by fundraising, community service, and providing money for county & district contests and events. If you would like to run for an office, please attend the next Adult Leaders meeting on. Grace 4-H: is collecting shoes for a local cause. Cary Perry placed 1st in the Simbrah Heifer class, Reserve Division Champion and Reserve Champion Overall; Logan Perry placed 2nd in his class. Savannah Westbrook got 2nd in her class at the Houston Livestock & Rodeo for her pig. There were over 5100 pigs and she was 119 in the sale. Alex & Hardy Guajardo: At the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, Alex won Grand Champion for his terrariums and photography. Hardy placed 6th for his terrarium. Katelyn & Lauren Kelly: Lauren placed 2nd for her terrarium, and Katelyn placed 3rd at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Elsie Morris-Thomas showed cavies at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and won Best in Show. Whitney Choate placed 16th in the Dairy Judging at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Senior Leadership Lab 2013 Senior Leadership Lab for ages 14-19, will be held in Brownwood on June 17th-19th. The purpose of Leadership Lab is intended to help young people develop and practice leadership skills through recreation and education. Activities are designed to build teamwork, knowledge and skills, as well as encourage camaraderie among youth. The registration deadline is May 26th. Look for more information as it becomes available. If you are interested, please call the 4-H office so I can e-mail you the brochure.

Volume 11, Issue 4 Page 3 Validation Tags for Majors Swine: If you are interested in showing pigs in Dallas you will need to order validation tags by April 29th. The cost of each tag is $9.00. Lamb/Goat: If you are interested in showing a lamb or goat in Dallas you will need to order validation tags by April 17th. Please call as soon as possible as this is a short turn around time to order tags. The cost is $9.00 Steer: If you are planning to show steers in ANY of the major shows you will need to order steer tags. The cost of each tag is $9.00 and due when you place your order. The deadline to order tags is April 17th. ARE YOU PREPARED!! Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) I know we don t want to think about this, but hurricane season is once again, around the corner. Texas Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) is a collaborative educational network dedicated to educating citizens about disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Texas EDEN is a part of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and is affiliated with National Extension Disaster Education Network. The EDEN site is intended to accommodate Texas A&M AgriLife Extension agents and all Texas citizens by sharing education resources to reduce the impact of natural and man-made disasters for individuals, families and communities. You can find lots of information by visiting the EDEN site at: http://texashelp.tamu.edu/ County Rifle Match The County Rifle Match will be held on April 13th at the Golden Triangle Gun Club. Anyone who is planning to participate in this event will need to: 1)have a membership form on file; 2)paid their $10 project fee. Please call the Extension office or let Mr. Maxwell know if you will participate as you will need to turn in a eligibility form (pink form) before participating in the event. The District Rifle Match will be held on May 11th in Rosenberg. You will need to let Mr. Maxwell know if you will participate by April 18th. Also, will need to register via 4-H Connect by April 28th and the fee is $10.00 per person, per contest.

Page 4 Jefferson County 4-H News BBQ Fundraiser & King/Queen Contest 2012 King, Logan Perry & Queen, Whitney Choate 2012 Royal Court: Maddie Barrera, Lairen Calhoun, Katie Cartwright, Whitney Choate, Alex Guajardo, Logan Perry This is a fund raiser to support the activities and events of Jefferson County 4-H. The date of the event is April 20, 2013, and we will put the dinners together. Anyone who purchased tickets will pick up their dinners and/or ribs on that day only. We hope your pre-sales will go as well or better than last year. We will again have a 4-H BBQ Queen and/or King candidate from each club and then an overall BBQ Queen and King will be chosen from the candidates. Rules: 4-H clubs should select their candidates (1 boy &/ or 1 girl) to the Royal Court according to the highest total of individual ticket sales. There are no age requirements. They must have completed at least one (1) project to be eligible to serve as candidate. Clubs Queen/King Candidates name & all ticket sales must be turned in by April 12, 2013 Paula Guajardo & Whitney Choate preparing ribs. to the Extension Office. All candidates and their families should attend the coronation. Their club managers are encouraged to attend also. The Coronation planned for the Royal Candidates is mandatory. A group photo for the paper will be taken that day as well as individual photos for the 4-H BBQ Poster. This year s King/Queen will each receive a buckle along with a monetary gift. Also there will be a drawing for a BBQ grill. The cost of the ticket for the drawing is $1. Parents & Leaders preparing dinners. This will be a huge fundraising effort which will require everyone s help and cooperation. So mark your calendars for April 20, 2013 to help during the event and sell those tickets.

Page 5 Jefferson County 4-H News Spring Paper Clover Campaign As part of their continuing support & partnership with the National 4-H Council and Tractor Supply Company, (TSC) we will kick off spring with a Paper Clover Promotion which starts May 8-19, 2013. For every clover purchased a portion will come back to the Jefferson County 4-H program. During the fall clover promotion, Jefferson County 4-H received proceeds in the amount of $397.20. This year Tractor Supply will offer $5 clovers as well as $1 clovers. You will receive a coupon from Purina each clove purchased. Thanks to everyone who supported 4- H by buying clovers when they visited Tractor Supply. We hope you will get the word out continue to support 4-H during this Spring promotion. Multiple County Skeet Shoots Please let me know if you would like more information on the following skeet shooting events: McCulloch County 4-H Whiz Bang: April 20th; registration deadline is April 5th. Garza County 4-H Trap Shoot: April 20th; registration deadline is April 15th. Montgomery County 4-H Invitational Whiz Bang: April 27th; registration deadline is April 22nd. Callahan County Fun Shoot: May 18th; registration deadline is April 29th. Kerr 4-H Skeet & Trap Invitational: May 31st June 2nd; registration deadline is May 10th. Bandera 4-H Whiz Bang: June 22nd & 23rd; registration deadline is June 1st.
