Chicago has won 11 of its last 14 home games dating to April 19 the staff has posted a 2.43 ERA (34 ER/126.0 IP) with a.190 average against (85-for-447) in this 14-game stretch, including a 2.16 ERA (20 ER/83.1 IP) from the starters and a 2.95 ERA (14 ER/42.2 IP) from the bullpen. Cubs batters have hit.264 (119-for-450) with 17 homers and 76 runs scored in their last 14 games at the Friendly Confines. CUBS AND BRAVES HONOR JACKIE ROBINSON: The Cubs and Braves today make up April 15 s rainout at Wrigley Field this April 15 marked the 71st anniversary of Jackie Robinson s major league debut with the Dodgers since Chicago and Atlanta didn t play that day, the teams today will wear No. 42 jerseys to celebrate the anniversary of Robinson breaking the game s color barrier in 1947. Robinson played 93 games at Wrigley Field he batted.295 (99-for-336) with 22 doubles, seven triples, five homers, 43 RBI and a.400 on-base percentage at the Friendly Confines. THIS WEEK S MATCHUP: The Braves and Cubs sit first and second among N.L. clubs in run differential (Atlanta, +56 and Chicago, +54) while the Braves lead the Senior Circuit with 213 runs scored and the Cubs sit third with 200 (Pittsburgh is second with 201). THOUGHT HOME AND HOMES WERE FOR HOCKEY: The Cubs and Braves today makeup an April 15 rainout at Wrigley Field before tomorrow starting a three-game set in Atlanta this is the first time the Cubs play a N.L. opponent two-straight days with one game apiece at each other s parks since April 16-17, 1990 in that instance, the Cubs hosted the Mets on April 16 before starting a three-game set at Shea Stadium the following day thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. PRIDE OF COLOMBIA: Today s starting pitchers, Chicago s José Quintana and Atlanta s Julio Teheran, lead Colombian-born pitchers with 61 career victories apiece Ernesto Frieri is third with 11 major league wins. CURRENT EVENTS: Today wraps up a stretch in which the Cubs will have played 14 of 17 games at Wrigley Field since April 26 Chicago has gone 10-6 thus far the Cubs tomorrow begin a seven-game six-day road trip in Atlanta (3 games) and Cincinnati (4 games starting Friday, including a split doubleheader on Saturday to make-up April 3 s rain out). Thanks to this make-up game against Atlanta and Saturday s make-up game in Cincinnati, today is the fourth of 11 games in 10 days for the Cubs the team s next off day is May 21 and that s the first of three respites in just over two weeks for Chicago (off days also May 24 and June 4). FIVE UP, FIVE DOWN, FIVE UP: In 15 games from April 26 through this last Saturday, the Cubs recorded a five-game winning streak (scoring 12 runs), a five-game losing streak (scoring 14 runs) and now another five-game winning streak (scoring 50 runs). Ed Hartig notes this is just the second time in franchise history the Cubs have posted at least three consecutive winning or losing streaks of at least five games the other time was in 1920 with four consecutive streaks of at least five wins/losses: May 22-31 (gm. 1), nine-game winning streak; May 31 (gm. 2)-June 11, 10-game losing streak; June 12-22, six-game winning streak; June 23-27, fivegame losing streak. RUN PRODUCTION: The Cubs have scored 53 runs in the first six games of this homestand, including at least 11 runs in three of the first four games (42 runs total) prior to this homestand, the team had scored 27 runs in 11 games from April 25-May 6 (2.5 runs per game). The Cubs previously reached double-digits in runs in three of four games, April 15-18, 2004, vs. Pittsburgh (1 game) and Cincinnati (3 games). Chicago has now recorded eight games with at least 10 runs scored this season, the most such contests in the majors (Atlanta is second with six). QUALITY STUFF: After beginning the season with just seven quality starts and a 5.27 ERA (57 ER/97.1 IP) in the club s first 19 games, Cubs starting pitchers have gone 7-5 with nine quality starts and a 2.58 ERA (28 ER/97.2 IP) in the last 17 games Cubs starters have held the opponent to a.208 average (73-for-351) in the last 17 contests, as well as a.664 OPS. WILLY AT-BAT: Willson Contreras, who yesterday turned 26, collected 26 total bases in a three-game stretch, Wednesday-Saturday, going 10-for-15 with three doubles, two triples, three homers, 11 RBI and five runs scored. Contreras on Friday set a career mark with seven RBI, going 4-for-5 with two homers (including a first-inning grand slam), two doubles and two runs scored in an 11-2 win over the White Sox he s just the fifth Cubs catcher since the RBI became an official stat in 1920 with at least seven RBI in a game, joining Ed Bailey (8 RBI, 7/22/65 vs. PHI), George Mitterwald (8 RBI, 4/17/74 vs. PIT), Barry Foote (8 RBI, 4/22/80 vs. STL) and Geovany Soto (7 RBI, 8/26/08 at PIT). BÁEZ AT THE DISH: Javier Báez leads the N.L. and is tied for second in the majors with 36 RBI he ranks second in the N.L. in slugging percentage (.613), third in extra-base hits (23), tied for third in total bases (87) and tied for fifth in home runs (10). FIRST THING FIRST: The Cubs scored five runs in Friday s first inning, plated four runs in the opening frame on Saturday and yesterday scored two runs in the first inning the team s 34 runs in the first inning are its most in any frame this season, just eclipsing it s 31 runs in the seventh inning. HOMER, HOMER ON THE RANGE: Including his solo shot Friday, Kris Bryant has homered in two of his last four games, in four of his last seven and in five of his last 10 overall on Wednesday, he hit his 100th career homer which is already a franchise mark for any player in his first four seasons as a Cub, surpassing Ernie Banks 93 home runs from 1953-56. Bryant is the 22nd player in franchise history to reach 100 career homers just two other Cubs third basemen have reached triple digits in home runs: Ron Santo (337 homers) and Aramis Ramirez (239). A FINE QUINTET: Five regular Cubs relievers have an ERA at 2.16 or better: Brian Duensing (0.73), Brandon Morrow (1.29), Pedro Strop (1.69), Steve Cishek (1.96) and Carl Edwards Jr. (2.04) the Cubs are the only big league team to boast that distinction, as no other club has more than four such relievers. Dating to last season, Brandon Morrow s 64.2-straight innings without allowing a homer is the longest active streak in the majors, while Steve Cishek ranks third with a streak of 45.1-straight homerless innings.
