Winter Reminders 2017-18 Volunteer Park Patrol Please review the Volunteer Handbook and Park Patrol Manual posted on the Volunteer Resource Center at www.threeriversparks.org/volunteer. Also review Park District information for your park. Any questions that you have may be directed to park staff, your unit supervisor or Volunteer Office staff. Patrol Procedures Summary Schedule Shifts Before Patrolling _ Schedule all patrol shifts in advance (preferably 48 hours or more if using VicNet or email). Anything less than 48 hours be sure to speak directly with unit supervisor (phone or in person). (See attached supervisor contact list.) Report Patrol Hours After Patrolling _ VicNet is preferred. Patrollers new to a park must contact the unit supervisor before using VicNet for their park(s) Go to: www.threeriversparks.org/volunteer/resource-center.aspx for a link to VicNet and instructions. Your logon is your email. Create your own password. _ Other options: _ VicTouch, a computer clock in/out system, is used at some sites. You will need your password which is your volunteer number (printed on patrol cards this fall). _ Paper hours logs may be used for events and some sites. A monthly volunteer hours log may also be used if you don t have computer access and sent your unit supervisor. Identify yourself as a Park District Park Patrol volunteer _ See below. Carry a first aid pack and phone. _ Available for check-out at base locations or carry your own. See below. Report any incidents. _ Call 911 (request Three Rivers Police except for Scott County parks) and notify your supervisor. _ Turn in accident report forms immediately to on-duty supervisor. _ Any injury to yourself must be treated and reported immediately to the on-duty supervisor. (Refer to Worker-Related Injuries Flow Chart available online.) Communicate with your Supervisor _ Get to know your unit supervisor and park staff! Each time you patrol, check with staff and report what you see on park trails and ask any questions or offer suggestions that you may have. Patrol Clothing and Equipment Park Patrol Clothing _ Wear a name tag and red patrol bib, jacket, t-shirt, or other red shirt with patrol patches. [Park District navy/khaki clothing is also acceptable for horse patrol.] Patrol bibs and name tags may be checked out at designated base locations. A complimentary volunteer T-shirt is provided to new patrollers. Engraved nametags provided after 50 hours. _ National Ski Patrol members may wear the official NSP jacket. _ All clothing must be neat in appearance. Black or white pants, tights, or wind pants are recommended with red bib, shirt or jacket. _ Purchase of clothing is not required; however, limited items will be available for purchase, as well as patches, which may be sewn on red clothing. (manual p. 6) Patrol Packs _ First aid packs may be checked out at designated patrol base locations during facility hours. 2

_ You are encouraged to assemble your own pack providing you follow the list of required supplies in the patrol manual (manual p. 16). As you use supplies while assisting park guests, you may request replacement. Check with your supervisor. _ First aid supplies are available for purchase separately as supplies last. o First aid supplies at cost (as available). Cell Phones _ Please carry a cell phone. If you are willing to receive calls from facility staff or Park Police, please give park staff your cell phone number. _ A Cell Phone is available for check-out at base locations during facility hours. Recreation Equipment _ Patrollers are expected to provide own equipment maintained in safe operating order. Patrollers may use park rental equipment while patrolling if equipment is available. Rental is free of charge while patrolling; however, patrollers should follow regular rental procedures (bring your driver s license. Ask the Park Operations Supervisor at each park for procedures. Park rental equipment must stay in the park where it is rented. Horses are not available for rent. Horse Patrollers must provide own horse, tack and transportation to park. Miscellaneous Patrol Info Patrol hours and locations _ Refer to the attached winter patrol schedule and needs table. Schedules are determined according to the needs of each park. Contact unit supervisors with any questions about patrol hours for the parks/trails under their supervision. Trail Passes _ Trail fees are waived for volunteer patrollers while on-duty, in uniform and scheduled in advance. Passes are required when not on duty. _ Active volunteers earn park privileges through the Volunteer Fun Pass Program which is mailed to volunteers each November. For details review the Volunteer Fun Pass Program Fact Sheet online. Help with School Groups, High School Ski Races and Practices, and Other Events Check with each park for specific needs. To sign up for a shift during events and ski meets/practices, just sign up on the patrol schedule for that park or contact program staff recruiting patrollers in the quarterly event volunteer recruitment letter. Patrol Phone/Email List In compliance with our data privacy practices, only the information you authorized on your current patrol form has been included on the patrol roster to be shared with fellow patrollers and staff. If you would like to make corrections to this list, please contact the Volunteer Office. Patrol Meetings and Site Orientations _ All-Patrol Meetings: Before patrolling in winter or spring, a patrol meeting is required. If you miss the Nov. 29 meeting, a make-up is scheduled for Dec. 2, 9-10:30 am & Jan. 3, 6:30-8 pm, French (FOC). _ Horse Patrol: New patrollers who intend to patrol on horseback should contact Sgt. Corey Jurgenson before patrolling. (See supervisor contact list.) Basic winter and summer horse patrol information will be covered at the bi-annual all patrol meeting. Additional meetings/trainings for horse patrollers may also be arranged. _ Site Orientation: New patrollers or patrollers from another park should contact the unit supervisor for the park to arrange a site orientation to become familiar with check-in procedures and information for that park. These visits will need to occur during a slow time of day. 3
