In second-year head coach Andrea Gorski s first year back on The Hilltop, the 1992 Bradley graduate led the Braves to improved overall and MVC win totals for the first time in a season since 2008-09. Junior college transfer Shunseere Kent is scoring a team-high 9.7 points per game and has a team-best 10 double-digit scoring efforts after scoring 10 or more in seven of the last 11. One of the top returning post players in the MVC, junior Vanessa Markert is shooting 45 percent from the field on the year and is averaging 8.1 points per outing this season. A MVC All-Freshman team selection last year, sophomore forward Chelsea Brackmann has started eight games. She ranks sixth in the MVC in rebounding at 6.4 boards per game and adds 8.0 points per game. The most experienced players on the roster, senior guards Danielle Brewer and Anneke Schlueter have each started at least 15 games this season. Schlueter is the team s active career scoring leader with 916 points to rank 23rd at Bradley and had a streak of 68 consecutive starts snapped against Illinois-Chicago (Dec. 2). Schlueter averages 7.6 points per game and owns a 1.89 assist-to-turnover ratio. Brewer has averaged 9.6 points per game in MVC play to raise her season average to 7.2 points per outing. Highlighting the group of newcomers is freshman Gabi Haack, who has emerged as one of the top three-point threats in the MVC (42.7 3FG%), while scoring 9.4 points per game and a team-best 11.9 ppg in Valley action. Gorski and the Braves will look to build on last year s improvement and could become the first Bradley team to increase its overall and Valley win total in back-to-back seasons since 2000-01 & 2001-02. 2017-18 Bradley Braves Numerical Roster No. Name Yr. Gorski owns a 22-27 (.449) record at Bradley after guiding the Braves to a three-win improvement both overall and in MVC play in her first season back on The Hilltop. In her six-plus years as a head coach, which includes five years as head coach at Concordia in Ann Arbor, Mich., Gorski owns a 128-86 (.598) overall record. She returned to Bradley after spending the previous three seasons as Associate Head Coach at Valley rival Southern Illinois. While at Concordia, Gorski led the Cardinals to three consecutive NAIA Tournament appearances. northern iowa series history The Panthers hold a 39-34 advantage in the all-time series, but the Braves are 22-13 at home against UNI. Northern Iowa owns a 12-game win streak in the series, which includes five consecutive victories at Renaissance Coliseum. drake series history Drake has an eight-game win streak in the series with Bradley and the Bulldogs have a 56-15 overall edge in the series. The Braves are 10-24 in home games against the Bulldogs, but Drake has won six of the seven meetings at Renaissance Coliseum. Last time out Bradley scored the first 29 points of the game at Evansville and never looked back en route to a 117-59 victory over the Purple Aces Sunday. Six Braves scored in double figures, paced by freshman Gabi Haack s 20 points and eight rebounds. Junior Shunseere Kent scored 11 of Bradley s first 13 points and finished with a season-best 18 points. The Braves shot 64.4 percent from the field for the third-best field goal percentage in school history and made a school record 17 three-pointers while shooting 65.4 percent from three-point range. four-game home stand Bradley opens a four-game Missouri Valley Conference home stand Friday night, hosting Northern Iowa. The Braves, which have played the second most road games in the MVC this season at 10, will have a four-game MVC home stand for the third consecutive year. Prior to the three-year stretch with at least one four-game Valley home stand, Bradley had not played four consecutive conference games at home since 1994-95. Despite an 0-2 conference mark at home this season, the Braves have won five of their last eight league games at Renaissance Coliseum dating back to last season. Two of Bradley s three home losses this year have been decided by two points or less and the lone exception (Missouri State) was tied with less than five minutes to play. One for the record book Bradley s 117-59 victory over Evansville was one for the record book, with the Braves scoring the most points in a Missouri Valley Conference game in league history. Opening the game by scoring the first 29 points, Bradley went on to hit a program record 17 three-pointers which tied for the third-best total in MVC history. Overall, the Braves shot 64.4 percent from the field, which is