Driver Education Ch. 4: Safe Driving Rules & Regulations Ms. Marx
Speed Control Speed is one of the most common contributing factors of fatal & other types of accidents School zones, business or residential districts
New Jersey Speed Limits Safe Corridors Safe Corridors law doubles fines on various state highways for a variety of driving offenses, including speeding and aggressive driving
Passing
Pass Only When Safe: Passing should be done on the left Passing is only allowed on the right if there are more than 1 lane going in the same direction Passing on the right is allowed when the motorist ahead is making a left turn NEVER pass on the right shoulder this is against the law!
A motorist should not pass On a hill or curve At a street crossing At a railroad crossing On narrow bridges/underpasses, tunnels When a sign or center line prohibits When a vehicle that stopped to let a pedestrian cross
Yielding the Right of Way Emergency Vehicles when police cars, fire engines and ambulances are giving warning signs Buses When re-entering entering the flow of traffic Postal Vehicles When vehicle is seeking to re-enter enter the flow of traffic
Yielding the Right Of Way Motorized or Mobility-assistance devices When in a crosswalk or seeking to cross a road Other Vehicles that are already in the intersection
Pedestrians in a Crosswalk A motorist must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks Fine up to $500, up to 25 days in jail, community service, license suspension up to 6 months, and 2 points Be aware at right on red Be alert at all times
Intersections Controlled A traffic intersection that is regulated by signals, signs, or police officer Uncontrolled No traffic sign or regulatory device at an intersection
Controlled Intersection Who goes first?? Green Goes First: First to arrive, first to drive
Controlled Intersection Pink Goes First: Who goes first? Arrive at the same time, left yields to right Always come to a COMPLETE STOP before proceeding through a stop sign.
Uncontrolled Intersection Motorist must reduce speed and be ready to stop if any traffic is coming from the left or right. Treat intersection as if there is a YIELD sign Where might we find uncontrolled intersections?
Traffic Circles Be on the lookout for signs that will instruct motorist who has the right of way Generally the traffic already in the circle has the right of way
Entering & Exiting Highways Enter through an acceleration lane Exit through a deceleration lane These are both extra lanes added onto highways for the purpose of entering/exiting
Acceleration Lane Use the lane to speed up to the speed of traffic already on the highway Use your turn signal to indicate entrance Do not come to a complete stop in the acceleration lane Yield to traffic & find a gap in traffic in right lane to enter when safe
Acceleration Lane
Deceleration Lane Use your turn signal to indicate exit Avoid stopping in the deceleration/exit lane If you miss your exit, continue on to the next exit NEVER reverse down the highway or deceleration/exit lane
Special Highway Conditions Weave Lane: Both and exit & entrance lane for a highway Curves: Adjust steering and speed when approaching a curve Vehicle tend to keep going straight Construction Areas: Always be alert for construction areas Adjust speed and position
Deceleration/Exit Lane
Turning Regulations Right Turn on Red In NJ, unless a No Turn on Red sign is posted, a turn on red is permitted after the motorist comes to a complete stop and checks for traffic Stay in lane closest to curb, do not cross over
Left Turns Use Turn Signal Approach turn as close as possible to center of road Keep steering wheel straight Yield to oncoming traffic; wait for a gap Turn left into the lane to the right of the center line
