Page 4 Sharks Page Bite 4 Coaching Hints In our ongoing reports into coaching youth basketball we take a look at the areas that should be stressed at the age groups of 13-14 year olds (year 7 and 8) This age group need to play 5 on 5 basketball. This is how they can use their skills and also rate their level of skills by playing against others peers. As a coach you should teach This age should be using regular size ball (girls size 6, boys size 7) and 10 foot ring (3.08 metre). Full court man to man defences. Teaching your player positions on the court eg. point guard, centre, wing etc. Free flowing offence, uptempo, good spacing, read the defence. Equal time but keeping in mind having some of your better players on to help your newer/beginning players. Placing your players in competitive, game-like situations to practice their skills. You can also use fun drills to have a fun relaxed environment. Still treating your competition games like fun scrimmages. Too many coaches get caught up with what is happening on the scoreboard rather than teaching their players how to play. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year John Suva Coaching Junior Representative Positions We have now finalized our teams for our 2015 Junior Representative program. We are urgently awaiting interested person s to help with certain teams that are in need of a coach. Positions still vacant: Under 14 girls division 2 Under 14 boys division 3 Anyone interested please see John Suva for more information. Smoke Free Policy Sutherland Basketball introduced a smoke free policy in 2010 which is still in place.