best by a Valley team since 2012-13 (Creighton at Drake) and third-best effort in school history (best since Feb. 22, 1986). Bradley dished out 34 assists to tie for the third-best total in league history and is second all-time on The Hilltop behind the school record of 38 assists against Chicago State on Dec. 12, 1981. In addition, BU s 62 points in the first half was the team s highest scoring half of basketball since a 65-point first half against Indiana State on Feb. 21, 1993. first half success This weekend s home games will mark the halfway point of the Missouri Valley Conference schedule with Bradley currently tied with Friday s opponent Northern Iowa for fourth in the league standings at 4-3. The Braves are 4-3 to start Valley play for the first time since opening the 2009-10 conference slate with a 6-3 record. While Bradley has nine previous starts to league play of 5-4 or better, only two of those have come in the last 20 years with the 2008-09 (5-4) and 2009-10 (6-3) squads doing so. Head coach Andrea Gorski has been part of three of the previous 5-4 starts in program history with her sophomore and junior squads both opening Gateway Conference play 6-3 and her freshman team of 1988-89 starting off 5-4. balanced attack Sophomore Chelsea Brackmann matched freshman Gabi Haack for team-high scoring honors at Indiana State (Jan. 19) with 14 points, marking the first time Brackmann has paced the Braves in scoring this season. Through 18 games, Bradley has had eight different players lead the team in scoring in a game. This season, six Braves are scoring 7.2 points per outing or more. Bradley has not had six players score better than seven points per game in a season since 2013-14 when six individuals averaged 8.1 ppg or more. The Braves have also been rebounding by committee with eight different individuals leading the team in rebounding at least once this season. road warriors For the 12th time in program history Bradley opened conference play with five of seven games on the road, but the Braves won four games away from home when starting with five of seven league games away from home for just the second time. Second-year head coach Andrea Gorski was part of the only other Bradley team to win four road contests when playing five of seven to start conference play on the road, with her sophomore (1989-90) season featuring a 5-2 start to the Gateway Conference schedule (4-1 on the road) en route to a 12-6 conference record and fourth-place league finish. Overall, Bradley s five road wins are the most since 2012-13 (6) and the Braves had not posted four road league wins since 2009-10 (4). braves add to roster Second-year Bradley head coach Andrea Gorski made a rare mid-year addition to the roster on Jan. 11 with the ceremonial signing of nine-year old Jalene Woolford to a Letter of Intent. For the first time since at least the 1978-79 season, Bradley had three straight games with 10 or less turnovers and first time at the NCAA Division I level. BU is fourth in the MVC in turnovers per game (14.8) and has averaged 13.1 turnovers per outing at Renaissance Coliseum. Bradley is 8-2 on the year when turnovers are tied or BU has an advantage and 12-3 over the last 15 such games dating back to last season with two of the losses against Southern Illinois. Under head coach Andrea Gorski the Braves are 13-6 when at least matching the opponents turnover total. In Valley play, Bradley has averaged 12.4 turnovers per game and the team s season average of 14.8 per game would be the lowest in program history. chart climber Senior Anneke Schlueter enters a four-game home stand poised to become the all-time leading scorer in Renaissance Coliseum history. Schlueter, who has scored in double figures in three of the last four outings, has made 8-of-14 three-pointers over the last four games after a 4-for-21 slump the previous 10 games. She already owns the Renaissance Coliseum career record with 73 career triples and is 10 points from breaking former teammate Leti Lerma s Renaissance Coliseum career scoring record of 480 career points. Schlueter passed Lerma on Bradley s career scoring list last week and is currently 23rd in school history with 916 career points, 10 points from passing Jenn Jolley (920 points) and Ashley Chelleen (925 points) for 21st in career scoring at Bradley. immediate impact Junior College transfer Shunseere Kent has emerged as Bradley s leading scorer at 9.7 points per contest and has scored in double figures a team-best 10 times in her first year on The Hilltop. Bradley s first JUCO transfer since Latasha Hollingshed wrapped up her career in 2011-12, Kent was the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year as a sophomore after averaging 15.