U6 U9 MINIS COACHES & MANAGER HANDBOOK 2013

PAGE 2 WELCOME AGE GROUP COORDINATORS MESSAGE Welcome Managers and Coaches to Mosman Junior Rugby Club one of the largest junior rugby clubs in NSW. We hope you are looking forward to a great season of Minis rugby in 2013. Importantly, we want kids to enjoy themselves and have fun whilst developing core skills, fostering strong friendships and gaining Rugby experience. Your roles as Coaches and Managers are pivotal to this. U6 U9 train on Thursday nights from 5.30pm 6.30pm & play matches on Saturday. TEAM SUPPORT Each team must have a COACH and a MANAGER Where applicable, appointing an ASSISTANT COACH might be prudent Each team needs a REFEREE REFEREE required for every home game Get as many parents involved as possible in all aspects of the team operation Every child should have someone at training / matches with responsibility for them we are not a babysitting service. Also important that parents are around in case of a serious injury Don t be afraid to delegate tasks or ask for help from parents. In most cases parents are keen to help out & often just need to be asked

PAGE 3 CLUB BEHAVIOUR GUIDELINES The Club is proud of its reputation for good sportsmanship Under no circumstances will the Club condone any verbal abuse of opposition players, officials or referees by our players or supporters please remember the referee s decision is final ARU and SJRU have developed CODES OF GOOD CONDUCT aimed at maintaining the elements of enjoyment and satisfaction in Rugby Making Adults aware that young people play to satisfy themselves and not necessarily to satisfy adults or members of their own peer group To constantly remind administrators, coaches, referees and parents that Rugby must be administered, taught and provided for the good of those young people. It is their game. ALL parents should read the BEHAVIOUR GUIDELINES on the club website at www.mosmanjrc.org.au and click on the heading Code of Conduct It is the Team Managers responsibility to monitor and maintain expectations of behaviour INSURANCE The ARU Sports Injury and Liability Insurance Scheme provides a basic level of insurance for players, members and officials associated with the Club All participants Coaches, players, officials must be registered with the ARU in order to obtain coverage Managers must confirm that every player is properly registered The benefits through this plan are not comprehensive and as such the ARU encourage all players and officials to take out their own private health insurance and top up coverage

PAGE 4 COACHES AND MANAGER ROLES Get all parents to help out in some way at training those that aren t helping should be socialising, supporting the Canteen etc. TEAM LISTS Will be distributed by the Club Registrar Only individual Team lists will be distributed to each team Coaches and Managers Please coach only the kids listed on your list, refer any parent demanding that their child be in your team, firstly to the Age Group Coordinator WHEN COACHING, TEACHING OR REFEREEING Keep it simple, free flowing and enjoyable Be clear & concise Let the players develop skills, with safety being a priority Discourage any dangerous action or unsafe practice Adopt an educative, positive re enforcement approach Ensure that players receive an equal opportunity to participate, regardless of ability Don t be afraid to discipline players who misbehave remember as a Coach, you are there primarily to educate them Consider setting some team behaviour ground rules

TEAM GEAR PAGE 5 Balls mark them with permanent marker & consider spray painting Pump will also be an electric compressor pump at the Canteen on Thursday nights Cones mark them with permanent marker, consider buying extra ones First aid kit Ice packs also recommended for training and game days We would like the gear back at end of season, so please look after it Jerseys Minis are not playing set positions so numbers do not reflect field positions Gear Mouth Guards and football boots are compulsory requirements As a general safety measure, players are encouraged to wear headgear and shoulder pads only if they feel more comfortable doing so Olympus Sports at Neutral Bay are the official gear provider & will also carry surplus Club shorts, socks and polar fleeces which will be available for sale GROUNDS NEED TO BE DRESSED FOR TRAINING AND HOME MATCHES For home matches, Age Group Coordinators must arrange storeroom keys for a Mosman team manager, of one of the teams playing in the first match at Balmoral For home matches, need to start dressing grounds at least 20 minutes prior with club cones and goal post protectors For home matches, if you are the last teams playing on field bring in club cones and protectors and put away in storage room please ensure room is locked and key returned to Age Group Coordinator Allocated training locations for teams must be adhered to as space is very limited Recommended that each team clearly marks out its designated area an A3 copy of the allocated training locations will be posted in the glass display cabinet adjacent to the Canteen Each week a map of home ground match layout will be distributed and posted on the Club website as well as being posted in the glass display cabinet adjacent to the Canteen

PAGE 6 TEAM COMMUNICATION Team Manager is the primary point of contact for teams Team Manager should ensure parents are aware of game time and location as early as possible Arrive to game at least 20 minutes prior for warm up Responsible for team substitutions and ensuring ALL players receive equal game time Advise parents of cancellation of games due to wet weather Team Manager to set a roster for parents to bring half time oranges, drinks Foster support for social activities within the Club You will receive parents email addresses during the course of the season under the Clubs privacy policy these must NOT be used under ANY circumstances other than for Club purposes (recommend using Bcc Blind Copy option) MATCH REPORTS Make sure game is reported fairly and all players are mentioned No criticism, sledging or making fun of anyone No scores reported for the minis
