VMC Expert Tip Do I need a round shape or an O Shaugnessy shape? It all depends on the fish you are going after... The round bend offers the advantage of having a slightly wider gap than the O Shaugnessy treble. It results in a better and easier setting of the hook. On the other hand, the round bend will open more easily. For those reasons, most freshwater applications will use the round bend. Most freshwater fish will not apply enough pressure on the hook to open it, with the exception of very powerful species. VMC recommends using round bend trebles to benefit from the wider gap. For saltwater applications or freshwater applications aimed at heavy and powerful fish, think O Shaugnessy. The smaller gap on O Shaugnessy is not an issue as most of the time these species are much more aggressive and will grab the entire lure. What is important is the increased resistance to opening that the O Shaugnessy design will offer.