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, in addition to earning Second Team NJCAA All-American honors in 2016-17. Hollingshed was Bradley s last junior college transfer to have 10 or more double digit scoring efforts in a season, doing so 10 times as a junior in 2010-11 and Kent is looking to become Bradley s first junior college transfer to score at least 9.0 points per game since Alexandra Gal (Illinois Central College) averaged 10.1 points per game as a senior in 1998-99. Kent has averaged 11.0 points per game over the last 10 outings after a season-best 18 points at Evansville (Jan. 21) and is shooting 42.5 percent from three-point range on the year, including 50 percent (12-for-24) over the last 11 contests. stepping up Senior Danielle Brewer got off to a slow start to the year, averaging 4.5 points per game in the first six outings of the year; but has scored eight or more points in seven of the last 12 contests and is averaging 9.6 points in Missouri Valley Conference play. Brewer has taken over as the team s primary ball handler and is coming off a career-best six assists in the win at Evansville. She scored a then season-best 17 points in the Jan. 5 victory at Loyola only to follow it up with a career-best 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the win at Valparaiso (Jan. 7). She also had a season-best seven rebounds and three assists to highlight the win against the Crusaders. The last Brave to make at least seven field goals with just one miss in a game was Raisa Taylor in a 22-point effort in which she was 7-for-8 from the field on Dec. 7, 2010 (at Western Illinois). Brewer is shooting 52 percent from the field against MVC opponents and has taken 56 percent of her free throw attempts this year in Valley play (18-for-25). dialed in Bradley hit four or more three-pointers in 14 consecutive games before having the streak snapped at Indiana State (Jan. 19), only to follow it up with a school record 17 three-pointers at Evansville (Jan. 21). The last time the Braves had a streak of 14 consecutive games with at least four threepointers was a 15-game stretch midway through the 2012-13 season. This season s average of 5.83 three-pointers per contest would be Bradley s best since 2006-07 (5.87 per game) and the Braves 33.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc would be the team s best mark since 2008-09 (.362). Freshman Gabi Haack has emerged as one of the top threepoint threats in the Missouri Valley Conference, shooting 42.7 percent from beyond the arc to rank third in the league and she is the only player to rank in the top 10 in the MVC in both rebounding 2017-18 MVC Standings as of 1/26 MVC Overall School W-L Pct. The final three non-conference foes are a combined 43-15 (.741). battle for illinois The Missouri Valley Conference opener between Bradley and Illinois State kicked off the recently announced Battle for Illinois rivalry series. Both men s and women s basketball teams from the four MVC schools from Illinois (Bradley, Illinois State, Loyola and Southern Illinois) will accrue points for their respective institutions in featured head-to-head competition with one point awarded for each win in the rivalry series. In the event of a tie, the following tie-breaker(s) will be utilized: 1) head-to-head results among the tied teams only; 2) MVC regular-season record; 3) overall regularseason record (conference and non-conference); 4) combined men s and women s MVC postseason tournament wins; 5) average margin of victory in the rivalry series games. The Bradley women claimed the first two points of the series with wins at Illinois State (Dec. 31) & at Loyola (Jan. 5). The Bradley women will play the final game of the 2017-18 series, wrapping up the regular-season with a home game against Illinois State on March 3. Big Comeback Bradley trailed defending Summit League champion Western Illinois 31-16 at the end of the first quarter and faced as large as an 18-point deficit before rallying to top the Leathernecks 87-80 in the final non-conference game of the year. The comeback was Bradley s largest since erasing an 18-point deficit for a 72-68 victory at Southeast Missouri State on Nov. 11, 2013. In fact, the rally was the second largest for the Braves in the eightyear history of Renaissance Coliseum, topped only by