OMFC Fliteline 2 The November meeting is the Club s Annual General Meeting. As well Family Fun Fly - Aug 26 as electing next year s executive, presentations are made to this summer s Wings Programme graduates, and also to new Instructors. Also, if you ve received your membership forms from Jim, you can fill them out and bring them to the meeting as well as your dues for 2018. Minutes of October Meeting The OMFC October meeting was brought to order by President Terry Sears at 7:30 pm on October 2nd, with 19 members present. This was the first meeting after our flying season (which will hopefully go on for a while longer!), so we had reports of all the major events from the past year. Terry started off with a big Thank You! to Dave Slote, who took over all the cooking chores for our club events. We had some fantastic BBQ s this summer. Terry also thanked Harvey Slaght and Andy Sulkowski for supplying the club members with photos of their planes (and themselves) at events. Last but not least, Terry again thanked Bill Funnell for his untiring efforts in keeping the fields and ground it tip-top shape. Bill read out a list of his ground crew, explaining that they were the ones who did the work and made his job easier. (The last couple of Flitelines have had articles highlighting the fantastic job the ground crew does during the summer). We were also reminded that there should be no smoking at Drumquin Park, and especially that no-one should be throwing butts on the ground in the pits. Getting on to the year s events, Jim Eichenberg gave us a brief summary of the Frozen Finger Fly, and also the OMFC Pattern Contest (covered elsewhere in this newsletter). Bill Funnell spoke on the Milton Street Market, where we again had a booth and gave out flyers for the Air Show. Denis Loo summarized the Electric Fun Fly, and Terry talked on the Air Show and Family Fun Fly. Terry also mentioned that he always talks to the management at Terra prior to the Air Show to alert them to possible air traffic, and they have always been extremely understanding. It really helps to keep the public on our side! The topic of guest speakers for our meetings was raised; Denis said they are really difficult to get and if anyone knew of someone willing to talk on our hobby to let the executive know. Jim reminded us of the upcoming MAAC Annual Zone Meeting (October 22nd) and encouraged everyone to sign their proxy form, which he had available. We then had a coffee break and time to get draw tickets, after which we had the draw. The Ace wasn t drawn (again!), so next month s draw prize could be over $100. Terry reminded everyone that next month is our Annual General Meeting, and then adjourned the October meeting
OMFC Fliteline 3 OMFC Pattern Contest - July 29/30 The 2017 Pattern Contest had two great days of flying. We were able to get four rounds on Saturday and two on Sunday and if it weren t for a persistent cross-wind, the days would have been perfect. There were thirteen contestants from across Ontario and New York state flying in five categories. The winners were: Sportsman Brian Pike Barrie Intermediate Garry Howard Trenton Advanced Eric Wenger Acton Masters Steve Miller New York FAI Ethan Chariandy OMFC Thanks to Brian Anderson for his field set-up and assisting the C.D.; to Kim Vasiliadis for helping with the registration, and to Dave Slote for manning the BBQ and keeping everyone fed. OMFC Fliteline 4 Cat s Cradle Those of you that have been with the Club for a longer time will be familiar with both Don Field and his WW2 story. Don was a Lancaster bomber pilot, and here is his wartime story: The Crew
OMFC Fliteline 5 A number of years ago, Dave Slote had built a model of the Lancaster, which Don actually flew once. That model was subsequently involved in a crash, and largely destroyed. In recent years, Dave has done a rebuild on the plane, and it is again patterned after JB652 A. He has flown the model a number of times this year, but has been plagued by engine unreliability (and a loose aileron). That s not what you want in a four engine plane! Dave plans to have the model successfully (and reliably) airborne again next season. (Photos by Frank Pilih)
