Digital Update: Week of December 1, 2014 What s Inside Spotlight: Mutton Bustin' Equi-Stat: The Magic Cross FYI: What to Ask Before Buying a Horse In the Know: The Paws Cause What s Online: Tack talk Health Matters What s New Subscribe To QHN Shop A Grand Idea More than 300 guests wined and dined in the Stampede Room of the Fort Worth Stockyards on Nov. 21 at Ride TV s exclusive launch party, where the new television network announced its recent air on KlowdTV and Armstrong Cable. Ride TV features entertaining reality shows, children s programming, talk shows, biographies, travel shows, championship events and other programming, all with an equine twist. Ride TV covers all breeds, all disciplines, all of the time, and produces original, high-definition content while showcasing the horse lifestyle and culture. Some of the guests included ProRodeo Hall of Famer Roy Super Looper Cooper, along with his sons, two-time Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association World Champion tie-down roper Tuf, and roping world contenders Clint and Clif; Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Rider and cutting horse trainer Chubby Turner and his wife, Ginger; actor Ricky Schroder who starred in "Lonesome Dove," and shows like "Silver Spoons" and "NYPD Blue," and his wife, Andrea; and John Paul DeJoria, the co-founder of Paul Mitchell hair care, Patron Tequila and Spirits, and The Arbor rehabilitation center, which offers equine therapy (hippotherapy), along with his wife Eloise. Craig Morris, president of Ride TV, said DeJoria came onto the scene with Ride TV after hearing what Morris had planned for the upcoming network. He and his wife are benefactors, and they own a drug and rehab facility that uses horses to help with the process called The Arbor around Round Rock, Texas, Morris said. We went down there because they were doing really cool things with these horses and we wanted to do a story on them, and when we got done interviewing them, John Paul said, This is the greatest idea I ve ever heard. I d like to be involved. DeJoria has always had a fondness for horses and that is partially why he knew he needed to be involved with Ride TV, but most of all, he knew that the future was bright for the company. After I heard about what was going on, I thought, Wow, why hasn t anyone done this before? Having a station that is high quality and high resolution and talk about every discipline of horses; I thought that this is definitely going to be big, DeJoria said. There is no doubt in my mind, and when you re around horse people like I am, they re just wonderful folks! So it s nice people, a good industry and an unbelievable future for this television station. Morris also looks forward to the future of the network, and said you don t have to know how to ride horses to enjoy Ride TV. The possibilities are endless, because really there is an inherent love of horses in humans, Morris said. And if you think about it, every great civilization has been built on the back of a horse. So there s something in our DNA that draws us to the horse. You may not be a rider, but think of the tens of thousands of people who (Left to right) Ride TV President Craig Morris, Eloise and John Paul DeJoria, and Ride TV CEO Michael Fletcher Ricky Schroeder describing his excitement for the new network. wentto see War Horse, Secretariat and Black Beauty that just love great horse stories. Its been a great, great adventure for us, and its one of those things, the sky is the limit for us now. Moon Walker Photography Moon Walker Photography

FYI What to Ask Before Buying a Horse Before you buy your first horse, there are some questions you should ask the previous owner that may insure you ll be pleased with your purchase. In most cases, a seller isn t obligated to disclose negative information about a horse. It s the buyer s responsibility to ask the right questions to help determine if the horse is the appropriate choice for him or her. Asking the right questions will increase your chances of finding a perfect match. What to ask 1. Is this horse suitable for my skill level? If the seller indicates that a horse needs an intermediate rider and you re a novice rider, don t go any further. 2. Does this horse have training and/or experience in my chosen event? If you re a novice, you want a horse with experience in your discipline. The more training experience you have, the less experienced the horse can be. 3. Why is this horse for sale? With any large purchase a house or car, for instance you must decide how much faith to put in a seller s comments. Ask questions until you re satisfied that you understand why the horse is being sold. 4. Has this horse been lame, had colic issues or had any other physical problems? Some welltrained horses might have physical problems that prevent them from performing satisfactorily. You need to know what possible problems you re buying and decide if you have the time, energy, patience, experience or budget to deal with them. 5. Does this horse have bad habits? Some habits are easier to fix than others. Do you feel you have the experience and skills to safely correct a bad habit? 6. Does this horse easily load in a trailer? If you re serious about the horse, have the owner demonstrate the horse s trailer-loading abilities. 7. How much has this horse been ridden outside an arena? Arenas provide a controlled environment for horses, and many things can spook a horse when that sense of protection is removed. Total Prize Package for December valued at $460! FYI "It s the buyer s responsibility to ask the right questions to help determine if the horse is the appropriate choice for him or her." QHN File Photo 8. Has this horse been exposed to roads and traffic? This is a good question if you re going to ride on or near roads. 9. What does this horse shy from? The owner should know the answer to this question. His or her input will help you anticipate any bad behavior. 10. How does this horse behave for his or her farrier and veterinarian? Be sure to ask about a horse s temperament. Some farriers or veterinarians won t work with a horse that s unsafe or difficult to handle. 11. What type of bit has the horse been ridden with? If you re inexperienced, consider buying the same bit that the horse is currently being ridden with, assuming the horse is comfortable with the bit and you have enough control. 12. What is this horse s daily feed ration? Write down what the seller feeds the horse. Note the type and quantity of feed the horse is currently fed, as well as the feeding frequency. 13. Is this horse registered? Ask the seller to show you the horse s original registration paperwork. Make sure the horse you re buying matches the description on the document. Remember, a party other than the registered owner might be selling the horse. Gerrie Barnes

IN THE KNOW Looking for a new pet to share your holiday celebration? The Paws Cause, a national dog rescue and adoption organization, will be hosting a dog adoption opportunity at the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas. The adoptions will be held the weekend of the Futurity finals, Dec. 12-13, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day in the hallway of the Richardson Bass Building at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. For more information, contact Susie Reed at 580-490-1103. I m a very motivated person, so every accomplishment just adds to it. I can t tell you how excited I am for tomorrow or next year, or the next 20 years. When I was 25, 24, or 20 years old, I didn t expect it to feel like it does right now. I expected it to come when I was a little bit older.