a 20-point comeback against Tennessee Tech in the opening round of the Women s Basketball Invitational on March 14, 2012. Put me in coach Freshman Gabi Haack made her first career start against Western Illinois (Dec. 28), helping Bradley rally from 18 points by down with 18 second-half points in a season-best 26-point effort. Haack tied a school single-game record by making eight threepointers to match the mark originally set by head coach Andrea Gorski at Western Illinois Jan. 27, 1990 and later done by Renee Frericks vs. Eastern Illinois (Nov. 27, 2007). After a 1-for-5 start from beyond the arc against WIU, Haack made her final seven three-point attempts including all six shots from beyond the arc in the second half. Haack s 26 points were the most in a game by a Bradley freshman since Raisa Taylor tossed in 28 points at Southern Illinois on Feb. 28, 2008. Over the last 10 games, Haack has averaged team highs of 12.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing. She leads the team with 35 three-point makes and is 34-for-75 (45.3 percent) from beyond the arc over the last 16 contests. Brackmann turned in her team-best second double-double of the year and fifth of her career. Bradley had two players with double-doubles in the same game for the first time since Mackenzie Westcott and Leah Kassing both had double-double performances in a home win against Southern Illinois back on Feb. 4, 2012. rare air While Bradley had a pair of players score in the 20 s in the home win against Western Illinois, senior Anneke Schlueter had an impressive performance of her own as she tallied 15 points, five rebounds and career highs of seven assists, three blocks and five steals. Schlueter s effort was the first game by a Brave with 15 points, five rebounds, seven assists and at least five steals since Heather Best against Western Michigan on Nov. 16, 1997. Based on available box scores in the Bradley Athletics archives Schlueter is the first player in program history to collect 15 points, five boards, seven assists, five steals along with three blocks in a game. Bradley s active career scoring leader, Schlueter is averaging 1.9 assists per game this season with a 1.89 assist-to-turnover ratio. Packing them in Bradley s sixth annual Field Trip Day presented by Prairie Farms resulted in the largest stand-alone single-game crowd for the Braves at Renaissance Coliseum. The outing against Cleveland State (Dec. 19) featured a crowd of 3,096 fans which ranks second among stand-along single game attendance figures behind a crowd of 3,128 fans on Jan. 6, 2002 against Illinois State at Robertson Memorial Field House. The six Field Trip Day attendance numbers all rank among the top eight highest attended games in the history of Renaissance Coliseum. Freshman forward Nyjah White didn t score in the season opener, but had 10 or more points in back-to-back outings against Lincoln and Illinois. In fact, White had 14 points, 13 rebounds and five assists against Lincoln (Mo.) for the earliest double-double (second career game) by a Bradley freshman since Val Wancket had a double-double in the 1987-88 season opener as a freshman. Freshman guard Gabi Haack, who has hit a team-best 35 three-pointers, has added 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per outing and freshman forward Emily Marsh is shooting 51 percent from the field while scoring 4.0 points per contest. The last time the Braves had a three-win improvement both overall and in MVC play was 2008-09 when Bradley finished 21-10 overall and 11-7 in conference action. Gorski is the only Bradley coach to lead the squad to a three-win improvement in MVC play in their first season. In fact, Bradley has not had a senior class consisting of four players which played all four seasons on The Hilltop since 2011-12 (18-16 overall). well rounded Sophomore forward Chelsea Brackmann had a big impact during her freshman season, breaking the school record for rebounds by a freshman and earned a spot on the MVC All-Freshman Team. The first Bradley player since 1991-92 and first MVC freshman since at least 1995-96 with 235 points, 200 rebounds, 45 assists, 30 blocks and 20 or more steals, Brackmann joined Eileen Yerkes (1991-92) as the only players in program history to reach those marks in a season. She was one of three freshmen in the nation to reach those numbers in 2017-18, joining Joyner Holmes of Texas (Big 12 Freshman of the Year) and Bella Alarie of Princeton (Ivy League Rookie of the Year) in the exclusive group. Brackmann scored 8.0 points per game as a freshman and is second in rebounding among returning players in the MVC in 2017-18 behind Wendi Bibbins of Indiana State at 6.7 boards per contest. In addition to breaking the school record for rebounds by a freshman, Brackmann had the most free throws made by a freshman at Bradley with 86. Brackmann has started eight contests in 2017-18, including each of the last two, averaging 6.4 rebounds (which is sixth in the MVC) to go with 8.0 points and 1.3 blocks per game this season. A member of the school s Athletics Hall of Fame, Andrea (McAllister) Gorski returned to The Hilltop when she was named the ninth head coach in program history in April 2016 and is in her second season as head coach at her alma mater. Gorski returned to Bradley from Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois, where she spent the previous three years as associate head coach on former Bradley assistant Cindy Stein s staff. During Gorski s time in Carbondale, Southern Illinois improved its overall and conference records in each of her three seasons, culminating in the first 20- win season for the Salukis in almost a decade, as well as the program s first postseason appearance since 2007. In her first year as head coach of the Braves, Gorski led Bradley to an improved overall and MVC win total in the same season for the first time since 2008-09 with the season culminating in the team s highest overall (12) and Valley (7) wins since 2012-13. The 2016-17 campaign saw Leti Lerma, who was the program s first First-Team All-MVC selection since 2008-09, become Bradley s all-time andrea gorski Bradley 92 Second Season as Bradley Head Coach Education: Bradley 92 (B.S.) College Coaching Experience: 2016- Bradley Head Coach 2013-16 Southern Illinois Associate Head Coach 2008-13 Concordia (MI) Head Coach 1992-93 Bradley Graduate Assistant Career Record: 128-86 (Seventh Season) Conference Record: 69-40 leading rebounder. In addition Chelsea Brackmann was named to the MVC s All-Freshman team. In 2016-17, Bradley had its lowest turnover total in over a decade (2005-06) in addition to the team s best rebounding average since 2011-12. The Salukis had won a total of 15 games and just five MVC contests in the three years prior to Gorski s arrival at SIU, but racked up 37 wins and 22 conference victories in Gorski s final two seasons. A native of Dearborn Heights, MI, Gorski boasts 21 years of coaching experience, including 18 years as a head coach at the collegiate and high school levels. Before joining Stein s staff at Southern Illinois, Gorski was head coach at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, MI, from 2008-13. In just five seasons, she became the winningest coach in the program s history. Inheriting a team which had never made the NAIA national tournament, Gorski s squads reached the NAIA Tournament each of her last three seasons and made consecutive Sweet 16 appearances in 2012 and 2013. During her tenure with the Cardinals, the two-time conference coach-ofthe-year selection led Concordia to a 106-59 (.667) overall mark and 58-28 (.674) conference record. In fact, Gorski s teams combined for an 80-24 (.769) overall record and 48-8 (.857) league record in her last three seasons at the school. In addition to leading Concordia to its best national ranking in program history, Gorski s achievements included mentoring three first-team All-Americans and three conference players of the year. Off the court, she served as Interim Director of Athletics at Concordia during the 2011-12 school year and was Associate Director of Athletics for her final three seasons. Gorski entered coaching shortly after graduating from Bradley in 1992 with a degree in business management and administration, serving as a graduate assistant for the Braves in 1992-93 before venturing into the private sector. She returned to coaching three years later, taking over as head coach of Ladywood High School in February 1996. She led her squad to a 184-99 (.650) record in 12 seasons at the Livonia, MI, school and the Blazers claimed 11 district titles and a pair of conference championships during her prep coaching career. Gorski was a threetime Catholic League Coach of the Year and was selected as the state coach of the year in 2005 by the Associated Press, Detroit Free Press and Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. A 1996 Bradley Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Gorski was a first-team All-Gateway Conference selection as a senior in 1991-92.
